Eh, it's a Lamborghini, they're probably just doing it so they can hold their solid gold Apple watch out the window for everyone to see. Yeah, we see your watch, we also know that technology will be dated in 6 months and almost obsolete in 3 years. How much was it you paid for your $400 worth of technology? Oh, $15 000? And a massive thanks to the owner for letting you (and us) experience this. I was expecting this to be a non-driving video like the Enzo. So awesome to see it in action!
If he did it in USA probably he would drive it. The Enzo was in Australia, I would understand the owner being concerned, LHD and left side traffic does not really raise confidence in driving. Maybe if it was a USA owner then sure the owner would probably let Doug drive it.
Huzaifa Khan not a bad business strategy. Not only is your company getting exposure but so is your stock. All for the price of letting some guy drive it around for the day lol
Seriously, nobody talking about that hilarious ending? xD Doug, the type of guy to say the 959 is "just an old Porsche" to a bunch of strangers, and then blow out a camera like it is a candle.
You all know that most people that own something like a Lamborghini know what the hell a 959 is, right? It's a super rare supercar that's worth over a million dollars, it's not a secret what it is. They are pulling up going "holy shit that's a freaking 959" and half or more of them are going " I wish I could afford to buy that", because a $250,000 Huracan is a long way off from a million dollars or more. There are few people into cars that don't know about the original gods, the 959, F40 and McLaren F1.
Yeah. Two totally different worlds separated just by a brick wall. Our sons will never believe us when we'll tell them about the cold war and the iron curtain. And yet a lot of Germans and Russian still have good memories of the DDR and the USSR.
It's a cycle, buddy. Yes, the west was advanced at the time. But look what's happening now: China is pulling ahead with albeit crappy quality, yet massive infrastructure and goods. Russia is resilient to whatever the US and its lapdogs throw at it and is even beating the west at their own neoimperialistic games (Foreign disinformation, proxy wars). So yeah, let's hope there's still progress like that in 50 years time.
I´ve read an anecdote in a German car magazine, that during the development of the 959 chief R/D engineer Helmut Bott returned from a test drive and said to his staff: "At 125 mph the car feels a bit squirmy..." The engineers were shocked before he added: "...on gravel..."
As I said, doesn´t go beyond anecdotal evidence, but a least the story originated from a respectable car magazine before the internet. Could still be made up, of course.
Bmac 814, absolutely. And this one here was just driven by a little old lady at Le Mans on Sundays. Perfect for a beginner. Shall I start the paperwork?
@@ostrichcum9369 The Countach was very basic mechanically compared to the 959; maybe in style it was ahead of its' time but nothing actually measurable.
@Doug DeMuro Thanks Doug - excellent video!! A few points here: 1. The "Gelaende"-gear is not for Off-roading, it was done to make it street-legal in Germany back then. The Noise is measured IIRC at third gear, 4000rpm. So, it was tested in fourth gear instead of third and the car passed barely. For the pronounciation of "Gelaende" think of "Gelende" as the "e" in "Porsche" which you spoke spot-on. 2. The anti-theft sticker made sense back then, in the 90ies the crappy stock radio of my neighbor's 1987 VW Polo got stolen which had a value of 10DM at best. Whoever did it was addicted to heroine for sure - today addicts get methadone legally, that's why thefts went down significantly. 3. The first aid-kit and everything in it is required by German law, although the packing has become more compact today. But these things are still available over here. Greetings from Germany!!
Still kind of funny to find one of the better reviews of that car on an American channel. Last I remember done in Germany was by Malmedie, but it wasn’t in depth.
IKR... i can not believe car manifacturers r still milking options with TPS and electric seats and shit.. Like wtf... even our 1991 dodge grand caravan had that... we live in 2019 very soon and its still a "premium option" wtf..., its fuckin time to stop acting like moneywhores...
A 200mph car can still feel relatively slow if it doesn't accelerate all that fast, and on paper, the 959 has a slower 0-60 time than some literal soccer mom cars Doug had reviewed at this point. So yes, the fact he was still impressed by its speed is pretty surprising.
@@ZCAB Cool story but none of those are mom cars. Also, "fast" is a measure of speed, not acceleration. A Tesla is not that fast at all by modern standards but it accelerates better than most high performance cars.
@@Oscar-fi1ev Sure, if you ignore all context of what he says and does in that part of the video, and solely focus on the word "fast", you could say he was talking about top speed rather than acceleration. As he was just stepping on the gas, not going even near 200mph on a public highway. Also, while I'll grant you the GTC4Lusso purely for being a Ferrari, you can't tell me that shoving a big engine in a Grand Cherokee or a E-Class wagon suddenly makes them not a mom car.
I'm fine with TH-camrs doing non-invasive ads like that, especially if they're in the beginning. It's quick, to the point, and the product isn't super annoying.
Most of the ads I can't wait to hit the 'skip' button. However on one of the 3 ads this video had was a story (by Travelers insurance) about a young 20-year old runner who was hit by a car (the driver picked up a ringing cell phone), RIP 1993-2013. 20 yrs old and died from something that was 100% preventable. Sad.
One of the best cars of all time imo! I had never seen the suspension being raised before - so thanks for that. I was actually fortunate enough to see these being built in Zuffenhausen in the spring of 1986, when I was having a special guided tour at their facilities. It was a day to remember!
Doug has officially driven the holy Trinity of modern Porsche supercars... Let him find a Speedster and he'll never need to look at another Porsche again
They used this engine in Group C cars like 956 and 962C, but I wouldn't try it with a same boost, Le Mans racing engine might have "a bit more" endurance in it. If I remember right they used it in some version of 935 too. That racing engine was so reliable that they say they could race another 24h race in a row.
That first aid kit is mandatory in Germany. If your car has no first aid kit where all the stuff inside has not passed its date of expiry your car won't get "TÜV", which essentially means that you will not be allowed to drive your car on public streets. Also the police can check your first aid kit in a normal police control if they want.
Tiff Needel have testdriven it, but it caught fire if I remember it correctly. Something about the cooling on the car was made for the racetrack, and drive it slow around in town overheated the engine. (I might remember it wrong) but I love that car, and I want one :)
Honestly, if I ever reach a point in my life when I can afford it, my personal car collection will be complete with two cars: Porsche 959 and Ferrari F40. Two brilliant cars from same era, so close in performance, but so different they have nearly nothing in common.
yes close but having the ferrari behind for a huge diference the porshe was built to be much faster and complete than the F40 ,and so it did .It should be the first thing to say about this car not anything else ,like group B?wtf!, regards
A few years ago, I worked at the Orlando International Airport in FL. I worked on the Emirates airline account as a ramp lead. We routinely had some serious super cars coming in on that flight in the cargo bay that we had to unload like a few Lamborghini's and McClarens. But the car I will never ever forget for as long as I live was the White Porsche 959. And it was one of those rare stripped down versions Doug mentioned in this video. It even had a roll cage inside. As the ramp lead, I was the one who was trusted to go inside and steer the car out. I knew exactly how special the car was soon as I saw it. I knew what a 959 was and I told my agents to be extremely careful not to scratch this car. I still have photos of it on my phone. It was the highlight of my time at that job.

Never assume someone's broke by how they dress. My old boss drove around a Chevy pickup in jeans and a T-shirt and was nearly a billionaire. He spent a easy $300-500k per year just on running his sport fishing boat between our salaries and fuel. Not to mention the $7.8 million for a 87ft Hatteras.
Great observation, ehem!, you honor. I love how you illustrated it. I gotta say, though, it's the everyman appeal is what's best about Doug. It's the contrast between how casual and straight forward he presents himself, and the vehicles he's reviewing.

Quite right. Back in the early noughties, I had a little more money than most my age. Not a great deal, but enough. I was on holiday in Spain, , and walked past a little shop, with quite a few people inside and a slightly upmarket look to it. In the window was a nice looking little chess set that I wanted to buy. I saw the price tag, could afford it. (it was about £70 iirc) and I walked in with my 'tourist' clothes to purchase. Woman at the counter immediately came round and pretty much pushed me out of the shop. Walked way a bit annoyed, because I can guarantee I could afford anything they had in there.

If Doug just sat there staring at it for 15 mins, I'd still upvote. I was a teenager when this car came out. It was simply mind blowing. The tech it had was barely talked about let alone implemented. It's all pretty common now, but in the 80's it was all unheard of. Possibly the most significant single model ever made.
@@@wronggg Maybe from a manufacturing standpoint (The model T)?...But not from a technological one. This car was called that at the time, the same way the 918 has been called that when it came out. And if you wanna go that route (the Model T). Let's mention some of the original Benzes and Daimler's from 1888. SMH
The worse day would be to rear end an old minivan, wrinkling the 959's nose just enough to jam the latch of the front hood, and not being able to get to the bandages in the first aid kit. I better stick with my Matchbox version of 959.
I can vouch for the $ amount. Towed a beautiful silver 959 a few years ago. Customer bought it at an auction for $1.9M and had it towed home. He didn’t tell me the $ value until I loaded it, he didn’t want me to be nervous about it. Car only had 50k on the clock.
Wow, a super rich and considerate Porsche owner. Quite the rarity. :P If I was getting my 1.9M vehicle towed the value would be the first thing I'd tell the tow driver.
Hi Doug, greetz from Germany - the first aid kit is not a special from Porsche, it is regulated by german law. it must contain the things you had shown. on the label, where you can put in your name and the licence plate, there is the information of the norm on the top. btw. love your reviews !
The ignition key needed for wheel removal, the G gear, the multi tone silver leather and being able to lift the suspension ABOVE normal ride height are among the craziest quirks Doug has ever presented
This first aid kit is a very german thing. The reason you can write your name and lincense plate in the booklet is also very german: In case you do help in an accident with your kit and it gets "used", you can get a refund from the insurance of the person you are helping. So you can easily send the booklet there and get your money. Very German, but that's how it is! :-)
Geez, Germans are so cheap they claim a refund on a first aid kit that mostly costs around 10-20 euros? Okay, this one is pricier, but most kits aren't.
@@MetalTrabant I doubt you could get a genuine Porsche 959 First Aid Kit for 10-20 euros! Also I suspect the first aid kit was so elaborate because it's intended as a rally car - you could actually get hurt driving it! @@AlvinBrinson That's why I said that the 959 kit is of course pricier... but Karl said it's a usual thing in Germany to get refunds on kits from the insurance companies, when a normal first aid kit is just around 20 euros in a random shop.
I had a very wealthy family friend who used to own one of these spectacular cars... (He had around 10 different Porsches and a few oddballs like a Prowler and a Jag too). The 959 was his baby... He loved that car... Even such, he let me go for a ride in it and I still remember it to this day...
@@coaster9458its not boring but too comfortable and felt too smooth when driven on almost any type of surface as a supercar added technology that is ahead of its time compared to its rival the ferrari f40 which is a raw thrill driving experience
It may not be the best but it is the most iconic and interesting Porsche of all time . In my view the 959 and Testerossa were the king and queen of the 80’s.
Sean Byrne I have an affection for 80s cars. The Delorean was awful but very handsome . I also love the Toyota Supra of the 80s . And on a quirky note I love the Saab 900 SPG. I guess it’s natural to love the cars of ones youth.
I owned and drove a 959 Komfort model for many years using it frequently. I was the 2nd owner and I knew the first owner and history. When I bought it the car needed some work which was accomplished with the help of PCNA and a really good old school Porsche Tech. It took some doing but eventually the car was extremely well sorted out. I also lived on a dirt road. My favorite memory is driving down the paved road at speed (100+ mph) and turning onto the dirt road changing the torque split and raising the car in mid turn. Fun. However, the hydraulic suspension was questionable at speed. I was afraid to drive it at speeds over 150 mph and don't even think about the track. G is first gear. I believe the first aid kit may have been a German road registration requirement. There is very little room under the front bonnet. Your test car didn't have the tool kit, tire pump, service manual etc. which lives there. The torque multiplying center lock wrench is really cool. The cab always seemed maybe 10% smaller than a 911 of the same period hence the tightness you experienced. Notice the lack of rain gutter..the cab is not 911. The "S" model is a decontented Komfort model not an "RS" Instead of hydraulic (lift) suspension it uses double coil-overs which made the car a significantly better handling car. And yes, most "S" models eliminated the right side mirror. But I recall the rear view mirrors (both) as the best rear view mirrors, for whatever reason, in any car I had owned previously or since. In driving an "S" I missed it. I loved owning the car. I loved seeing it in the garage. But I don't miss driving it. It was so complicated and parts were unobtainable. I often felt I was in a ticking time bomb. One more piece of trivia. The service manual contained instructions for making the test box which was necessary to reset the suspension and diagnose issues. If the suspension or anything else was out of whack there were all sorts of buzzers and lights to warn you. My test box was made with Radio Shack stuff and was never anywhere near Weissach.. When you plugged it in, depending on the test or problem, the manual instructed you what buttons to push in a complicated sequence with the answers showing up as a series of complicated blinking (warning) dash lights almost like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." It was somewhere between analog and digital but it did work.
I genuinely think this looks better than F40 and most other beautiful 80's cars its so simple and humble looking that people consider it typical but I don't
One of the craziest days of my life was the day I pulled up behind a beautifully kept silver 959 on my way to Mississauga from Toronto on the Lakeshore. The fact that I saw one of 345 worldwide cars in Canada with correctly located plates in the wild only a few months ago is almost unbelievable. To this day one of the coolest car experiences I've had.
You know you're driving something ultra-cool when exotic car drivers pull up and start taking video of your car. Either that or you're driving something so bad that it's also cool.
10:40 The reflection on the inlet vent makes me think there was some thought behind the shape and size as it looks like it creates a vortex of airflow. Pretty cool!
The gear G was actually intended to be used as first gear and had a short ratio for quick launches. But because of regulations, certain emission and noise measuring had to be done in first gear in order to get the car road legal. The 959 would have violated these regulations in gear G so they called the second gear first gear, lowering the revs.
I honestly had to retranslate what he was saying from his english translation. @Doug: This website is awesome and you can listen to the German words: www.dict.cc/
Yes, that's what all the extra cooling is for at the rear, under the covers Doug pointed out. A bit like the 996 that came later, except the 996 radiators were at the front ? Sorry I am a Porsche nerd

When I was in HS, everyone had the posters of the Corvette, the Countach, the Testarossa, even the occasional Esprit (if the woman standing next to it was hot enough). Me? I had a 959 poster, my favorite car of the bunch. Thanks for this video. It's always been a favorite of mine, but there were precious few pics of stuff like the engine bay and trunk.
Besides the fact the 959 is more rare, the F40 is way more fun to drive and has a lot more to do with driving pleasure, that’s what people like who like cars and that would be the reason people lose their mind when seeing a F40, it’s a icon.

Doug - with 7000 comments, probably someone has already addressed this: That First Aid Kit is nothing special. Over here in the land of the Autobahn we have a "Good Samaritan" law that requires witnesses of a traffic accident to stop and assist. That is why all registered vehicles (4 wheels and more) are required to have a First Aid Kit built to spec. They are "DIN" normed as a minimum and they are almost all exactly that size. That is why it fit so perfectly in the slot made for it. If you think about a bad accident (the 70s and 80s were a mess out on the Autobahn before ABS and airbags and crash proofed cars), this kit is not overdone at all. It also makes tons of sense to let people personalize their kit with name and vehicle plate number. You can leave it at the scene and the cops will have a litte more info about who stopped and assisted and possibly witnessed the event. Pretty smart, actually. Not much different today - with the addition of a foil space blanket. The old kits from the 70s even had smelling salts in them, lol. First Aid Kits are recommended for Motorcycles too, but right now there isn't a law requiring them.
Having a first aid kit without proper first aid training is like having a set of the best automotive tools and barley knowing what a screw driver is for, a layman can do more harm than good with either, there have been doctors and nurses who have stopped to help in accidents and wound up with a big lawsuit on their hands instead of thanks for saving a life, you can't be forced to be a good Samaritan most people wouldn't have the nerve or stomach to see the aftermath, better off leaving it to the trained professionals, another thing some people have become victims themselves by stopping especially on busy highways, they have been struck and killed trying to help, even the act of simply helping someone change a tire has led to someone being killed.
@@Peter-pv8xx I agree with you 100%. However, this is Germany and they have their rules for a reason. Every licensed driver has to take and pass a first aid course and they are taught that any help is better than no help. I have also never heard of anyone being sued for assisting - probably because there is a law that states you must. Obviously, if you are puking your guts out because the accident scene is so gruesome - then you can't offer much assistance anyways, right?
Too bad we don't have that first aid course requirement in America, we could keep a lot of idiots and senile people off of the road. Also it should include lectures on how to avoid getting your phone out and taking video of accident victims as they die
We used to call that a “Granny Gear” which old farm truck had so they could get out in a field and walk along beside it while it moved slow enough to load bales of hay into the back.
The G-Gear stand actually for "Geländegang" wich means something like offroadgear, and was implemented because of sound-regulations at that time, so it could claim to have 5 gears instead of 6.

@@Oscar-fi1ev The Jeep Trackhawk, Ferrari GTC4Lusso and Mercedes E63S Wagon are just three examples I can think of off the top of my head.

Hi Doug, greetz from Germany - the first aid kit is not a special from Porsche, it is regulated by german law. it must contain the things you had shown. on the label, where you can put in your name and the licence plate, there is the information of the norm on the top. btw. love your reviews !
Everything is regulated by german law :-P.
@@rsr789to be honest, i am not sure if it is german law or european law. you can buy the first aid kit ready or a refill set.

Hey
The 959 is a veritable quirk fest
This first aid kit is a very german thing. The reason you can write your name and lincense plate in the booklet is also very german: In case you do help in an accident with your kit and it gets "used", you can get a refund from the insurance of the person you are helping. So you can easily send the booklet there and get your money. Very German, but that's how it is! :-)
Geez, Germans are so cheap they claim a refund on a first aid kit that mostly costs around 10-20 euros? Okay, this one is pricier, but most kits aren't.
MetalTrabant Oh yes, they are!
@@MetalTrabant I doubt you could get a genuine Porsche 959 First Aid Kit for 10-20 euros!
Also I suspect the first aid kit was so elaborate because it's intended as a rally car - you could actually get hurt driving it! Plus you could plow into a crowd mustang style and have to patch up a dozen different spectators.
@@AlvinBrinson That's why I said that the 959 kit is of course pricier... but Karl said it's a usual thing in Germany to get refunds on kits from the insurance companies, when a normal first aid kit is just around 20 euros in a random shop.

It may not be the best but it is the most iconic and interesting Porsche of all time . In my view the 959 and Testerossa were the king and queen of the 80’s.
959 the king, Testarossa the queen, and Countache the court jester. But the 288gto is my favorite, the princess of the castle.

That's awesome
This is amazing…thank you

10:40 The reflection on the inlet vent makes me think there was some thought behind the shape and size as it looks like it creates a vortex of airflow. Pretty cool!
The gear G was actually intended to be used as first gear and had a short ratio for quick launches. But because of regulations, certain emission and noise measuring had to be done in first gear in order to get the car road legal. The 959 would have violated these regulations in gear G so they called the second gear first gear, lowering the revs.
11:44 the "G" gear means "Gelände". Your pronunciation was funny Doug - it sounded more french than german though=)))
In English it stands for "granny" gear !!

@Sean Jones damn dude, people want to know what has genuinely gone wrong with the world today and you couldn't have spelled it more clearly.

Came here to post this. Many trucks have it for starting with large loads or for off-roading. Interesting that the G works in both German and English.
The G-Gear stand actually for "Geländegang" wich means something like offroadgear, and was implemented because of sound-regulations at that time, so it could claim to have 5 gears instead of 6.
