    I'd say Oscar throws a whole body instead of just a key because Hollows wouldn't have the brain power to search the body for the key to their cell, thus filtering out 'sane' Undead that could fulfill the prophecy from insane Hollows.
    It's kind of stupid, but most exaplanations for most stuff in the game is pretty stupid too

      He just throws a body because that's how you get loot in DS1. It's just a container and it's practical for the developers and teach the player that bodies=loot.

    • @paulj6805
      @paulj6805 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah, he throws the body because that's how the mechanics of the world operate. There are no "loose" items to be thrown. Everything is connected to the soul. Oscar throws a whole corpse down because he literally could not throw a single item on its own, it would be inconsistent with the rules of the world.

      Same here, but then again one of the prerequisites to hollowing is basically just giving up, giving away your only tool of survival is certainly giving up and it seems oscar had given up by this point, the real question is, why dont we just loot an estus flask off of one of the scores of undead we kill? They can be seen using their own estus flasks.

    He throws a corpse because in Dark Souls land all items have to be attached to a corpse or in a chest. I know it sounds like I'm joking, but this really is why. It's meant to be a mechanical tutorial.
    This is undercut/confused by the fact that players can drop items and a little sack appears. Seems like the narrative/gameplay team and inventory UX designers failed to communicate on that one, or they didn't realize until too late in development and just decided to run with what they had, or something else in that vein.
    This kind of thing happens alot in game development.

    • @gojifan4001

    • @N0TYALC
      @N0TYALC ปีที่แล้ว

      There are plenty of items that can be found lying there without a body nearby. This theory is obviously untrue, but it would be quite dumb if it were.

    • @wimbusbert1249
      @wimbusbert1249 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@N0TYALC There are very, very seldom items found without a body, to the point where it is clearly a design choice. Like, name 10 items not attached to bodies or in chests.
      You're right, it is dumb. The truth behind most things in life often are. In fact, Dark Souls, while brilliant in countless ways, is chalk full of dumbass design choices: Pinwheel. Your weapon clanging off the wall. Invisible bridges. Enemy mobs keeping agro during boss fights and swarming you after the fog wall clears. Resonance circles. The entire Gravelord Servant covenant. The list goes on.
      The game is riddled with absolutely deranged design decisions. When you put it into perspective, the first in-game cinematic being a mechanical tutorial is downright sane.

  • @Greywander87
    @Greywander87 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I feel like Oscar is actually the player. Specifically, he is those players who fail to defeat the Asylum Demon. Oscar ends up at the Undead Asylum, somehow gets free, and drops a key to the "next" player in line, then gets wrecked by the Asylum Demon. He passes on his mission and estus flask to that "next" player, who then repeats the cycle until someone finally escapes the asylum. It's kind of like how the only way your character canonically goes hollow is when you stop playing the game. A lot of other NPCs can also be thought of as other "players" in a similar boat to the Chosen Undead. Many of them can be summoned for boss fights, and later found as a corpse with their gear, signifying when they went hollow and gave up.

    I think "Evil Oscar" actually was just "Foil" Oscar; as in, YOUR foil. Depending on what path you choose (which serpent you speak to), Oscar would pick the opposite one. So while, yes, he would use you and try to usurp you, he would choose to either link the flame or usher in the age of dark based upon the opposite of what you chose. He was always meant to be your rival. We ended up getting Siegmeyer, our beloved Onion Knight, to drag around behind us, following our trail, completely free of any rivalry.

  • @MechaBorne
    @MechaBorne ปีที่แล้ว +3

    No no no, Oscar is a genius.
    He knows he can’t complete his quest before the end of the world so instead he finds someone who can and turns himself hollow so he’s immortal and doesn’t have to do any of the work.

  • @jasoniusthegreat5584
    @jasoniusthegreat5584 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    My headcanon is that he was trying to find help for his quest. Given how barren the world is it would be pretty hard to find anyone that isn’t a hostile hollow, or on a separate quest of their own, so that’s why he aimed for the Asylum, because everyone there isn’t on a quest, nor are they hostile, so it would be easier to find an undead and possibly give them a new purpose by freeing them, allowing him to find a new ally, but on his way to meet back up he tripped and took a very nasty fall and met his fate.

    I always assumed Asylum Demon beat him into the hole and the man was messed up mentally by the fact a knight lost to such a crap boss that he decided to give up. The joke part aside, asylum demon is on the roof befire he jumps down, you can actually see him up there if you open the door and look up a bit. So I guessed Oscar while focusing on his hiring process of shoving keys into bodies didnt notice our bodacious bloated basher sneak up on him, got clapped harder then solaire vs a random glowie boy, and kind of gave up realizing he just wasnt good enough to complete the family passed peer pressure. Heck, he was even wring about how hard his task was as the crestfallen warrior dude points out, it wasnt even as easy as just ringing 1 said bell and it just being done... and he couldn't even do that right

    • @rickytebbe
      @rickytebbe  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't think he was going to be a recurring mini boss, like the Pursuer.
      I think he was closer to the Onion Knight, but slower. He would show up peacefully at places like the bells after you already rang them or other obstacles after you cleared them. But, he was also supposed to show up after you beat Gwyn and to try to kill you and attempt to do the opposite ending you were going for.

    Following your narrative, we probbaly start the game, seeing Oscar at the stage of "What and why TF am I doing this, again?"

    So..., Option 2
    What Oscar is or why he does it is really up to you, the player, that's why his content was cut, and as to why he is throwing undead with the key in your cell, that's because he is hiding the key in them, sort of like hiding the key in a delivery cake, would it be easier just throwing the key?
