      I mean...it's like...literally true? The "fire safety meeting" is literally the best corner of every party. Even people who "don't do drugs" know that drinking together is a good way to make friends, even if they pretend booze isn't a drug. XD

    I’m not familiar with the core rules but I would replace addiction on a first failed save with curiosity. If they get curious, every so often that character thinks about trying it again, and if they fail a roll they will start mildly craving it and will be harder to refuse if they were offered it or were put in a situation where they can easily buy some. Maybe if they do that drug more than 3 times *after* they become curious they then have to go by the regular addiction rules. That means instead of immediately becoming completely addicted, they might have done the drug 4 or 5 times at minimum. A curiosity system would be mild enough that it would be mainly a role play mechanic rather than a strictly defined gameplay rule. You could also say curiosity is just a mild psychological addiction in some ways, though it wouldn’t be explicitly defined as that.

    Back when I ran CP2020 and now with Red, I make it clear to the players that rolling for addiction is only needed if the character has a history of habitual use. A Fixer doing a bump of synthcoke to Grease with a gang, or a Lawman sampling some confiscated Blue Glass to try to better understand the mind of an addict, is all just part of the narrative. If it flavor or depth to a scene, I generally let it slide. If the player is going back purposefully to get the buffs, I'd consider that habitual and ask for a roll to resist addiction.

  • @Matthewx777
    @Matthewx777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Drugs like synthcoke being addictive the first time you try makes sense in a corp prospective. There is another channel of a polyaddict i used to watch and he details every real life drug he's ever taken (alot), and it can give you guys an idea of how drugs truly impact you (in all the different ways) and may allow you to better narrate the effects of these made up drugs.
    How ever Mr. Wise, I do think there'd be drugs on the streets that are not so addictive (or not even a little, but maybe pyschologically) for them party people

    Good video, I recently found myself in the same situation where drugs in RaW are just too punishing to use.
    For my first game of CPRed I went with a "classic" Rockerboy route - old, 47 y/o dude who is/was all about "sex, drugs and rock n roll". He drinks and smokes a lot, we even decided with DM to add extra 100eb to monthly expences due to his heavy smoking habbits.
    Now I would also love to include elements of him doing drugs at patries or sometimes at home but I cannot realistically force myself to even do it, reasons being:
    - DV on most of them is quite high, and even tho I have quite high mod to resist drugs, there is always technically a 10% chance of failing
    - I would not mind failing the DV as much if the negative effects would persist for a limited amount, even a week, but I could bounce back
    - Many (but not all) drugs when addicted do not give the benefits they would usually do anymore, but rather help you bounce back on your level
    - Finally when you decide you had enough of the addiction the therapy to cure addiction will not only have you spend a week of downtime, but also costs a **fuckin** (sorry for language chooms) 1000 eb! and thats a week you could at least hussle instead so net loss is even more
    - Oh and if you go to therapy and try that drug again *within a year* - it is an autofail
    I can understand why some drugs may have this high DV - the effects that raise your stats are potent, but then you have other things like smash which supposed to be party drug and should have lingering effect and addiction happening only with repeated use, yet as soon as youre addicted you dont gain any benefits anymore, or even worse - blue grass that is more of a RP drug than a mechanical benefit, has negative outcomes both ways, addiction will just become such a hassle.
    So while my character is technically addicted to cigarettes and alcohol, we just rp it out as he is just does that regularly, without any benefits or drawbacks (or again, all in RP), but I cannot do so for drugs even if it would be fitting for my character, one example I had last session:
    ...We go out with party and some NPCs to bar to celebrate recent job, we get drings, play pool, I decide to use my Role ability to go around and try to get some drugs for us so we can party a lil more, but then I stop myself as a player, while it would be fun to do and would lead to different intecations and show how some people react to doing drugs, I cannot willingly do this because I am risking getting my party members or NPCs addicted, which will cost them 1000 eb and a week to get off...so moment somewhat runed...I still got some drugs in the end with hilarious outcome, but I never shared or would it with others not from RP point, but from a player point

    Great video (as usual), your channel is (almost) as addictive as synthcoke itself ;)

    in my game im doing a Flat -5DV for resist addiction checks.
    this makes the DV either 12 or 10 which is much more manageable since most people's Body is around the 5 mark.
    it makes Drug taking in game a risky endeavour but not so much it isnt worth rolling.
    im also thinking about making small bumps like "party Favours" for the social scene use of drugs as Jon describes in the Vid. just a little time, like an hours high and an hours comedown to get the flavour of the scene into the game without making the players really thinking too much about the consequences.

    • @JonJonTheWise
      @JonJonTheWise  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great! I do the same. DV for addiction gets higher with more use. Taking a little drugs here and there can lead to addiction but probably unlikely. Heavy use though is more believable

    • @last2nkow
      @last2nkow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonJonTheWise I like that.
      I might do a -10dv for the first use and add 1 each repeated use before a downtime.
      I'm also having a local MedTeck have the addiction remover at 100edies per pop.
      It's a significant purchase but it seems like something people would sell and buy.

    On the comment of "why would anyone buy synthcoke if it causes an addiction the first time you take it". I'd like to counter that with, heroin will literally cause a physiological addiction the first time you try it, and many people still use it. So an addiction after your first try might be possible

    I feel like for drugs, the makers will always try to make them as addictive as possible to make sure their product keeps selling. But…there would also be someone out there that would sell an anti addiction chemical so they could also make money. Time to home brew some new chemicals and make some money.

    All addiction always starts as a coping mechanism, it's always a psychological. Because it's easier to distract yourself with a substance or a hobby rather then deal with the issue head on.

    Just got to this channel from the Seth Skorkowsky interview. If I blow up your comments on multiple videos please don't hate, just trying to boost your numbers if I can.
    EDIT: I believe that there are drugs of extreme potency in the future, but I imagine there would also be various degrees/availability on the way up to it.
    Examples, Candycoke (30% of regular), Regular, Doublebump (200%), Tripletwitch (300%), Synthcoke (500%).
    That way it's believable for the teenage kids there to mess around with the lighter stuff and get used to it, or addicted to the harsher stuff as an adult.

    Synthetic pot in da dark future.... not physically addictive but very potent and can have a powerful psychological addiction...when they become addicted at like dv 8 or 10 and it's only a monetary debuff... maybe somehing like 50 eddies a week or 100...but you always got a joint in your pocket to spark a convo or reach a middle ground

  • @AvianSavara

    As a craft brewer, I find SMASH(tm) absolutely hilarious, but also very very very interesting. By definition, it's not booze. It contains no alcohol, or at least Alcohol as we know it. It's another related chemical that gives similar effects, but is likely faster-acting because it's faster to digest than calorie-rich alcohol. And because it is metabolized quicker by the system, it might drop just as quick, whereas a slow digestion would give your body more time to finish processing every residue of the substance and therefore yield a buzz that has a gradual slope in and out. SO those who see the same thing as me will see similarities in real life with a substance like GHB. In our own reality, it's the low-calorie option for people who do it recreationally, and know how to enjoy proper doseage (whereas abusers always overdose their victims and this is a very potent drug to begin with). SMASH is very much like that. A serious gamechanger and market opener. By pure happenstance, likely as a byproduct of CHOOH2 production, there is a chemical contender against alcohol that is highly-potent, can be easily synthesized, diluted in a batch of product, joined with an artificial flavouring package and some force-carbonation, and there is no traditional method of preparation to compare yourself against. It's the anti-craft brew for people who actually honestly openly as-a-cultivated-marketly explicitly prefer to drink for effect... And all you have to do is sell it to them because it's not well-understood enough to be regulated yet. If you're a playing Corporate in 2020 and this business model doesn't entice you, you're likely not thinking greedily enough for 2020.

    "I highly doubt anyone would get addicted to anything on the first try"
    May I introduce you to heroin? Not everyone becomes addicted on the first try, but some certainly do.
    Why not the same for a made-up world?
    Why not? They can do whatever they want, they are the devs.

    • @JonJonTheWise
      @JonJonTheWise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Even in cases of heroin, people don't usually get addicted the first time they try it. Almost all the drugs in cp2020 are easily addictive.
      I never suggested that the devs shouldn't do whatever they want. I'm merely suggesting my opinion on how I think it should be.
