New War Threat in Horn of Africa? Port Agreement Divides Ethiopia and Somalia

  • Ethiopia has signed an initial ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, to utilize the Red Sea port of Berbera. In return, Ethiopia would formally recognize Somaliland as an independent nation, making Ethiopia the first country to do so. Elias Amare, an Eritrean American journalist, geopolitical analyst and founding member of the Asmara-based Peacebuilding Center for the Horn of Africa, explains how this agreement undermines Somali sovereignty and threatens to further escalate regional tensions.

Unite all of Africa..., stop fighting against each other, as there is no time for tribalism against your fellow brothers and sisters on the African Continent.... Is Somalia somehow blocking the people/government of Somaliland access to the ports of the African coast? If so for what reason? And so, why not for the Somaliland people/government acquire assistance from neighboring Ethiopia for assistance with accessing the port? If that is the case.., This type none-sense must end now!!! Ethiopia sent its military to Somalia agreed by the Somalian government so it doesn’t fall into chaos which would effect the whole region. Eritrea has a observer status in the Arab League and has good relations with the Arab countries that border the Red Sea, in saying that these Arab countries and Eritrea have a fear that Ethiopian will dominate the Red Sea, trade and military wise so they do their best to not let Ethiopia have trade and military port on the Red Sea.

It’s a very bone headed move by Ethiopia and quite honestly surprised. Ethiopia has probably more organised ethnic liberation movements than any country in Africa, multiple regions are clamouring for independence. They just ended a 2 year civil war against Tigray who wanted to secede. The flames in Oromia is still burning and the Somali region can blow up anytime .Not to mention Abiy completely violated the Tripartite Agreement with Eritrea & Somalia signed in 2018 which states that they must all “respecting each other's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity”. Seems like Abiy’s agreements aren’t worth the paper they are written on.

1st of all these r not liberation fronts, they r vagabonds backed/funded by oromo/amahara ethno-preneur elites from the diaspora whose end-game is to take power away from the democratically elected gov't of Abiy. How can u liberate by killing, raping and pillaging those same ppl u r allegedly liberating? And if those 'liberation fronts' had any support from the Amhara/Oromo ppl they would have taken power by now, but their abismal failure is evident.
Second, Ethiopia didn't infringe upon anybody's territory, Somaliland had been a country for the last 30yrs, democratically electing its leaders unlike Isaias Afeworki in Asmara who clinged to power through tyranny.
Finally, Dr Abiy has taken the country forward, and it's palpable for anyone grounded in truth, despite the western backed TPLF destructive war, the COVID-19 scamdemic, the Russian/Ukraine induced global inflation. So all this calamities u r dishing out r ur wishful thinking.

Even if Somalia did nothing the people there would still not accept it and it would lead to a war. If Somaliland needs to ask Ethiopia for recognition that means it doesn’t have the authority to give port access or allow a base.

Ethiopia is crumbling with civil wars and genocides all over the country specifically in the Amhara, Tigray, Somali and Afar regions. Their government tried to sign illegal "agreements" with traitors within Somalia to steal/"lease" parts of our sea. Now before those illegal agreements that violate Somalia's sovereignty, discussions could have been had. But as of now, that's not gonna happen and Somalis from all over the world are now taking about war and defending their homeland. Ethiopia has already had two wars with Eritrea already and one with Somalia in 2007. Ethiopia lost all wars of course. Ethiopia is the troublemaker in the Horn of Africa.

We Somalis have had so many wars with Ethiopia for a centuries and Ethiopia is aware Somali fighting spirit. However, Ethiopian aggressive towards Somalia go whole the way 1414 and beyond, every time they tried they have been defeated, retaliated and completely annihilated. The whole of Ethiopia was about to fall under Imam Ahmed Gurey1530, but saved by a Portuguese by Pedro da Gama, son of navigator Vasco da Gama.
Ogaden War of 1977-78 between Somalia and Ethiopia, Somalia defeated Ethiopia and came as close as a few kilometers from the capital of Itiopia Addis Ababa but saved as usual and previous conflicts by Soviet Union and Cuba, which were seeking a cross-continent socialist alliance. If they think we have internal conflicts to be exploited and invade our country, we are willing to give them one more round. The only way for Somaliland to break away from Somalia is to pass a referendum bill in the parliament. The Somalis in Somaliland have to vote again. Well, this whole thing about Ethiopian port access is instigated by the West and gulf state (UAE & Saudi’s) to contain Houthi’s in Yemen and Iran. Ethiopia, as usual wants to be a mercenary for the interest of these powers. It has nothing to do with the economy. As a result Africans and other peoples in the region are being aware that Ethiopia is a threat to all as a client state who is causing instability and escalation of war. Now, Ethiopia is bankrupt, its people are dying of hunger and war.
To protect its legitimacy and validity, the African Union should move out of Addis, as Ethiopia does not represent the spirit or the policies of that organization that advocates the betterment of Africans and much less to Ethiopians' interests.
Most particularly, how would one square this behavior of Ethiopian regime, with the recent devastating war against those renegade Woyanne’s who wanted to secede? Abbiy now recognizes a Somali region and turns against his ally in Somali republic. Of course, he betrayed Eritrea as well and is now fanning the flame of war in the region. It exposes the Nobel prize givers in Oslo who are kow towing to politics. Abiy does not represent peace and it is a joke to give him a Nobel 'Peace Prize',
Ethiopia is now a very dangerous state to a peaceful coexistence and a destabilizing force in the Horn of Africa. On this ground and its absolute dependence on outside powers for its economic and political existence, it is prudent to state that it remain landlocked and only allowed access for economic purposes. Besides, it is beset with myriad internal problems.

I was born in Hargeysa in todays Somaliland, grew up with my proud countrymen who have a rich and unique history, language and set of customs and traditions that set them apart from other cultures.
I love most what my country somalia has been at different times in its history, the vanquisher of European colonialism and the tyrant siyaad barre, a beacon of opportunity and hope.
To love one's country is to be proud of it, but also not to be afraid to confront its problems and work to solve them. Crime of betraying one's country, especially by trying to kill its sovereign and giving aid and comfort to the enemy and setting up a parallel government when an enemy brutally takes over your nation and your countrymen into submission.
Everyone knows that Ethiopia is the only African country that has been a colonial power in Africa over another African nation that Europeans have done to Africa, for example Eritrea has been fighting for years for its independence from Ethiopia, our brothers in Ogaden are still under colonial Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has never been somali friendly nation, their dreams are now fulfilled through idiots who are in power over my country today who are soo busy cannibalizing all somalia and somliland assets like there is no tomorrow.
In South Somalia Turkiye and various Arab countries really control somalia as a whole, like healthcare, ports, airports, banks, there is almost nothing owned by Somalis in Somalia right now.
In Puntland, some thieves in same clan are looting the assets of the Somali people there, same looting is happening in Somaliland as well.
Just doing something bad or dishonest and selling out our beautiful coasts and coastal areas gives you idiots nothing or any success, power. History will judge you all harshly.
Indigenous people of North America let/welcome Europeans in their land, now they live in reserves, if a foreigner with power from near or far into our country it can happen to us Somalis , if we let ethiopia our enemies in our country. To help invading ethiopian forces in northern somalia, sounds like high treason to me and should lead to the grave and refers to betrayal of one's own country by attempting to materially aid its enemies.

    A zebra remains a zebra.
Eritrea was a traitor to the Ethiopian Powerhuas,
Today's Eritea (EPLF and TPLF) fought against Ethiopia for years with Western help. 33 years ago, when communism ended, these rebels, TPLF and the current Eritrean government came to Addis to take over the Goverment Ethiopia, .After that They sold Ethiopia to the West. After the collapse of the communist era in Russia and the Eastern Bloc, Ethiopia was broken at the time. The West then handed the country over to the rebels and the TPLF established itself as the government in Ethiopia and let go of Eritrea without consulting the Ethiopian people. Ethiopia became landlocked.
Ethiopia can retake its access to the Red Sea by force, but the West will not allow that. Eritrea, Somalia and Djibouti are there to block the Ethiopian power center that could resist Western power.
Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalis are the fake Countries countries in the Horn of Africa. In order to keep Ethiopia weakon.

Unfortunately, your guest is missing the elephant in the room. Ethiopia put a lot on the table and was shortchanged by Eritrea and Somalia after their tripartite pact in 2018. A lot has changed in Ethiopia internally since then and the Ethiopian PM is in a stronger position since coming to power in 2018. I understand the fear from #eritrea and #somalia since they small states compared to Ethiopia. However, just like it did for Eritrea and Somalia, Ethiopia is now putting its weight behind #Somaliland ... The difference is SL, like #Djibouti, is very much aware of the long-term benefit of having Ethiopia on its side. Btw, time will sort the matter on the ground since the MoU is expected evolve into formal agreements in a month or so. What is worrying is the possibility that Eritrea and Somalia might take actions on the ground beyond supporting proxies and Ethiopia might decide to go beyond recognizing SL. #mladdiz

If right now Ethiopia makes the same deal with Somalia you will see opinions changing. It is about the money. Look at Eritrea, got independence but they have nothing to show for the 30+ years,,,Just national pride but they are among the poorest countries in the world. However, Western definitions of a state European are a European constucts. But Somali nation is one and united . Ethiopia is Westren imperialist Christian creation which was created 1885 Berlin conference. There was not a Nation or state called Ethiopia before 1889,there was just a small Christian kingdom called Abysinnian which descended from Judeo- Southern Arabian descent.
So Europeans helped a minority notthern Christians small kingdom whose name was changed to an ancient biblic name of Africa or land of the people with Burnt face Ithiopios. And the Europen imperialist divided somlia into French Italian British and Kenya- Ethiopia somalilands.
