  • In this video Dave replaces the caravans breakaway cable, a job he has never done before. It's an important job because it's a legal requirement to have these cables fitted to your caravan and from a health & safety perspective they can actually save your caravan and reduce the risk of a serious accident should the caravan become unhitched from the car.

    That’s a top tip there Dave about carrying a spare cable 👍. I always carry a small selection of tools, all I need now is a spare cable. Thanks for demonstrating 🛠 Cheers Rob

    Great tip Dave thanks. I like the idea of the split ring connection, having not seen these before.

    Hi Dave and Helen. Really useful vlog. We always carry a spare breakaway cable, but never had to use it, so appreciate the advice on fitting etc. Many thanks. George and Trish. 😊

      Hello George & Trish, It was an eye opener to us to be honest because until I researched the content, it hadn’t occurred to us to carry a spare. Dave has found one that’s even easier to fit now! As always, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Cheers Dave & Helen 👍

    Thanks for the video tips Dave. I've seen Dan's vlog too, but yours reminded me. I've ordered a couple off Amazon, although our 'van was serviced end of last year - I did think I might replace the cable.

    Had to replace ours a few years ago after unhitching on a steep slop at Tregarton Park. Snapped the cable, but done its job, so I would like to say when unhitching always leave the breakaway cable to last

    You should have caught that ring with a pair of pliers, would have been easier than hammering, a little cordless grinder would have saved some sweat too cutting the old one off, well done though.

    Thanks for the video. We have just fitted a new cable (with the split ring). However, my husband tried applying the handbrake by pulling hard on the cable as we have seen in another video, but he says it is impossible to do. It is much too stiff. Is there a way of adjusting this as we are concerned that the handbrake will not be applied when the cable is taught if the caravan becomes detached from the car.

    • @HelenandDave
      @HelenandDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. I think it would be quite hard to apply the handbrake by pulling the cable by hand. If you can apply the brake using the leaver ok then it should be fine. If however the brake is stiff anyway then it may need to be greased. Mine is checked at the annual service (which was this week) and it’s fine. ATB Dave & Helen 👍

    Carry 2 inside you accidentally forget to remove your breakaway cable when unhitching.

    I'm wondering if you do need a spare, the caravan is going to come to a reasonably sudden stop with no brake lights as a warning, so any following vehicles will hit the caravan and therefore will only move again on the back of a lorry!

    • @HelenandDave
      @HelenandDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      🤣🤣 That's a distinct possibility John
