    Absolutely loving the daily uploads Makho. Keep killing it brother

      I let the backlog accumulate too high and then forgot about some stuff so this was my way of fixing that. I think this is the last "out of band" video unless I find something else I missed again. (I didn't miss this video, I just thought it would be nice to end with a bang)

    I installed this dock, HDMI kit and funnyplaying IPS V2.
    It is working fine.
    The sponge is to put under the PCB that connects to the dock.
    The double-sided tape was used to secure the Type-C connector to the shell.

    Thanks for the video Makho! I'm looking to build a new GBA and have been looking into doing this mod.
    It looks like they have an updated version that fixes a lot of the issues with the one in your video.
    No need to remove batteries with the battery protection circuit and HDMI output from the dock are the big ones!
    You should check it out!

    Well, this looks nice for people who want a switch-styled consolizer (Aka, a handheld gba that can be “docked”, so to say, for tv output and constant power, alongside offering other controls). Obviously though, it’s much worse than a regular consolized gba and seems like a lot of work just for a gba that doesn’t have a great hdmi output.

    • @makho
      @makho  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That was my precise thinking too. Lots of work for not that great of an experience.

      @@makho Yeah, I definitely don’t think this is that great of a kit, unless people really like that whole switch-like mechanic of being both a handheld and a console, which more power for them if they do, but even though I already have the IPS version of the HDMI kit, I just don’t see any reason to bother with this kit myself. Like, even the “docking” mechanic is clumsy, you need to literally take out the batteries every time you want to dock it, it’s not just a plug and play deal.

    Both the NES and the SNES classic controller has the Wii port.

    Maybe it was designed with the separate HDMI kit in mind and not the DSi integrated one? Watching your video and other videos about the dock, I noticed in yours that the (what I think is a) potentiometer dial kept getting in the way of the USB-C PCB install.
    Is there a thickness difference between the DSi screen kits and the IPS kits?
    I also wonder if there's a way to merge the battery and dock USB-C ports (similar to a Nintendo Switch) and maybe have a tiny switch (separate from the USB-C connection) that gets activated only when inserted into the dock, which switches power delivery between going to the battery and going directly to the console. Would make things a LOT more convenient.
    But this mod is pretty nice on its own. Always nice to see more mods for the GBA.

    • @makho
      @makho  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they are very clearly not designed to be used together despite complementing each other so well (and being shown together in product demos).

  • @ZyferWarriorPrime

    Maybe the double sided tape was intended to stick the dock to something? Seemed just about the right size to go in the middle on the bottom.

    It's fine. PCBs loooove prolonged tension caused from bends.

    • @makho
      @makho  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, not only did the manufacturer tell me it was compatible, they also told me it was the solution to the power problems I complained to them about. So I made it compatible. I don't recommend doing this the way I did but I see no other option with this hot garbage kit.

  • @Quadsworth
    @Quadsworth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So this is now essentially a dual use consolizer as long as you swap the battery back in. Not super simple but a lot more simple than undoing a hardcore consolizer and rebuilding it

  • @ZyferWarriorPrime

    Same port for the Wii Classic controller they used on the SNES Classic too. Probably the true intent.

    Would removing the GBA Fuse from the board, and installing an "Ideal Diode" between the Battery and the Fuse solve the backfeed issue?
    Basically, battery to "Ideal Diode" input A, USB Power Lead to input B, GBA Fuse on the output and then that connects back into the GBA board.
    My understanding is an ideal diode like a Max40200 could prevent backflow, though, I'm not an electrical engineer, so I may just be misunderstanding how that works.

    • @makho
      @makho  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you would need to connect this board after the diode and the batteries need to run through the diode first. The problem, however, is that now you have a diode dropping battery voltage and destroying what little battery life you had left.
      A better method might be to move the fuse to the dock board, run the battery input (from the left fuse pad) to the dock board, and run all the output to the GBA input (from the right fuse pad) and then just use a mosfet to switch the power. Batteries connected by default until external power switches the reg on and disconnects the batteries from the circuit.

    • @shipool
      @shipool 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makho I believe I was using the term ideal diode incorrectly, as what I had in mind was a mosfet, I've just heard that setup referred to as such.. perhaps incorrectly. I'm not super familiar with the correct terms, so apologies for that.
      The method you described sounds like it'd be fairly easy to implement (save for fuddling with tiny fuses), surprises me that they didn't just implement such a solution on their board... but based on the history of "80% of the way there" that this company has, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised.

    • @makho
      @makho  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shipool No, I don't think you were using that term incorrectly, I think I just misunderstood.
      But yeah, this kind of stuff is pretty typical with hardware from "one chip".

    I found a good solution to fix the battery problem. Remove the usb-c port which on the rechargeable battery. Then connect the dock's 5V to the 5V pad of the rechargeable battery.

    It looks like the latest listing for this kit on AliExpress says it's not compatible with the 720 HDMI kits. They only list it as compatible with the old 480 HDMI kits.

    • @makho
      @makho  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      when I complained about the battery problem the first time, I was directed towards this *from the kit maker*. They need to not make two mods that basically rely on each other and then make them incompatible.

    • @Kyrox2
      @Kyrox2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makho I saw an earlier listing that had them all compatible, so someone must have informed them they didn't work together (or maybe they just watch your videos).
      I'd love a dock that could charge a battery, play HDMI, and connect a controller, but this clearly isn't it. I wish they would take the time to make a revision after they released a product. The no battery thing is still a big issue, but it would feel much more complete with better fitment and a dock molded to the GBA shape.

    With a Wii expansion port on it, you would think it just works with the Super Nintendo Classic controller.

    Hey Mahko, I just did a build last night and used funny playing buttons with OEM membranes, and the A and B feel good, but the DPAD is super tight. Should you not use Funnyplaying buttons with OEM membranes?

    • @eoinogaora2459
      @eoinogaora2459 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not Makho but I did have a similar issue here - mixing OEM and FP/3rd party buttons and membranes isn't expressly forbidden or anything, and usually you won't have any issues. What Gameboy is it? With my GBA the B button needed a tiny bit of filing to avoid the button rubbing against the edges of the hole it fit through - are any parts of the button you're using sticking out or otherwise noticeably larger than the OEM buttons? Often the quality control isn't perfect on Chinese stuff, and things like mould lines etc can have bits of plastic that can snag.

      @@eoinogaora2459 Thanks for the reply, so Im using oem membranes, funny playing buttons, and an extremerate shell. Maybe its the shell as well? The tolerances on it haven't been super great. Ill compare to the oem buttons and see if thats the problem.

      You can buy the Two Wire HDMI

    • @makho
      @makho  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point is that the other part of this, the HDMI part, kinda needs external power to run smoothly and does greatly benefit from external controller support and this does both.

    would you consider making a alteration to the gba slate to allow for this dock to be compatible with it? or is there not enough space in the slate shell to allow for this mod?

    • @SGTSHOOTnMISS
      @SGTSHOOTnMISS 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not Makho, but given that the slate uses the original back housing for the GBA SP rather than a GBA, I'd assume it would be way too cramped given how much more tightly compacted everything is in the SP.

    • @makho
