I have an 2002 model...Deleted the rear cats, deleted the main center muffler and rear resonator. Replaced the rear resonator with one chamber flow master - 1 in 2 out split. Sounds lovely when jamming or idling - all ranges and drive styles sound very aggressive... The engine has absolutely no exhaust system resistance. I'm running 22 inch wheels 9.5 to rear 11.5 stagger but 285/35/22... This is .9 larger diameter than stock which provides each gear a little more top end leg. No other modifications, full OEM stock...no tuning whatsoever. I'm now around 162,000 miles on odo now. Since 145,000 miles I've driven this above 130 mph almost 2 dozen times, likely more, and frequently run over 120MPH. I currently live in a rural area, low traffic, with a long 14 mile stretch, of US highway nearby, on my main route to wherever. My top 3 speeds were 138,139, and 142 MPH. All top speeds were clocked with odo mileage above 150,000 due to relocating out of Houston Texas and into a rural region in recent years. She runs much better in low to moderate humidity within outdoor temp range of 50-70 fahrenheit. This engine maintains her pull up through the range. Rough riding, very rigid though. But I'm ready to sell her before she loses her steam. Time to move on. Have owned her since 2012. Good times!
So the tires I’m rocking 255/55/18 The wheels 18x8.5 ET35. Honestly I’m not sure if the previous owner lowered it on the adjustable stock ride height adjuster
What's your full setup on this? I just bought a ML55 AMG W163 and I want to copy the same setup, if you could drop the info of your exhaust, intake, tune, etc, that would be great!!!
Tune RaceIQ Performance with the pops and bangs The exhaust, secondary cat delete and the huge resonator in the middle replaced with straight pipes. Sounds amazing. Wheels I kept them on stock size
@@HeyboysGarageThat’s crazy. I know most people in the US, usually had these W163 SUV’s around me. People often had the W163 ML 320 or 350; but sparingly an ML 430, since the ML 500 succeeded it. And as for the ML 55 AMG, the ML 500 also went on to be produced for longer than that AMG model… Either way, I couldn’t even imagine the niché car community back then, let alone nowadays. Where would you even get a cam or long tube headers for these SUV’s/engines? Do you have them custom fabricated from scratch or…?
Bro I just picked up an clk500 and I'm going to follow your step by step process of mods. Hey wait because stock for me is kind of crazy too but the way your car is moving ohyeah
I had ML w163 350 special edition and I know w163 inside out, don't sell your ml55 whatever it takes, its a very reliable bulletproof model !!! keep it forever.
So, first off, the ML430 is the predecessor to the ML500. They use V8 engines, unlike the more common V6’s in the ML3XX models. Look at the number of the modeling, and that will signify the engine code; ex: ML320 = 3.2L V6, ML430 = 4.3L V8, ML500 = 5.0L V8, etc. The ML55 AMG is a special AMG model that was pretty much a souped up sports model; meaning you basically had a “built” engine, better brakes, suspension, steering, etc. Engine was a bigger, bored out model of the M113 V8 motor; and the MB SLR Mclaren actually used the same engine design for their particular engine variant (M155). The AWD drivetrain was similar for most of the V6 and V8 models, but I believe the ML55 AMG had an upgraded transmission (NAG-1), with “beefier” internals; something that was stronger than typical factory ML models, but wasn’t as advanced as something like a shift kit. As far as parts and mods, good luck finding those these days… Most of the companies or aftermarket parts suppliers have either discontinued parts for those models, or have gone away altogether. I’m even surprised to even see people still having tuning platforms to be able to tune these late 90’s, early 00’s platforms…
Hey guys where is the ecu located in a 2000 ml55 amg ? , there is one in my local junk yard that I was trying to get the engine from but when I arrived to it the car was there for 3 weeks already before I noticed it on the website 😢. So yea engine was gone but the brake calipers were still there, so was the transmission & front / rear differential . My 2003 ml55 with 169k miles needs head gaskets so it’s either replace or rebuild the engine ( I rebuilt it !! ) & it got me thinking it do a swap at the very least grab the cams & toss them in . But I did walk away with the AMG cluster 😎 & i swapped it into my ml500 already & I cracked up 😂 when the mileage was 202k cause now I gotta reprogram it eventually
@@HeyboysGarage ML55 is a junkyard vehicle. My ML500 has a blown head gasket or failed timing case O-ring , got the engine out & on the stand now to disassemble, clean & rebuild
I think it says either $399 or $299 on RaceIQ Performance website. Visit their site and it will tell you. You can get a discount code from me if you plan to get a tune from them
