- What's better than a Suzuki Jimny? Two Suzuki Jimnys. The new Jimny is one of our favourite cars of the moment, for reasons even we can't figure out sometimes, but think it's down to its charm and honesty and its off-road brilliance.
And it is but the latest in an extended line of Jimny that stretches back half a century. Which made us think: let's put the latest Jimny into some kind of context by driving a classic of what was once often kindly, albeit incorrectly, known as the 'Suzuki Jeep'. So we got our hands on a 1980s Suzuki SJ410 and put it through the same paces as the latest Jimny as the modern car meets one of its heroic predecessors.

11:30 Not trying to suggest that the SJ410 is a safe car by any standards, but:
A friend of mine had one way back when we were in school. One morning I was the designated driver after a night out when we stopped at a set of lights. Another car (whose driver was most likely intoxicated) came up from behind and failed to stop in time. It slammed straight into the Suzuki's back, folding its own hood up like a piece of cardboard. That's all I could really see in the rearview mirror, because the guy immediately slammed it into reverse and took off at full speed. IIRC the car that rammed us was a mid/late 80s Ford Escort. We got out of the SJ to inspect the damage to our car and all there was was one broken tail-light.
I own an SJ413 in India and it's one of the best vehicles that I have ever owned. Everything I drive it which is only a few times a year as I live in Canada it brings a smile to my face. It's like meeting an old friend.
Sick of every review saying it's not a motorway car. Jesus you don't complain that hyper cars can't go off road in every review.
You are right, but the problem is that even if people buy an off roader they tend to use it most of the time in cities and motorway, and maybe off road in the week end, unless they have another car to daily drive with, so it is not so wrong to remind that it's not a good motorway car, even though maybe who buys it doesn't really care about tarmack performance
I have a 4x4 5 times the price of this car and honestly I'm looking forward to the Jimny more than my Landrover. It's for the Mrs but I will use it most weekends, it's a no nonsense up yours to the luxury limousines out there that's never seen a muddy puddle.

And obviously it can be driven on a motorway perfectly easily. It's not as if it is incapable of driving along a motorway, it's just marginally less comfortable than 'normal' cars but still rides and drives better than a Defender of Jeep Wrangler, which are its closest competitors. I have a previous generation Jimny and it will sit at 80mph on the motorway all day long. I'm 100% sure the new one can do the same.

Keep in mind this is a Santana, built in Spain, and while some of the spanish built ones are very interesting (some even have 2.1 td intercooler diesel engines), they are known for being generally usually slightly worse in build quality than their japanese built counterparts. I won't say that's why it rattles, but it could be a contributing factor.
The SJ is, quite simply, the coolest car in the world. We've had two of them (bright yellow and blue) in the family for more than 20 years and they bring nothing but laughter and enjoyment, not only to those in the cabin but to every onlooker. I think Suzuki did and amazing job in maintaining the character and spirit of the old legend.
I don’t think it’s possible to drive a jimmy and not have it bring a smile to your face especially if your off road.
I own an 1986 SJ413 and everything works as it should. Great car I love it, so simple, reliable and honest. I'm planing on keeping it running as long as I can.
I have an 87 JX and just love it.
There are many Suzuki Gypsy loyalists till date in India, which also includes Indian Army.. Our exclusive Gypsy off-roading group is known as @javarioffroaders.. As Autocar India once quoted "There's nothing that can touch a Gypsy off the road, except an Arjun battle tank"😎

The Jimny is a cracking little car - ideal for country living. It's not meant to be an S Class. It's meant to be a cheap Jeep. And it works brilliantly on that basis. It's f**ing brilliant off road.
SJ413 was my first car. How I adored it. So capable off road so much fun.
If only I could love my wife as much...

I had a 1981 first series LJ80 hardtop (Stockman) as my first car (800cc 4 cyl, 115kph flat out - ya gotta test it out) purchased in 1985 (back when probationary drivers were restricted 80kph) - basic as rocks, heaps of fun and absolutely bullet proof. Kept it for 3.5 years, sold it to a local farmer (whom, as far as I know, up to just a few years ago was still using it daily on the farm), because living in a hot climate, I wanted something with a/c - I still remember it very fondly.
Maybe get a Japanese one?
Why won't they bring the Jimny to the US!?!? The Jeep Wrangler has become crazy expensive, this would be an ideal alternative and likely more reliable. I loved my old Samurai.
Not only are the Wranglers expensive, but Jeep has no idea how to make a dependable vehicle, not even the transmissions...
Imagine not being able to depend on your transmission...on your off-roading vehicle. It's insane! After a couple months of researching capabilities and reliability histories and watching amateurs and professionals test drive different vehicles, I've decided on a Forester for my adventure vehicle instead.
Unless I have all this wrong, of course. Is my thinking illogical?
@@cl2043 Our Wrangler is a manual, the transmission is rock solid and clutch feel is excellent (almost 200k, all original). I hated the automatic versions and stuck with a manual. Highly recommended. Engine is good, manual transmission and frame are all excellent. Brakes, lines, alignment, yada yada - are frequent maintenance. I have an Outback, purchased after the Wrangler, and it's kinda great and kinda a nightmare. The gas tank has a rust hole on the top (how on the top???). To replace the tank you have to remove the rear drivetrain, differential, suspension and even the rear subframe - all to replace a gas tank. It's truly insane, and the Forester is like that too. It's a good car, many things are easy to maintain or replace, but some things are truly awful.
@@NomadicBristolview Oh, that could be where I'm going wrong, I was only looking at automatic transmissions. My first two vehicles were standard transmission, and the wife really doesn't have an interest in three-pedal driving.
@@cl2043 A Wrangler really shines with the manual, glad my wife prefers manual as well. We test drove a few of them in automatic, and neither of us could stand it - so bad we would've passed on the Wrangler entirely if that was the only option.
Why not? They would sell like hot cakes here in Colorado... A little more power for the mountain passes, I would buy one.
FUN FACT: These cars are so light that when they are put in water too deep they will float away for a good number of minutes haha luckily they have drain plugs in the footwells to easily drain the water back out
I've owned my 1988 Santana SJ410 (identical to the one in the vid but red :D ) for 2 years and I've slowly been restoring to its former glory and then some. I absolutely LOVE the thing to bits. I was seriously worried about the insane idea of a 1Ltr in an offroader but I must admit I was blown away by its capability. I drive it daily, and on weekends I offroad with big boys like Jeep Cherokees and Defenders, the little bugger leaves them in the dust as I scamper over rocks and mud.
I've upgraded the shocks and spring slightly to the more modern samurai ones as it can be painful on badly kept roads here in Malta, but these things can take a beating. Mine spent 20 years as a farmer/builders car around his farmland and still has very little rust.
TL;DR SJ410s are awesome and can float like a boat
The old one is a Suzuki Sierra here in Aus. Came in up to 1.3l 5spd, EFI, AC etc. Such a great car.

My dad had 2 SJ's & I LOVED them. My idiot sister rolled both of them going round corners when I was a kid.

@@backcountryadventure1813 LOL yup the 1984 one she just got her license when I was 6 n she took off to go camping with mates, got a phonecall 15 mins later n we found them standing next to it on it's side on the corner of a loose gravel road where the servo is just outta town (servo is "gas station" in Aussie speak)... second one was like decade later in the 1994 Suzi she was driving up the mountain range where we live n a semi-trailer truck went over the double line n she panicked n put it sideways in a ditch (better that then the 100m drop down the mountain). Thanks to that dumb mole I had to learn to drive in a PINK Hyundai Excel 🤣
Really wish Suzuki would come back to the states. I'd buy a swift and a jimny so damn quick.
I owned a 1996 SJ80 Coil Sprung. (Old style body, new coil suspension). Apocalyptic vagueness comes standard in all models, and was the most terrifying vehicle I've owned above 80kph. But it was absolutely unstoppable off-road. I absolutely loved taking the top off, grabbing a bunch of mates, and hitting the trails. Best car for any adventure
I'm so glad the new Jimny has stayed true to it's heritage unlike all of the 4WDs that've lost what once made them amazing.
JB43 owner for 6 years before I moved overseas and had to sell it. By far my favourite car I've ever owned. Can't wait to buy the new one.
I loved my old 1988 Suzuki Samurai. Soft top, 4WD, stick, No AC. I could hose out the inside. The paint finish was fantastic. Drove it a hard 105,000 miles never had a breakdown. Handled great in snow. Paid 6K USD sold it for 2K USD.
In India it was named Gypsy and this year Maruti Suzuki discontinued it. Hope they launch the new Jimny asap.
I live in Russia, I wrote some spare parts for Suzuki Samurai from India! It is much cheaper than from the USA!
It is likely not going to come. Check the new regulations that forced cars below 3.5 m length to go out of production.

@@professionalcannibal9787 That is the bigger Jimny Sierra with the 1.5 L engine. The JDM version is around the same length as a Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. I learnt about it recently. I do believe that a car would soon be launched with a longer wheelbase, based on the Suzuki Jimny.
The gyspy is a novelty, its sad that its being discontinued. Its a beautiful masterpeice of Suzuki.
Just collected my new 2020 Jimny after a 1 year wait, it replaces a Land Rover 90" TD5 and while the Jimny is quite a bit smaller and cant carry as much it is much more refined on the road, uses less fuel and our 3 dogs seem just as happy in the back and it traverses the same terrain as my TD5 did, l loved my TD5 but it couldn't compete with the Jimny for the things I need to do, my girlfriend is so impressed she is thinking about getting one for herself and she liked the TD5 as well.

I’ve got a sj410 for my first car. It’s lifted and got some mud terrains on it and it will go anywhere I point it off-road. Keeps up with all the big boys like defenders and discoveries! Brilliant car

Thanks for making this. I have a 29 year old Suzuki Sierra (Australian sj414) that has seen most of eastern and central Australia and done around 400,000km. I love the new models styling and would love to get one one day
I have owned Suzuki Samurai SJ 413 cabrio for several years. Restored the body. Very nice car, very comfortable for outdoor recreation !
I remember some years ago reading that the Jimny's reputation for being easy to tip over was tested and found to be overstated. The magazine doing the testing found that the conditions required to tip them over were the same to tip any other car. In the end they required a ramp to get it to tip. IIrc they concluded, at least in America, that the story was concocted to protect local manfacturers.
I had a mid eighties soft top back in 1991 and remember tearing around a mates property in it. Never came close to tipping over.
I owned an SJ410 for 2 years and yes it was fun, yes it was uncomfortable and yes it was dreadfully expensive on fuel, but it was also unforgettable and I'm glad to have had the experience.

Oh Lord... you’re killing me! I miss Suzuki so much here stateside. I’ve owned an 88 & 1/2 Samurai hardtop, a 92’ Sidekick soft top, a 94’ hardtop & 3 Swifts/Metros. They were bulletproof reliable. Easy to work on. Affordable to work on & for the most part, a joy to own. My heart breaks to see that new Jimny. How I wish Suzuki would return to the US.
Dear presenter, the SJ 410 was assembled and marketed in India as MG 410, petrol engine model with minor engine and suspension modifications which gave it a burst pick up better than the latest SUV & hatchbacks and was still a superb off roader. Only problem,you could never take your foot of the throttle for it bounce like a ping-pong ball. The steering was superb on road and off road.
They are well recognised in India, sir. It's called the mighty Gypsy. SJ is marked as MG here, MG410 for the 1.0L & MG413 for the 1.3L. People still crave these legends. Most budget 4x4 ever. Indian Army still uses them.
It was called a Sierra in Australia. It was bumpy, suffered from scuttle shake, and prone to tipping if driven recklessly. Cross winds on the freeway were terrifying. It was also great fun, especially in summer. The poor person's soft top.
I miss my SJ410 so dearly. It was so much fun to drive on forest "roads" and off the path.
A deere runs past at 5:30 LOL beauty of nature. The new jimny is amazing. It shows the middle finger to all fwd super aggresive looking crossovers because it's not meant to look cool but meant to be cool. Love that car

Great video, I have a 3rd gen, point about the gearbox is very true, I always liken it to a Transit van, long throw, but generally very precise if maintained. In fact there are a lot of ways in which it drives like a van, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, they are kings of the road afterall. :D

I've come to the SJ410 from BMW E39 528i. I used to drive like a maniac but I have to say I love the Samurai even more. I think by now I have thoroughly debunked the myth of the Samurai being a slow car. It isn't. Iď say that off the motorway I am usually the fasted car on the road. The 1.3i. 1st goes to 50km/h, 2nd to a 100. And they don't flip. That's another myth. And in the terrain I believe it's second to none. Especially because it's so light. Below 40km/h alway put it in the low range and it's a wonder. I just hope it lives longer than I do.

The Samurai in the states is a popular off roader..people lift them put 33 inch tires and 35 inch tires. Some do a diesel engine swap others put a Mazda rotary engine in them. Some have put v8s in them.

I had an 85' SJ410... Not a Samurai. I'm not 100% sure but, I don't think they started importing them until 86". I don't know how mine got in the country. I bought it from a dealership in Charleston SC. I couldn't find parts for it... Seriously... I couldn't even find windshield wiper blades that would fit it... But, damn I loved that thing! I couldn't stop it!!
"shaking and rattling like a skeleton masturbating in a filing cabinet"... great description of the SJ series... but with the SJ, you'd actually get places! i had an 89 GM-badged version of the north american-approved sequel, the Sidekick, and it was an absolute BEAST off road, and on the highway still nailed down 7L/100km or 40.3mpg(UK).. 5-speed and a rag top, real truck tires (Bridgestone Desert Duelers).. wish I still had it!
In Australia we had sj70 models 1.3l carby 70hp quite popular.
The older Sierra's (SJ410) here in Australia are still fetching close to there retail price because of the demand.I love the new shape(mini '90 Defender look).A perfect 100hp 1.5litre power to weight combination. Built for a purpose.$21-23,000AUD's puts this Suzi in the lower price bracket of 4WDs in Oz when the average no frills,no extra's bare bones 4WD (Toyota,Mazda,Isuzu,Ford etc) are in the $45-60,000AUD's mark plus on road, plus insurance.I'll definitely be looking at the Suzuki.
I look at it like this, my old SJ 413 LWB would go along the highway at a steady 60 mph but a customer of mine wouldn't take his Ferrari Testarossa down an old track behind me! I had an old Series III 88" diesel Land Rover, boy was it slow on the road, we had a heavy snowfall one year, cars were struggling everywhere, not me, in four wheel drive and chugged past all of them with a smile on my face ( did rescue a few blocking the road).
89 model on an H plate? My 1990 was on a G reg. By far the most fun vehicle I ever owned, might look at the new Jimny now that I don’t need my defender for towing any more. Good hearing the comparison between the SJ and the new one.
Drive my 1999 Santana Samurai LWB,SPOA,30inch tires,6,5 low gears,every day on the Autobahn 110kmh (now 750.000 km) with the third stock engine ha ha! I own it 10 years now.

This was called Suzuki Gypsy in India and was discontinued only last year. This was used by thousands of civilians and also the Indian army for decades with minimal maintenance. Truly a bullet proof machine.
The Samurai that you are testing had leaf springs, the Jimny has coil springs, of course the new version is more comfortable. You should have tested against the previous Jimny generation.
Your SJ410 is in extremely excellent condition! It looks like the exterior paint is original and the whole vehicle is in stock setting.

Well I own a 15 year old Maruti Gypsy in India. One of the best lightest and easiest off road vehicles ever. The Indian Armed Forces have been using these for the last 35 years. It is sad that the Company discontinued the Gypsy in March 2019.
I am 100% sure that the Samurai's rattling sound is from the windows inside the doors. It's worth it to upgrade.
so much like for this vehicle, u forgot to mention the 1.9 turbodiesel psa & diesel N/A renault santana made from 1999 to 2003, i got the psa version, pretty good but sure is short geared

It's a shame the Mk1 vitara was not in this video it classes the same,,they are still cheap but hard to find, now they are really rated in GB,, I have one (off road working) with 7 feet roof platform for fruit picking/tree pruning + winch metal bumpers + dihatsu wella wheels and more, it's a looker, and works for its keep, it's stable mate is a 1998 toyota rav, it works but not so heavy duty, they work as a pair when tee felling, they both pull mowers/harrows,, if I were younger I would be waiting for the New Jimny to be getting older and and not expensive,,
I put better shocks on, made it heaps better on highway driving, I tow also a small camper trailer which is fine also, able to sit on highway at 100 no worries.
Bizarrely DVLA say it was first registered 22nd January 1990 which would make it a G plate and likely an '89 built car. My guess is it's ex MOD then sold through auction after August 1990 to get a H plate.
Never pops the hood once, was really hoping to see how it looks in bone stock mode.

I disagree with almost every negative point you give. I've clocked over 60000km mostly at highway speeds sure it's not the best cruiser but it gets the job done. As for the vagueness of the steering that is to be expected for a 30yo car that probably still has all original warn out steering components that were designed to have lots of play for off-roading. Dispite all this I can still steer mine through a tight right 90 degree bends going 90kmph, so really if you think these are really issues you should stick to the Toyota Camry of four-wheel drives the LandCruiser which costs more than 10x as much. :)
Try seeing the suzuki gypsy(Jimmy) sold in india and compare it to the sj 410

Yep, we got the little ringdingas here in aus, they were near on unstoppable off road. If you did get stuck two people could pick one end up at a time, then jump back in and keep going, damn they were great little jiggers.

Suzuki should really bring the Jimny to the U.S. there aren't any good small 4x4's. I mean you can get a 2 door jeep but the prices are ridiculous. The Jimny would do really well in the U.S. market
I did 364 km in my Suzuki J X Sierra , 1.3 I actually worn the engine out .

Wish they still sold them in The United States, We have Jeep, But Fiat has been making them in China from July 1, 2014 on, great video, I had a 1992 and a 1996 Suzuki , and I got my son a 1991 , a friend had a 2002, we stopped getting here , in 2014.
