Hi I am a complete newbie to towing a caravan. Have just bought an 18’ pop top. I had now idea there was such a thing as a breaksafe. What is it for and what does it do? Thank you for all your videos they are excellent and very helpful for me. 😊🎉

      Thanks for the feedback.
Any trailer/ caravan that is over 2,000kg by law has to have a ‘break safe’ system.

I have always hooked mine in the same hole as the D shackle. An Eddie once told me that was wrong and it cannot be on the towbar (in case it fell off). It had to be attached to the chassis. 😀Good to know I was right. Thanks.

The Eddie at the place I purchased my van from told me the same when I connected it to the towbar. Them he hooked it to the bottom lip of the plastic bumper bar! I didn’t like that so found a spot on the chassis but it is a pain to hook up. I will take Steve’s advice in the future.

Where are you getting your information from about what is legal? Any links to regulations? Everything I’ve read says it should be attached to the chassis and not to any part of the tow bar.

Road authority of Australia, thanks George

Got a link to the regulations? Can’t even see that “Road authority of Australia” exists. What is that? Just a link to back up your information would be great. Thanks 🙏

Only Aussie rules. In NZ; Between 2500-3500kgs (most caravans being towed ) breakaway with certified brakes, but no safety chains are required. So plenty of attachment points.

Wow! no safety chains, that sounds a little different.

My understanding was that the Breakaway cable cannot be attached to any part of the towbar/hitch, primarily because the purpose of the Breakaway system is to apply the caravan brakes in the event of a catastrophic failure of some or any part of the towbar/hitch! Obviously if cable is connected to the towbar and the towbar then detaches from the car…..the Breakaway system is not going to activate!

Thanks Mick, here is the standard comment / stipulation made by all manufacturers of break-safe devices.
"Attach the Break-Away cable to the rear of the tow vehicle using a secure anchor point.
Do not hook cable to tow ball or safety chain anchor."

@@adelaiderv - Safety Chain Anchor point, would that not be a part of the Towbar?
