The Porsche 959 is an engineering marvel. And thanks to it, I was able to buy a Slyline GT-R R32 back in early 2000’s. Nissan fully bought and used the 959 to develop many of its system. So never would I be able to buy a 959 but I do enjoy a very poor man’s version. lol. Not even a close car but so glad those guys pushed to get this ever so sweet 959 into existence 🙏
Thanks Alex, DJ, and Ken for making this video possible. The 959 was the summation of my car enthusiasm as a teenager in highschool. This brings it all back and the history and insight of the 959 shared in this video makes it all the more special to me.
It's so sad, that a company with that sort of engineering excellence, had to propagate the nonsense that a car with the engine hanging out the back of the car in back of the rear axle, was a safe way to have an average driver to enjoy pushing the limits of handling on public roads. The insanity of using men's insecurity over their masculinity, to sell more cars, when they could instead have shown the world what great cars that they COULD make, is indefensible. The 911 rear engine design killed more drivers than any other engineering farce. More than exploding Pintos, more than swing axle Corvairs. And it continues to this day. The only selling point of a rear engine 911, is to try to prove to the world what a manly man you are, able to 'tame the beast' of a truly lousy handling car. Case in point; Porsche 911 fans actually deride Boxters and Caymans for being 'sweet handling cars', as if it's not a car 'that a REAL man would choose to drive'. Think about that for a moment; choosing to drive a lesser capable car, because it's 'more manly'. That is just insane, but huge numbers of men truly believe that they need to prove their manhood by doing stupid things.
@@d.e.b.b5788 You know jack shit. It was never about ego or "proving how much of a manly man you are", and that wouldn't be porsche's fault even if it was. Some people just do it because of the excitement. The 930 is still one of my dream cars purely for those reasons. I mostly ride bikes when it comes to performance oriented stuff and the first thing I do is turn off all the aids, not because I need to prove to myself, much less to anyone else, how much my cock smells, but because having a superduke attempt to throw you off while at the same time lifting the front out of a corner is peak fun. Also, I've never seen someone in a porsche space tell someone else he's not a real guy for not getting a 911. McLarens also kill TikTokers like Porsches kill doctors. You literally pulled that whole thing out of your ass just to whine about people having fun. Looks like you're part of the huge number of women who need to prove their womanwhood by complaining over nothing.
The 959 is amazing because of how it was so ahead of its time. So much stuff that it introduced we still use today like adjustable dampers, height adjustable suspension, ABS, TPMS, traction and stability control...it's puffy looking but I think it's beautiful, it's like a 911 with some armor.
Best analogy I've read. It's like someone took the automobile version of a warrior ready for their final fight, and told them what was said in the video, "Win, win everything, and win at any FUCKING cost."
I think your videos deserve an actual series on t.v. or streaming apps. They are better then most car documentaries that have professional budgets. Thank you for putting in such an effort to make them because its so rare to find car videos that are both educational and entertaining at the same time.
I appreciate that! I kinda prefer them here because tv and streaming apps require someone to pay for them. They’d be restricted to certain regions or financial situations and I believe history should be free for everyone
Squidd is far to humble - he's a brilliant leader in the truest sense. A person who has grand visions and is able to share, or rather force an infection of, those visions onto others. We are merely swept up in the tide.
There are few other brands that champion their motorsports program and privateer support quite like Porsche (Hyundai is probably the best student of Porsche's dedication). Thanks for showing their history warts and all!
@@the.squidd Being a huge Nismo guy (my trackday toy is an h-shift G35 with all the SPL Parts and Z1 bits with some Öhlins dampers/Swift coils), you rung my bell with the Nissan GT-R (Godzilla) video, doing a Hyundai (and Kia) video showing how they went from a brand where '90s kids wanted their mom to drop them off two blocks away from school to avoid bullying for being poor, to being one of the few brands to push the limits with their N brand track support and soccer moms getting into fist fights in show rooms over the last CUV in inventory would be amazing!
Ive always said everything you did about the 959. It created the greatness we see today. It was THE reason we have things today in our vehicles we take for granted and think it was someone else. Nobody looks at the 959 for what it really is, and its sad. It deserves so much more respect and love.
The 959 was fantastic, no doubt. And it certainly had many firsts on a production road car. But saying it is THE reason we have those things today is a tad bit silly. That suggests nobody else would have thought up things like ABS or TPMS on their own eventually. Maybe the 959 sped things up, but the odds that nobody else would have ever had any of those ideas is unlikely.

The 959 has always been a car I have lusted over for over 40 years now. It's an example of engineering decades ahead of its time with performance that even today is still very high end.

This is the best car content out there in any media! I can’t imagine how much research, time, editing, and effort go into each one of these series. I hope squidd sticks around for a long time. Big ups!
My thoughts of Porsche and the 959 is that Porsche pushed automotive technology at least 10 years ahead of itself, at great cost to their own company, but as a massive benefit to the rest of the automotive world. ABS, automatic leveling suspension, variable damping, compound turbocharging, torque-vectoring AWD, TPMS, all absolutely incredible to debut in the 1980s, where even legendary sports cars like the Corvette, the GTR, the Evo, and many others just starting to borrow that same technology at least 5-10 years behind the 959. Porsche really is an incredible company, and the automotive industry owes them so much. All that information masterfully delivered by your talent is what makes your videos right up there with the best automotive mini-documentaries.
the amount of time it is taking for TPMS to filter down into more normal vehicles is absurd. I had BMW motorcycles (at the time, priced similarly to a Toyota Camry - somewhat expensive for bikes, but definitely not in car terms) with factory-fitted TPMS in 2008. TWENTY ONE YEARS after the 959! And not even a common feature in 2024 bikes. My VW Polo GTI from 2008 also has TPMS but doesn't actually show the pressures anywhere (why???) so you can't observe if they're trending down or not, or whether they're still mostly safe but slightly down, and doesn't tell you which tyre is affected. Just one warning light. Really not a very useful system
When you realize you have watched half the videos from the recommend, I guess it’s a good time to subscribe 😂. Great work man. Also I agree with the look of the 959. I thought it was ugly also but super cool when it came out as a kid. It has grown on me over the years but only because of what the car represents in history. The tech it had was crazy. Adults were barely figuring out that stuff back then so for a kid it really was science fiction.
sub or no sub, just happy you enjoy the stories! Thanks for spending time with us! and yeah, now that i know WHY the 959 looks like that, i dont hate it as much... but its still god awful ugly to me.
The best thing about this video...is that it's a video I didn't know needed to be made! Even as a fan of Porsche and it's innovation, I never quite understood just how far ahead this car was! Thank you for everything about this video! This is the kind of content car lovers crave!

50:09 I would like to add a few kind words about Heinz Branitzki here. I know he was CEO for only a short time. But he was a member of the board under Peter Schutz. So I think he was very much involved in the whole 959 process. But most of all he was a very very friendly and kind gentleman. I know this because he was our neighbor until he died 2016. He and his wife were incredibly polite and very heartwarming people. Especially to me as a child back in the nineties. I have very fond memoreis of them and although I know this video is not about him at all I wanted to take the opportunity to mention it. 🙂 To me it was a nice moment when I saw the picture of him in this video.
Thank you everyone on the team making these videos possible. Can't think of anything better, car related, on TH-cam or any other platform right now. Keep up the great work!
An unexpected Christmas present yet a welcomed one! You Sir and your amazing team managed to grab the essence of what Porsche brand stands for, for the last 7-8 decades and fused it into a car nerd's fairytale where 56 min felt like few seconds and I wouldn't mind staying just a little bit more just so I can enjoy the magic of exceptional automotive journalism that you do! Just when I thought that the bar cannot be lifted even higher, you and your team manage to prove me dead wrong. I can't wait for the next amazing story and wish you and your team happy holidays and fruitful new year!
Another great video! Genuinely, the quality of production astounds me every time. Still waiting for the Dacia Logan at the 24hrs of Nürburgring video. That would hit in the feels so much!
Another goosebump inducing documentary Squidd. Brilliantly told. The 959 certainly is an icon that lives on in every car nowadays. Pretty amazing when you look and realize how far we've come with automotive technology since the mid 80's. Awesome work!
The wheels and tires on the 959 are even more special than "just" hollow spokes and TPMS. They featured Dunlop's Denloc system that secured the tire to the wheel by a special design. So those Bridgestone tires ended up with some runflat capabilities aswell. It's a similar, discontinued technology like Michelin's TRX approach.
Kind of reminds me of the T-Bird Ford made that looks like a retro 50s Corvette, not a 50s T-BIRD. The front looks so similar. That Porsche was able to get all the electronic stuff to actually perform with whatever they used for a CPU was a unmentioned miracle,in it's self.
Once again I am baffled about how 3 of you can make a video that rivals, or exceeds the quality and the enthusiasm of the car shows that are in tv. You fuel my passion for the car industry and give me knowledge that I Cheris! Thank you for this high quality!

Growing up, my first real encounter with the 959 and understanding what it was, was Need For Speed Porsche unleashed on ps1. I think its a beautiful design. But to each there own. And thank you Squidd for another marvelous presentation, I always respected the 959, but it elevated it to another level after learning about how influential this car was and the pigheaded stubbornness of the brilliant people that dared to persisted and stuck to their guns and got to see their efforts come to life. I hope Herr Bott & Schutz are alive today and get to reflect on the marvel they created and the ripple they had on the industry which in a lot of German ways is understated yet titanic.

Everyone makes fun of Porsche for only making the same 911 for 60 years, but look what happens when they try to venture out of their comfort zone, we get crap like the Cayenne, 914, 928, and 944.
You‘re entitled to your opinion, but you‘re basing it on looks alone. Drive those 4, educate yourself and then reevaluate your inane comment. The 914 runs circles around a 911 in terms of street handling and the 928 and 944 were technological innovations of their time, bringing tech also to the 911 in future models. Don‘t be an „Elfer-snob“.
The 1980s-era 959 Porsche is gorgeous. It's priceless engineering. . The Porsche 911 from its beginning in 1963 through the decades ending in 1998 was a masterpiece in evolution engineering. ..
@@d.e.b.b5788If Porsche had the balls they would have ditched the 911 early on and proceeded with mid and front engined cars like everyone else.

Dang it Squidd….I really had stuff to do today! Now I have to watch your video first! Your videos captivate me my man! Much respect to you!
"Kids, this year no Christmas tree."
My biggest takeaway from this video is just how incredible Porsche's marketing was. Those intercut ads are stunning.
Great work as always, Squidd!
I've said it before and likely will on every video you post- There is no better car channel on TH-cam. These documentaries are well written, well edited, masterfully paced; Emotional, inspiring, and reaffirming. I love this channel and the videos, and every one of them leaves me feeling better educated, motivated, and strengthens my passion for cars

The greatest car channel on TH-cam and it’s not even close. Savage geese, throttle house and others do amazing reviews and create good content but there’s not a channel on TH-cam that matches the quality, editing, voice over audio, writing or beauty of execution of this channel. I’ve never seen a bad video here (the motorcycle one may not have gotten the views but well worth the time spent) and this one is a show of growth and commitment to quality that will keep me watching everything you make for decades. You could make the next one about matchbox cars and I’d watch it.
Agreed, the history The Squidd throws at us to tell a complete story is among the best!

I first saw the 959 in the Summer of '86; my friend Andy had a magazine article framed on his wall. I fell in love instantly, and it's been my absolute favorite car ever since. It would be my lotto car for sure. So, I'll likely never own one, but I can watch & enjoy your great video. Thanks.
Here’s hoping you one day at least can sit in one! I’ll likely never own my dream cars either but it is nice to know they exist
The 959 has always been a car I have lusted over for over 40 years now. It's an example of engineering decades ahead of its time with performance that even today is still very high end.
These documentaries are so breathtaking, I have to remind myself to breathe.
Amazing writing and production by you and your team. Here's to an even better 2024! 🐙

Probably over 150 hours of work combined between all of us!
Did it for glory an to go 200 mph 1st
the amount of time it is taking for TPMS to filter down into more normal vehicles is absurd.

To me it was a nice moment when I saw the picture of him in this video.

It's a similar, discontinued technology like Michelin's TRX approach.
you're not alone with your feelings of it being goofy looking. as amazing as it is, it's a odd looking car. great work as always 👍👍

@26:50 the 959 Nissan bought to design the ATTESA system with just sold at auction for 3 million dollars

Honestly. This is the best Christmas present I could have gotten today. Squidd your stuff is top tier!! Always look for it. Thanks man!!!!
The 1980s-era 959 Porsche is gorgeous. It's priceless engineering. . The Porsche 911 from its beginning in 1963 through the decades ending in 1998 was a masterpiece in evolution engineering. .. Sure the chassis morphed some, yet the green-house (roof, glass, doors) stayed the same and is largely interchangeable. .. Re; 1998 911 Carrera S (993) Original owner. . You can take my 993 from my cold dead hands!
P.S. Have a look at what Canapa Motorsports does with 959s. .. Bruce Canapa was more than instrumental in EPA certifying the 959 into the States. . Cheers, M/S
