    I can well imagine the VP meeting they had. "The test results are in, it's great, but the seat doesn't adjust. Can't adjust the seat, Cat owns the patent. We can't slide the column, Galion owns that. Ok, so, we'll tilt the thing! Problem solved!" And the one engineer in the back is thinking "we're spending a few thousand for a tilting column to not pay a $15 royalty . . . "

    Another fine video young man. My dad went into a partnership with two friends. It all went wrong within a year when one "friend" turned full green eyed monster and changed the locks on the shop and took over. He went bust another year down the line and my dad got a little satisfaction from that. It was that even that made him say to me "If you go into business do not go into a partnership, ever". And I never have and have strayed away from the slightest suggestion of it. Another thing he said and I promised him I would not do is "Never set up a business on an over-draft facility, because the bank can walk in a dmeand all moneis back immediately and without notice if they choose to do so". He said that to me and my brother but my brother didn't listen and when thigns got hard the bank swept in and took the lot and he went bust. But he learned from that and has bounced back really well. I am not rich and don't have much money but I make a do and survive.

    A friend told me about talking to a mutual acquaintance who had move away recently. Before moving he said "everywhere I live, people are assholes." The proceeded to list several cities and villages across our area where he had lived and moved away because "the people were assholes." He then stated "I'm moving to (the next town down the line), any idea what people are like there?" My friend told him "Well, they'll probably be assholes." I have to believe that was likely an accurate analysis.

    Never met you in person, but the best indication of a standup person is their ability to admit mistakes, which you do and make entire videos of. Most people you gave examples of can never do any wrong nor will they ever voluntarily admit it. As much as it hurts to be called things (and I really take that stuff to heart) just remember that good people's opinions carry much more weight by word of mouth than assholes. If you think they're a shitty person, chances are lots others do too.

I was wondering since you felt this grader was in a flood or submerged, did you check the hydraulics like you said you would in an earlier video in this series? Did I miss a video where you checked the hydraulics? Did you have to do anything to the hydraulics? The best part of this series was watching you work with and teach your son. Thanks for the awesome videos!

    I learn a little on your channel and without disrespect I would like to give something back as far as information. Im a nate certified hvac tech ive done low temp refrigeration, chiller systems , residential and commercial and even geothermal ac. Along with automotive for many people. The one guaranteed rule is it never needs "just a charge " its a sealed system so when it needs more its got a leak no matter what , and depending on the system as is the case with diesel and automotive, the oil and the refrigerant are separate, with the oil being measured into a system you can add refrigerant to it but you don't know how much oil you've lost / making it possible and probable that a early compressor failure is in the future unless you plan for that. We all want a happy customer and nothing sounds better to a customer than we put a can in and its beer can cold so your good to go. The reality is we are taking a gamble with our customers trust when 2 days 2 weeks or 2 months later it runs out again. Best case is next season, at minimum I always recommend and teach that you do a visual inspection of all seals and components and inject some dye into the system to be prepared for round 2 , let the customer know that you've got it working and that becsuse it leaked we want to find the leak . Your current case is obviously different because the clutch went out. I was just listening when you where driving up and It seemed like a great time to save you a few call backs and hopefully help strengthen your already solid relationships with your customers.

    • @jram7047
      @jram7047 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevenakn1 from a quick look at your videos it looks like you do some similar work to him on heavy equipment, from my experience working on diesels youve got to wear a lot of hats and be at least decent in multiple areas , electrical repairs, hvac systems, custom tool design, hydraulics, engine repair and such. Without disrespect I would dare to say I have specialized in hvac far more in depth and in less forgiving circumstances than diesel and automotive repair where someone can park it for a day or two or just parts change it.. in my line of work , a call back looses customers faster than cat running from a water hose. The day that someone decides that other people can't teach them things is the day that they stop growing as a person. Even a broken watch is right twice a day... I would challange you to try some uv yourself on a system that youve worked on and that someone is keeping for a bit, you would be suprised to learn how often its a Schrader valve or o ring that can easily be fixed in a few minutes. Often in the automotive side people have tried to use machines to reclaim , evacuate and weigh in the charge because the normal tech isn't capable to identify what is wrong when they don't work correctly. The amount of techs that used the " comprrssor valves are leaking" or " its just clogged up" diagnosis that I fixed by cleaning coils or an orifice tube would fire customers up if they knew how often they where getting ripped off by someone who really didn't understand what they where working on and just parts changed to get it working. I didnt add my post to elevate myself or brag about my experience, more honestly it was my intention to share information.

    I know 2 old sayings about partnerships- partnership is the first ship to sink - and in some cases - when one man has the money and one man has the experience and they form a partnership the usual outcome is the man with money gets the experience and the man with the experience gets the money... and like you said your experience didn't cost much...

    i have been involved in 2 partnerships. in both cases the partners realizes business is work and bailed. in the end i was able to make the business' successful and sell them after a few years of building them. these were great lessons in contracts and friendships. needless to say, i have no interest in partnerships ever again. in your case, i would send him a bill for all the parts and labor. its not right for him to reap the benefits of your knowledge and labor. do you have any text messages or emails outlining the scope of the partnership? if so, an attorney can use that. sometimes a few hundred bucks to have an attorney send him a "demand letter" stating that you are requiring payment for work performed and parts is money well spent.

    I'm slow at billing since the vast majority of my customers are good for the money. But..... I'm probably about to get burned for 13k. This will be about the 2nd time in 21 years. I did it to myself and like you, I'm not gonna dwell on it. Sometimes you can be so busy making money you're losing money. I'm a CNC tech, service guy, field engineer whatever, but I'm not a businessman. I could be showing up to work in a Porsche, instead I'm showing up in my wife's car since my car is down.

      I guess just send them a bill and write it off as a loss. At least it might help you at tax time.
