I watched this 3 times, went to the fabric store, watched it there twice, came home and watched again, watched as i made the blanket, took a break and rewatched it again, and watched it one last time as i finished the blanket. My blanket turned out perfect* i appreciate all the details you add in when going step by step!!!

I just finished making one with some gorgeous cuddle fabric that was on clearance at Joann's. I did the same thing (watched a couple different times before and during making it) with the same result: a beautiful blanket! Love this method. I've made baby blankets a few different ways but this is by far the best.

As a teacher to adults & have made many flannel baby quilts, I was challenged to try this mitered self bound baby blanket quilt. You are a teacher with talent & teaches with clear, concise words with demo. Thanks so much
Ive been making these for about 4yrs.I give them as gifts, sell them in my shop, but mostly I give 100 a year to local hospitals for new babies. I taught this class for our quilting guild and we ended up giving an additional 100 to hospitals in 2016.Try making these folks, very easy and it's always wonderful to wrap a sweet wee one up and snuggle. I've also used this idea to make larger throws for snuggling I the sofa. Just increase each piece by 10 inches until you get to the size that you want. Thanks for the video, Jennifer. My niece is having her first baby in August. I'm making her a quilted blanket. One side will be a darker blue cotton and the other is a soft wool/acrylic blend in a Scottish tartan. I'm going to use the cotton side to bind the blanket after I quilt it. It is bigger than a receiving blanket, but will be fully machine washable. I am so excitednto stretch my sewing skills with this project!

What a cute idea. I use to give hand crocheted afghans as baby gifts. It's difficult for me to crochet anymore because of my hands. But this project is perfect for me. Thank you for your excellent instructions. ❤

When I need to leave an opening I use a RED flower-headed pin where I need to start sewing and a RED flower-headed pin where I need to STOP sewing. That way I train myself to NEVER sew in between the red-headed pins. I keep the red-headed pins separate on my pin cushion, making them easy to find and preventing me from accidentally placing them with my 'regular' pinning. Hope this helps. Keep these great tutorials coming. I've just started sewing again at the ripe old age of 74 after putting it aside for 40+ years while I had a business career.

There are many organizations and quilting guilds with programs for charity quilts for babies. What a nice donation to an abused women's center where women frequently come with babies. Also hospital NICU units are in need of smaller blankets (you could scale this one down).
Gloria Wojo I'll have to look into that Gloria, thanks. I've been wanting to start a larger quilt but my energy level is not what it used to be. These tiny blankets are the perfect size and quick to put together.
Mom, Grandma--I know exactly how you feel about the energy level since I'm a mom, grandma, and great-grandma. I've just started sewing again after 40+ years. I'm enjoying it, but I am sooooo SLOW; but I'm getting it done. Good luck and keep on sewing. The Clover hand needle threader is one of my best friends. ; o )
I watched someone else's video for this same blanket and attempted to make one this morning. It turned out wrong. I'm not experienced at sewing. The one real rule here on these, is start and stop EXACTLY in that quarter inch mark at the corners.. for both sewing the top and sewing the dog ears. If you are off a stitch or two, it will pucker. Easy enough to do, and they are fun, fast and people love them.

I haven't read all the comments, so forgive me if I'm repeating someone else. Great tutorial, but. . .
I ALWAYS run flannel through a rinse and dry cycle before cutting, because it will shrink about 2" per yard. (And shed a lot of fluffy lint in this first wash.) It will also soften and fluff up, making it feel better for mom and baby. Then when I sew the blanket, I know it won't pucker or shrink in the wash. I've made tons of these blankets - a bundle of a three or four of them is a wonderful new baby gift. Some of my little toddler recipients are still sleeping with their blanket at age two. There are an infinite number of combinations of patterns, dots, stripes and solid colors - it's fun to come up with creative new combos, and you can often match up to nursery decor.
We LOVE making these for new mothers and the bundle of blankets is absolutely perfect. Thank you for sharing your tips and experiences with us! Great video. Love all your videos. A trick i learned by accident was before you turn it if you iron the seam the way you want it to go, it lays perfectly when you sew around the blanket and the binding. Lays right down@ShabbyFabrics

These are such fun gifts to make for any new mom! And so many fabrics to choose from. We definitely like to use high-quality flannel, it's just so cozy and warm. I'm sure every blanket you've made has been lovely.
We were visiting Fossil, Oregon. My daughter is expecting our second grandchild and I wanted to purchase fabric at Fossil Mercantile to include in a baby quilt that I am making. Another woman was looking at fabric and we got to talking about baby receiving blankets. She asked if I had heard of the Missouri receiving blanket; I had not. When I was back home I looked this up and, wow! I am now making them for my daughter and also our niece who is also expecting. Both babies are due in October and, I can't wait to give the girls these receiving blankets. Thank you so much. The video was straightforward, informative and not too long.

I wish I had seen this yesterday! I spent the afternoon making a doll blanket like this, but I folded the fabric over and sewed on top. It didn't look great. Now I think I'll have to make another one for a more professional look. Thanks.

My granddaughter got one of these blankets at her baby shower. It is lovely! It has a really soft fabric for the inside and a cotton , with a large pattern , for the wrap around part. We love it and use it often while caring for our little one. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a straight pin left inside the self binding part. I had to cut a small hole over the pin to remove it. We still love the blanket. In fact, I am about to make us several more for gifts and to use ourselves. I just wanted to warn my fellow quilters to be sure to remove your pins as you come to them . A pin left inside a blanket lining can really hurt anyone who is unlucky enough to sit on it!

Watch your video three or four times went to the material store. Bought some material. Watch it a few more times while I was sewing I stopped paused and watched it throughout, but I did mines a little different but it still came out beautiful. I DID IT!!! Except I used the technique to make a Fall tablerunner. I just adjusted the measurements. Jennifer, you are teaching me so many things that I never thought I could do! It does indeed look a little strange as you are putting it together but I am so glad I stayed with you step by step and.....Wahlah...it came out beautiful!! Thank you so much for sharing your gifts and talents with all of us! So far I have made the pillowcases, the cloth baskets for pins and clips, and the sewing machine organizer. I am just learning to sew, and you are the best teacher. Very detailed and yet you do not say anything that is not important to the outcome. Great teacher.

Been making these several years. As long as the bottom is 10 inches larger, than the top, the dimensions don't matter. I make these, and hate to cut a 40 inch square and waste the extra 3 or 4 inches of the width of fabric. So I simply figure out how big I can cut the larger piece, say 43, then cut the top 33. If you want a larger or smaller border, you can do that too. Example, if you do 40 bottom, 20 top, you get about a 4.25 border, rather than the 2.25 shown here. So, you can go up or down in difference between the top and bottom, it will make the border narrower or larger.

I have watched several tutorials for this type of blanket. Always thought it looked too difficult. With your video I feel like I can make one of these cute blankets with ease. I too am a quilter but we live in a very warm climate and don't have a lot of use for heavy quilts. Have to add this blanket to my list of things to make for my new baby great grandchildren. I made 2 receiving blankets for my great-granddaughter. It was beautiful and my granddaughter absolutely loves them. The mitered corners were PERFECT. I used this same method to make table runners, placemats, and dinner napkins. They also turned great! Adding the stabilizer to the placemats and table runner was a little tricky but I figured out a work around. I really enjoy your videos - your teaching methods are the best.

Thank you for this! I decided to make my blankets with a more narrow binding so I cut the front pieces 37” square and the backing pieces 40” square. The binding ended up just under an inch wide and I think it looks really neat and tidy that way! Your video was really easy to follow. Thanks again!

Hi Jen! I'm new back to sewing after 30 years of life happening...... I LOVE this tutorial! I've never seen anything like it! You are so great at explaining each step. Thank you! I want to do a sofa blanket for my young granddaughter and put batting in it. Would it work to cut the batting the same size as the back fabric so that the borders have batting in them as well? Have wanted to make one of these for ages. Have followed other tutorials, but they never seemed to work.

Have just started my Christmas sewing for the greater good. These have been the easiest receiving blankets I've ever made!!!! Have done 4 and have 6 more to do. Figure I'll be finished today!!
I did make one adjustment though; I found the 1/4" seam allowance a bit small so I'm doing a 1/2" and, so far it's working great.

You can in fact do rectangles the same way. I make big kid blankets in rectangles. You just make the bottom 10 inches bigger than the top. so a 60 x 20 bottom, needs a 50 x 10 top, and so on.

I had a pre-printed baby quilt panel - the kind you buy as a panel as opposed to by the yard. I tried the measurement method as above - adding 10 inches to the bottom piece as the panel measured 32 inches wide by 42 inches long; so I cut the bottom piece 42 by 52 inches. It didn't work out. I did make another blanket a couple of weeks ago using the original 30 x 40 measurements and that came out beautifully, which is why I thought I'd try a rectangle. I'm sad.......

Jennifer... you made this so easy to follow. I did this once with the soft fabric called minky I think it was called and it was so slippery and one corner came out horrible. You made the metered corner easy to understand too. I am going to try this again thanks to you. Also, our quilting group is accepting the receiving blankets now.

Love this tutorial! It’s very informative and detailed with the step by step process. I do have a question though, I want to make something like this for my son to fit on top of a twin size bed. How would I measure the right amount so it is a rectangle rather than a square?
You'll follow the same steps, making sure that your backing is larger than your top, and just follow the sizing for a twin size quilt. - Morgan
How do I make a rectangle blanker?

To make it a rectangle you just cut your front fabric to the your desired length and width and then your backing fabric should be 5” larger around. So yes 10” added to your backing fabric length and width.

Need to make a bunch of these in the next few weeks. Question: How could I sandwich a piece of batting between the front and back? Would I lay the batting on the smaller piece of fabric's wrong side?
Hmmm.... I'm not sure about that as I've never tried it. We made this with a nice thick flannel so perhaps that will be thick enough that you won't need batting? If you decide to add the batting, maybe you can experiment on some inexpensive fabric at first while you're perfecting your technique. Good Luck! Let me know how it turns out :) Jen

I was just wondering if the two pieces stay together well after washing. I know you went all the way around the edge, I was just wondering about the middle of the blanket
They stay together pretty well, but you could do some top quilting to ensure it stays in place. We've been able to just straighten ours back out after washing. - Morgan

I know this is an old video, but I just discovered it. My seventh great grandchild will be here this fall and I just tonight finished the first of these receiving blankets. Kept coming back to watch as I finished steps and it turned out perfectly. Thanks so much for being so clear. All of my dog ears looked wonky so thank you for pointing out it didn't matter. I embroidered the babies name and birth date before making my blanket, following along with your video. It was years since i made one of these blankets and your tutorial was the best and i will refer back to it, when needed. A personalized gift and handmade-I can't wait to give it! I'm with you on the prewashing. I never prewash my fabric before making handbags. I spray my bags with scotchguard. I tell my customers to spray every six months. keeps bags looking new.
Yes, it definitely depends on the fabrics. We think these flannels work so beautifully when not pre-washed :)
