    order a couple extra tool post bolts (center bolt that holds post to carriage) now, it is a difficult size to find. As you move post around you will wear out those threads. A quick change tool post helps a bunch.

    how does this compare to the cuesmith pool lathe

    • @playpool12fyao
      @playpool12fyao  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can’t speak for the cuesmith because I never used one. It looks the same because most of the cue lathe are made from the same manufacturer, Taig Tools and therefore there are really not disadvantages or advantages over each other besides the tapper bar cuesmith comes with. Mid American get the part from Taig and from the looks of it so does Cuesmith. I just bought a mid American because Todd was quick with the reply back. Please let me know What are the 2 dial indicators have you been using?

    • @playpool12fyao
      @playpool12fyao  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The dial indicator I use is from Amazon. I made sure it’s a .0005 vs .001. It makes a big difference especially when facing on the joint of a cue. The other one is a harbor freight and it reads .001. Not precise but for quick non critical task it works. Hope this helps and thank you for commenting.

    Why do you use the other lathe when doing something like a wrap or shaft reconditioning? Just something I noticed in your videos. Thanks for them btw, really enjoy them.

      Thank you and thank you for subscribing. I use my other lathe for finishing cues and shaft maintenance. For finishing cues I use water when sanding and I don’t want to mess up my cue lathe. For shaft maintenance, I have more room underneath the shaft since my old lathe bed is so short. Hope this helps and thank you for commenting.

    The Power supply/ speed control unit should always be turned off with the main Power switch, If you turn the directional switch to the off position and leave the main power switch on then the unit remains under power and over any extended time will cause the unit to fail. Always turn the unit off with the MAIN POWER SWITCH. Thanks you.

    I’m thinking of getting your lathe, I really like the four jaw chuck. Do you know how your lathe compares to the Deluxe Smith lathe. I noticed the Smith lathe has a tapering and inlay machine that attaches to lathe. Which are cheaper than the stand alone models. But I don’t know if there’s any quality difference between the two lathe’s. Any thoughts?

    • @playpool12fyao
      @playpool12fyao  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was going to get a Deluxe Smith Lathe but they never contacted be back. Todd from Mid American replied to me within 24 hrs. I do wish my lathe has a taper bar. Building a butt and doing joint, pin and shaft maintenance to me, both lathe can do it all. The thing that separates the two lathe is the taper bar to make shafts. Wood shafts are the hardest thing to make in my opinion. I had to make my own “taper bar” from aluminum extrusion and works but the taper bar would have been better I think. I still have to sand the shaft down. Now I’m planning to just get a cnc machine to make points, shaft tapers and inlays. If you have the room or if you are seriously thinking on making cues with the shaft, get a lathe that can fit a butt so you can do joint and pin work and get a cnc for shafts and lays. If you just want a lathe that will do it all, even I have the Mid American Lathe, I would get the Deluxe just because of the shaft taper bar. Also the four jaw is like the three. The 4 jaw is not independent like a real metal lathe four jaw meaning each jaw can be closed to get perfect concentric. Thank you for commenting, please subscribe if haven’t already and hope this helps.

    Would you recommend the large bore lathe or the regular one. I was looking at getting into making cues. Something to do when i retire. I have two lathes already. A Rikon 70-105 which is too short unless i buy the extention. I also have a mini metal lathe.

      No I have not. I would contact Todd. The power supply might be faulty. I know the power supply is not a clean converter because when I use it, my speakers are picking up the on and off and I can hear the power supply through my speakers. I also plug the power supply through a surge protector. Hope this helps and please share.

    12FYAO, how much did you pay for this particular model? Bad thing about Mid America is, they don't post their price online. so, I had to purchase Cue Smith Mid Size model. However, Mid Size model doesn't come with a steady rest with deluxe chuck unlike this.

    • @playpool12fyao
      @playpool12fyao  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mid American does post their prices. It is in the paragraph description $1325.00 + S&H. I too was debating to get a Hightower lathe or a Mid American lathe. I am glad I went with Mid American. For what I got, the quality and price is much better with Mid American. Do I really need a dvd to make cues. TH-cam has the videos. Also do I really need cleaners and cue waxes. Cue Component sells them cheaper. Sorry to hear that you had to get Hightower’s lathe. When I contacted both sellers, Hightower asked for information that I did not state but nowhere on is contact page states I should have places that information on the email. His email reply was, I was incorrect. On Hightower’s contact page, nowhere does it state to place zip code, but yet on his email reply you, the consumers, forget to add your zip code. I should have read Hightower’s mind. Also Hightower never answered his phone during his posted hours and never called back. Not the customer service I need. Hopefully you got better service. Todd from Mid American was and is more willing to work with. Thank you for commenting and please share.

      Dave Murrell I totally agree for the price, what you get and what it can do. For me building a cue, I am first trying to master concentricity. The lathe is accurate but I know I’m not super centered with the tail stock. I am getting a little lip, doing joint work, when mating the shaft and butt of the cue. I did the two dead centers with a blade making sure the blade between the points is horizontal. I think it’s my drills wondering. I ordered the Edge Technology tail stock alignment tool and carbide drills. Once I master concentricity, I will slowly try to build a cue. Thank you for commenting.
