  • North of Waterdeep, the land is cold, vast, and forbidding. The
    Trackless Sea stretches northward for what seems like forever,
    interrupted only by the occasional island and, eventually, the
    ice. On land, towns and villages flourish right up to the Spine Of
    The World Mountains. It takes a special kind of person to live up
    here; a determined person used to hardship, a survivor. A person
    with a great love for life and a great respect for the forces-
    both natural and unnatural-that can end it.

    2:24 -- OMG... Central Casting. My GM used to use that on occasion for character background generation back in the day. All I remember is my friend rolling up a character that basically died of old age before he even got to play the character. It was something like, "Military service. Roll again." And he kept rolling it. lol.

    This edition of FR was the best, because the material offered so many opportunities for exploration and adventure. Sadly, by 5e it's all so crowded and the players overshadowed by novel NPCs.

      It really is though. Dungeon Masters don't put in the work they once needed for a successful campaign. I like 5th edition but do NOT want to DM it. Out of 5 or 6 different 5th edition campaigns I've been in the longest lasting one was just under one year.
      My last Greyhawk 2nd edition campaign in the Loftwick region of Greyhawk lasted just about 5 years, and my group has played together since 1995.
      Right now we are into finishing a year of Dark Sun. Players are 6th and 7th level with about 5 or 6 PC deaths. That's about the norm for my game. Dark Sun players will UNDERSTAND this last bit. (It's deadly out there in Athas!)
      Death in 5th edition is scarce. It took that 3 or 4 vampire lair above the coffinmaker in Ravenloft to kill a warrior I had. The DM had one of them throw me out the window after I had 0 hit points. (Instead of drinking from my corpse?). Some players knew hit point totals of the creatures we fought and it cheapened the experiance.

    FWIW, Griffin Mountain is a whole campaign setting supplement covering a new region of Glorantha located some distance from Dragon Pass, not just an adventure. Quite a bit like Prax/Big Rubble/Pavis in that regard. Whole lot of meat in that chunky tome.

    When I was young, I had a demo cd of 21 or whatever number of AD&D games. Some just demos; others full games for the time. This was the 90's or early 2000's. I kinda miss those days when I would see a name like Eye Of The Beholder or Pool of Radiance or Forgotten Realms or Baldur's Gate and be amazed by these mysterious places I got an opportuniity to play a video game from. Now these days I have learned more of these places. Sometimes people talk about them as if they have been oversaturated and sometimes people still talk about them with reverence. But I have learned to sit back and enjoy people like Captcorajus. And while I miss those ignorant days when these mysterious places, I got to play video games within. I wouldn't trade it for the fine TH-camrs I know of today.

    I do wish all the cool lore was presented in a more gameable context. Dungeons are mentioned, none are mapped/keyed. Monster populations are described, no ready to use encounter tables are given. Magic items are described in vague terms, as opposed to the more utilitarian DMG format.
    I get that AD&D in general had been reacting away from its Arneso-Gygaxian wargaming roots for a while already around this point in time (*mature* gamers don't roll up encounters randomly!), so maybe this vagueness was a deliberate statement and not simply a series of unfortunate omissions?

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a supplement/ region book. Lore, the people, notable NPCs are its goal. This is the place where you'll find the 'Dungeon of Death'.. but this supplement only tells you its there, its imagination fuel only. You can TOTALLY run this with very little prep if you're familiar with the material, but certainly this is not meant to provide the DM with a ready made adveture(s)

    • @willmistretta
      @willmistretta ปีที่แล้ว

      @@captcorajus Oh, the lore is great. I wouldn't cut that by any means. I just mean that a more robust "scaffolding" of gaminess supporting it would have made it an even better product for me.
