This young lady seems to channel old spirits, almost to be possessed by them, when she plays. Her authenticity and immersion in the music totally defies her tender years. Quite a privilege to witness.

Nora calls herself an "Outsider". I get what she means, but she sings and plays like she's been doing it since before she was born. I'll call her a natural. Good to honour tradition. Thanks for your outstanding playing and soulful singing from way up here in Canada.
Bluegrass is a representation of the beauty of life and the pain that comes with it. If you can have patience to listen and understand that vulnerability, then you’re welcome.
@@Chase_AM not bluegrass, but the roots of Bluegrass. Semantics, I know, but this music comes from a place way older than Bill Monroe's music . More like his uncle Penn's music 🙂
I was quite literally just thinking that same thing! There's a softness to her renditions that make these songs more beautiful and pleasing to my English ear
Another old soul in a young body is christone kingfish Ingram. First time I heard him on the radio I had no idea who I was listening to but it sounded like every dead blues guitar player decided they weren't done playing and all came back through Christone.
Music is everything to me and I am a guitarist songwriter. I miss playing piedmont blues and playing with old porch pickers in the south. I teared up listening to this. Sounds like home feels.
Her first song reminds me of a grass field with peasants and livestock or the game "days gone" 0:13 "The Very Day I'm Gone" 5:55 "Miner's Dream" 10:53 "Little Satchel"
Listened to this several times now. I feel like this might be a Chris Thile/Sierra Hull moment, and that I'll still be appreciating her playing from my rocking chair as an old man
Freaks me out a bit. I love what she's doing, but how can a 15-year-old have such a deep connection to these old styles of music. Maybe this isn't her first lifetime doing this? Love it!
There's a Buddhist parable where a monk asks the Buddha how many more lifetimes it'll take for him to attain enlightenment, "1000" replies the Buddha, and the monk is resentful because he's spent so many years studying, eating only plain rice, generally suffering. Behind him is a dancer with the same question and the Buddha replies the same answer, "1000.". The dancer rejoices, though, exclaiming "1000 more lives of bringing smiles and joy to those around me!" If you believe in reincarnation, I'd definitely say this girl is more of the latter than the former.
Jeez..only 15! Bought my 1st Sears Silvertone 5 string in my Jr year in HS.. 1963 n learned to play off/with Flatt n Scrugs album for my talent show. After all these years lots o fun..but no where near as proficient as Nora. You are a treasure ..Thank you.
The best version of Little Satchel I've heard, I listened to every other video on TH-cam just to be sure and it's official Nora does something to this song that no one else seems to manage, such gentle effortless playing, a truely natural musician and inspiring, I hope to learn this song one day ❤️ it's good for the soul
This moment where she mentions John Cohen and the emotions shine through a bit. But she continues in a totally calm manner. How cool can you be! Much love for this fantastic performance and for Tiny Desk!
It is sometimes said that youth is wasted on the young. Nora Brown is a testament that this is not always true. She has an immense talent and has worked to earn the history of her musical interest. I am looking forward to celebrating her path into the future.
Shout out to the jalopy school of folk music in redhook, brooklyn for working with people of all ages and providing a wealth of knowledge and a space for special talent to grow like this.
Her singing and spirit reminds me of a life is precious . No matter how short and beautiful it is. Music never does even when good people do or everything goes back to dust.
I started listening to some music as background noise while I was doing other things, and had to completely stop what I was doing to listen to this. Wow. She's an inspiration. Beautiful singing and playing. You go, girl!!!
With artists like this, I feel confident her (our) heritage will be remembered forever - What an AWESOME ambassador - GREAT WORK NORA BROWN AND TINY DESK!!!
It must be such an honor to be playing John Cohen's banjo. And one that Roscoe held and played too. WOW. It sounds amazing in that space and that tune is on fire!
That rendition of "Little Satchel" is just sheer poetic and musical perfection. I find it hard to believe she is only 15. Phenom. Cheers from Louisiana P[>
Very good, young lady. You have this blessing you can take with you anywhere you go and share a bit with those around you. _This_ is what Tiny Desk is all about.
She is an artist that pre covid I would've found just in time to see her play at a small venue in my city before she got big. I miss being part of that small club with artists like these.
Wow just Wow! Just closing my eyes and listening intently, her playing is constant and unflinching and is driving in the spirit and might of an old steam train engine!
The second song really stood out to me. I don't know if that style is common, but I've never seen it before. She's finger picking without picks and only two fingers, but it sounds a bit like clawhammer. And then of course she finishes with flawless clawhammer.
The complexity of that two-finger style is... I'm not sure what it is. It is deceptive. Simple and complex at once. Her playing has a wisdom which belies her chronological youth.
it's called Two finger thumb lead. If offers the subtleties of each note lost in Scruggs style 3 finger. It's a fairly common style among traditional banjo players and works well with clawhammer. You may want to look up Clifton Hicks.
@@andrewscease8185 it can have an unusual syncopation, while it looks easy, it is deceptive. You have to get away from the idea of patterns, like Scruggs Style, and work on the melody. The trick is adding 2, 1/8 notes out of a 1/4 note. You'll see her go from thumb-finger-thumb, then throw in a thumb finger finger thumb or reverse. It's a matter of convenience and style over an actual pattern to match the melody. You can't really think about it, rather it has to come naturally. Like my Uncle said, "You got it or you ain't"
15 years old, a great talent playing banjo and very well spoken. Keep up the great work! I really enjoyed your concert! Thank you so much for sharing such gifts :)
This style of music, especially when performed with so much feeling and excellence as it was done here, holds some quality that brings tears to my eyes.
Wow, Nora - you are incredible - I listened to the first song and was just blown away - then figured out how young you are in the first bit you were speaking. I can't believe it. I'm going to show this to my daughters tomorrow - you have such a wonderful voice!

How beautifully put! Yes!
