My adorable female red-eared slider must be very happy. She splashes so much when she sees me, eats her food in the blink of an eye, basks often, and doesn’t kick when I pick her up. I’ve only had her for two months and we’re very close.
I should let our turtle out of the tank more. I just worry about salmonella because I have little kids. But she is a happy turtle and I just got her a 125 gallon tank! ❤
dry you turtle on a towel, under a light for like 15 minutes and let it roam free, once dry unless the kids touch it and unless it pees or poops on the floor,you should be fine bacteria wise. i kiss mine when he’s dry, all the time and im totally doing well.
One more to add on, I handle them with my bare hands all day, it's only in there pee mainly and tht of u get tht into ur mouth, I let my God children handle them all day long and then wash there Hands with dawn dish soap, hope tht helps. They r save to handle just wash ur hns afterwards , do not dry them out to much if ur talking water based turtles, not tortoises..

The story is my old boss caught him in his porch one day and brought him to work to release it but he let me take it home and I have a tank for her and everything she’s very happy only issue is she doesn’t like basking. She will stay in the water and she sleeps in the water heater sticking in the water. It’s set to 85 degrees maybe it’s too cold for her liking

Im looking in to getting aquatic turtles but ofc the petco near me only has yellow bellied turtles so im searching around for red eared sliders because that was my intended turtle, either way im getting an aquatic turtle and dropping a pretty penny to build an aesthetically pleasing tank as well as top tear for them
I have one who would rather not be confined to the tank and walk around then I have another who never want out the water and hide when it’s time to take everything out to clean the tank! !
-Feed them a balance diet with variety of protein pellets and romaine lettuce, shrimp, carrots -get a good tank size for them to swim in -show them attention -have plants and things for them to interact with in tank

How to make a new red eared turtle adapt to new home ? I literally just got him for my son about 4 days ago and he’s not basking and is in a 20gal tank which was recommended by Petco.
My turtles like to move around so I have multiple stations set up for them to comfortably play and move around in different places around the house! Maybe the tank need some redecorating or a larger tank. I wouldn’t recommend listening to anyone working in the petco repgile department! To me they don’t do enough research and I’m a former groomer from most of the pet stores over the course of years.

The water is too warm. It should be around 77 degrees Fahrenheit, while the basking area should be around 90 degrees. If the water is too warm, they wouldn’t feel the need to bask and would just stay in the water, which wouldn’t be too good for their shell over an extended period of time.
Yes a heating lamp acts like the Sun, which helps regulate the turtles body temperature due to them being cold blooded. Them getting the heat they need from the lamp also helps with metabolizing their food. Maybe get a thermometer to keep an eye on the water bc you don’t want it too cold or too warm. You want to encourage basking.

I haven’t seen any lamps with a built-in thermometer. I’ve just seen other videos of people having a separate thermometer that monitors the basking area and another for the water. I just have one for the water. My water heaters are preset to keep the water at 77.4 degrees.
Make it a routine of handling him until he relax! Until then move slow and talk to him! The sound of your voice consistently will over time ease them to be more comfortable with you!
Man, I have a female with just 1 year old and she is almost 6 inches long by her shell. She eats like crazy, she is healthy but no fat. I’m intimidated on how big she could reach. For what I have seen this size is not normal for her age

My 1 year old turtle is very happy! He does all these things i usually take him outside and see sunlight and hes doing good on our 50Liter Tank!
