In the past Veritas made both iron and bronze bodied edge trimming planes. The bronze edge trimming planes were discontinued, making the iron in iron edge trimming plane redundant, but the established name has persevered. I have a bronze edge trimming plane my father bought 15 or 20 years ago, and though highly specialized, it is a pleasant to use when the opportunity arises.
I have the iron edge trimming plane and use it for jointing and fennagling thin frame and panel doors. It's great to confirm square on thin stock that was jointed with a jointer or jack.
The side rabbet plane is so valuable in groove fitting that I consider it a core tool even though I appreciate your “One Trick Pony” moniker. I hold my Lie Nielsen Left & Right pair of them in such reverence that I made a lidded and divided box just to hold and showcase them (to myself)…..😂

Thanks for the comment about planing Plywood. Sure, that stuff will dull a blade quickly. Sharpening is the first skill in woodworking everyone must learn.
Gorgeous wall cabinet. Just like I have always dreamed mine would look like. I started long ago collecting planes with Lie Nielsen planes, but have since bought a good collection of Veritas. You usually can't go wrong with either. With my collection of planes comes hours of enjoyment and some frustration. I think I have bought every sharpening jig known to mankind. Leaning more towards the Rob Cosman method now. Now back to look at that cabinet.
I have a Record 2506 Side Rabbit Plane. I have used it once, it paid for it self that time, got me the smidge I needed to fit box bottem. The Veritas one looks more user friendly.
I've got both of those infrequently used hand planes. The side rabet planes I've used twice if four years. Handy when I needed them but certainly not essential; not sure I'd buy it again. The edge plane does come in handy and I'm glade I have them.
If the workpiece is small and my shooting board is already set up I'd agree with that. For longer work pieces, I prefer the edge trimming plane, as I already have it ready to go at all times and I don't have (and don't want to make) a long grain shooting board.
When I was building a gothic window I was looking for a compass plane. Which I found in abundance for some reason. I can only assume people thought the tool looked neat. Im going to call the compass plane a one trick poney because Im pretty certain lots of people own them but dont get picked up and used all that often.
Don't have the roundover toys yet.... But I do have the edge and side rabbet planes (Vintage Stanleys) and man, have those two saved my butt on more than one occasion. They may be one trick ponies but they are essential IMHO. My fave one trick pony is my Stanley Chamfer plane. Not exactly needed but nice to have.
These come as a kit with a sanding block designed to accommodate all 4 different radii. Another thing I noticed in using these is that because of the way these ride over the surface they burnish as well as cut, which improves the surface of the round over compared to something that only cuts, like a round over router bit, for instance.

The edge trimming plane originally came in bronze so I assume when the iron one came out they started calling it the iron one

A normal plane on a shooting board will do the same thing, and it's less finicky to set up.

My compass plane is vital to what I do, but I know I'm in the minority in that regard.
