  • Hi and welcome to Wrong Way! Today we feature an electric mountainboard called SYL-08. It's provided by Geekbuying so huge thanks to these guys! It is a two-wheel drive board with a remote, a range of around 20km and a reasonable top speed of 35 km/h. Is it worth to pay 500 dollars for this electric skateboard? Or are you better off buying an evolve, boosted, OneWheel or Wowgo board? Let's find out!
    similar to H2C board.

I've clock mine at a top speed of 39Km/h in fairly leveled ground and it was the single scariest thing i did with this board.
The board is very stable at low to medium speeds, but it gets squirrely at high speeds (sort of hunting oscillation). It is over sensitive to steering inputs and is very easy to lose control. Fortunately the bindings are easy to dismount at speed.
The control is digital and is not linear at all. It has speed "levels" and "gears". For example:
You give 20% throttle on the controller, the board accelerates slowly to say, 10Km/h, you then give it 33,3% throttle input, the board will only go up to still 10Km/h but more aggressively, you give 40% throttle the board now accelerates slowly to 15Km/h, you give 50% throttle and the board accelerates more aggressively to still 15Km/h. And it goes on like this through every speed "level" until it reaches its top speed. (This is for the controller setup for "Expert" ride mode.)
There are 4 ride modes: Beginner (ofc), ECO, Expert and finally Professional mode.
    - Beginner ride mode: has soft accelerations and many "gears", the throttle sort of works like a shifter kart but with 10 - 12 "gears". You slam the controller throttle knob forward quickly to go up in "gears". Battery last a lot of time in this ride mode and thus you can travel further.
    - ECO ride mode: is like the beginner ride mode but has medium accelerations, less and longer "gears". 8 gears if i remember correctly. Battery last almost the same as the previous mode.
    - Expert ride mode: Has a harder acceleration, only one "gear" and the throttle behaves as explained above. Battery last less time that the previous mode.
    - Professional ride mode: Very hard acceleration, only one "gear", same throttle behavior as previously said. Battery drains very fast. So far i only rode once in this mode and the battery lasted only 5Km. Less than half the range of beginner ride mode.
The board does have regen capability and is proportional to the braking input. (the harder you brake, the more it charges the battery). Do not brake for long periods of time right after of having recently charged the board or there is the possibility of overcharging the battery pack and that is not good.

This was pleasant, informative and accurate. For visitors from the future: the motor mount issue has been completely fixed with a smart rework of the whole train.
The motors in the new versions of SYL-08 that they are sending out at the moment of writing are still mounted on independent arms attached to the board, but are connected by 3 sturdy metal rods that protect the engines and keep them perfectly aligned.
Speed also seems to have went up. I can easily reach 40kmh on flat ground with no slope.
On very good asphalt my phone was telling me I was riding at 50-52kmh. That honestly seemed accurate to me, and keeping control of the board definitely required focus and skill at that speed. It becomes pretty dangerous
The belt noise referenced in the video, and consequent tear of the belts, never surfaced in my SYL-08 and I assume later versions.
They seem to also have changed the remote batteries, as I've easily rode about 70km over 4 days, and it never died. In any case, bringing along a very small phone powerbank ensures you have an emergency plan to go back home if the remote dies.
The board charger is pretty compact and for extra measure I bring it along with me in my pack back.
Finally, if you're a snowboarder and reading this: yes, it works wonders as a summer carving fix.

I’m building a e mountain board. Making the motor mounts has been a little bit of a Challenge. Building from a old mountain board. 2 high power vesc”s and it’s goin to be chain driven. Only running 36v on each motor. But they will be synchronised. I’m using hover board battery’s as my power source. The vesc”s can run at 80volts so it will be less than half it’s power. 3 battery’s running parallel should give me good range. Not finished yet.

Had a board similar like this few years ago. It was awesome in the beginning. Then I had to change motor bearing, when doing that I noticed one of the magnets insideis loose. One of the real axles just broke into dust literally. After a while I found a good deal on new motors and just got 2 new with another motor mounts as mine couldn't be installed after the axle was destroyed. I had to find another truck. And now I am converting this board as an offroad go cart (sort of) as now I have Backfire Ranger X2 and Eovan GTS Carbon pro.
Anyway good cheap board for a beginner

Looked promising at a reasonable price. It just a pity about the quality control. Could end up costing a small fortune replacing the belts due to the motor mounts not strong enough and bending. 👍

You can but i advise against doing that. Your best choice is to adapt yourself to the board's straps/bindings orientation. But if you still want to do changes:
You'd have to unscrew and pry open the electronics housing in order to get access to the screws that hold the rear strap/bindings.
Then you'd have to drill new holes for the new position of the straps.
Ask me how i know this.

  • @gerokatseros
    @gerokatseros 4 ปีที่แล้ว

to get 4000 watts from 36V you need 111 amps, that is 55amps for each motor. The battery i guess in best case is a 4p battery , I think its hard to produce so many amps

    • @bramaibrahim
      @bramaibrahim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

There is a esc inside, that can´t give you the 4000W. But the motors in combination with a vesc and stronger batteries could give you that much power.

  • @dieselphiend
    @dieselphiend 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I can pretty much squeeze 15 miles out of my SYL-08. I only weigh a 150lb's. Anyhow, the factory ESC was bad on my board, and GeekBuying gave me a $100 refund towards the purchase of a new ESC which I bought from Flipsky. I've had my SYL-08 a little over a year, and it's still going strong. My only complaint is the quality of the motor mounts could be much better. They are made out of pressed steel, and you need some fairly decent mechanic skills in order to tighten the belts, as the mounting points are not slotted.

Im 13 and i like your channel and stuff but i have a couple questions
    1. If i am riding on roads how kong will the battery last
    2. On the websight it says 1650w is that per wheel?
    3. Will it do good in the rain?
4.If i get this will it last?
    5. Where can i get replacement parts if something brakes?
    6. Do you think it is fast enough?
Last but not least: can i rough on it?

    • @johnjacobjingleheimerschmidt
      @johnjacobjingleheimerschmidt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm afraid this company would not offer a warranty I wonder too about rain and rough riding it. I'm finding its 1650 total not per wheel. You would most likely get 2 - 2.5 hours of use. Companies always over exaggerate their shit, guess if you weigh 110 your golden but upwards of 150lbs and its slower. Watching some vids on this it looks like the guy is doing 28 mph on flats eventually and 15 mph offroad. You can always use silicone sealant around the battery and electrical to seal out water but they never did say it was resistant to water which means most likely not. I have backfire ranger I'm a fat 200 lbs and 6 foot tall I love my backfire board its water resistant also 2xx the price of this but you get what you pay for sometimes, and if you look on Craig's list you might find a used one for half. I got mine for $500 cash had some minor stuff but I'm technical so can fix stuff. Always do alot of research before you throw down cash cuz when you buy used your buying some one else's problem maybe. Peace

    Cons.:
Also REALE LEISTUNG --> 600W
    -------------------------------------------
    Cons:
-For people under 50kg you can drive it as long as you drive straight ahead. As soon as you go uphill, there is an extreme voltage drop (battery too small) and the remote control indicates that the battery is empty. To avoid this, you have to connect a second battery in parallel.
-The range specification is based on perfect conditions and WITHOUT a load...I didn't manage 15km on level 3 on a perfect straight stretch with 76kg. With level 4 only 11km...
-I think you've made a mistake with the hill-climb properties, there should be 3 degrees instead of 30 degrees. It is by no means a "mountainboard" and it is very cheeky to be able to call it that. With gradients of 10 degrees, the board is already very slow and the 30 degrees only makes it if nobody is on top.
-The charging time is twice as long as specified...but you can also calculate it yourself...10Ah with a 2A charger --> 5-6h charging time. Nothing there with 3h.
-The power is given as 2x1450W. Unfortunately, this is of no use if the ESC can only deliver a maximum of 600W. So REAL PERFORMANCE --> 600W
-The ESC/battery can only provide 2A continuously. This is MUCH too little for a board that is defined as a "mountainboard". At least 50A should be supplied for a mountainboard so that you can still have fun with it off-road.
-The description states that the board has all the protective electronics. But it's just WRONG. It is the cheapest ESC installed which you can get for 50€. This does not have any protective electronics --> Let's assume we drive the board as it is delivered. The ESC is designed for 36V (voltage peaks must not exceed this 36V) but a fully charged 10s battery has 42V. Transient loads lead to voltage peaks when driving away, which can sometimes exceed 50V. You could start with a 20c diode, which is not the case with this ESC.
-If you connect a 12s battery as in the description, the thing just flies in your face...
-I don't even know what to say about the engines. I've never seen anything so cheap. After 10 minutes of driving uphill, one engine had 76°C and the other had 92°C and was already smoking. (76kg rider weight)
    Pros.:
+Cheap (unfortunately you get exactly what you pay for here)
+The speed is the only thing that's about right. But you can't drive it because the pneumatic tires and the cheap trucks make it just too vulnerable and it just becomes dangerous to drive with this setup from a certain speed.
Unfortunately, I had bought 4 of them at the time, for me, my brother and two friends, and we all very much regretted the purchase. One board came with a defective battery (replacement delivery took 2 months), the ESC of one board went up in smoke after 10km (after a very long back and forth and many videos which the manufacturer requested, we also got a replacement here, for the costs as new griptape, thermotape, etc. of course you have to pay for it yourself), the third board managed about 100km on the straight (when it was then driven off-road for the first time, the ESC slipped inside, it was only glued in with thermo-paste Thermo paste got to the pins due to the slipping and so this ESC also said goodbye due to a short circuit). The fourth board is still running. It now has about 500km under its belt, but unfortunately the battery is already so weak that you can still get 10km if you're lucky.
CONCLUSION: If you want a cheap board that you can have fun with for a few days as a beginner until it gives up, it's "GOOD". After that, you can throw in the money and replace a new VESC, battery and motors and you've got something halfway decent...

I guess it is the same manufacturer, just named different! Anyways, there are different versions on the market, or at least upgraded/improved/newer versions! So make sure you get the latest version! Sometimes the pictures at chinese websites arent updated, but they are selling the latest, updated versions!

I'M a seasoned snowboarder and heli-skiier , REALLY NEED TO ADD WEAR A HELMET AND PADS AND WRIST GUARDS. I have a backfire ranger x2 similar to this please wear safety gear just a rock or unseen divot or rogue pedestrian can cause serious injury. Wear protection. This board looks cool and price is half off of competition like the straps but think if they were removable and could be used optionally would be better. Suspension looks cool too.
