Review: Noodler's Bulletproof Black Ink (Waterproof)

- Noodlers Black Ink is what I normally use in my fountain pens. It's waterproof and safe for use with watercolour. However, performance really depends on the type of pen and paper you use it with.

Thanks for the review.
Regarding blackness , I experienced the same thing , ie, not superblack as I wished and I was about to abandon this ink to look for an alternative. But I read a thread on FPN in which one user suggested giving the bottle a good shake before filling your pen with it. I followed that suggestion and it worked. It's as black as can be. Now I always have a pen filled with this ink.
Try it :-)
Thanks. I should try that too
Hi Teoh, You might find that the Strathmore paper is sized with something like gelatine in the manufacturing process. My understanding is that Noodler's bullet proof inks chemically combine with the cellulose fibres of the paper to achieve permanence. The use of size during the manufacture of the paper means that the size is present throughout the body of the paper & would tend to mask the paper's cellulose fibres from the action of the ink. I recall reading something about gelatine sized water-colour papers resisting the 'bullet-proof' inks on Noodler's website. I am experimenting with a rice based size on cotton rag-stock. It involves boiling the living daylights out of some short-grain rice (I like Arborio) for a couple of hours, straining the result & then applying it to the paper. I apply the size hot to preshrink the paper - printing & register. This should, in theory, give a cellulose based size which works with the bullet-proof inks. There is a downside; I use about 3 coats per side to completely seal the paper for use with oil based media. However, this removes much of the paper's absorbency which would not be good for water-colours. You could try a single, very thin coat to mask the gelatine... Or avoid papers that use gelatine or acrylic based sizes in their manufacture. Hopefully there might be some papers that are manufactured with starch (cellulose) based sizing. Unfortunately manufacturers tend to boast about their "mould cast, pure cotton, sized & deckle edged" papers. They rarely tell us the things that we really need to know: Which materials they use for the size! :-( ciao, frank.
Thanks for so much useful information. So far, I only have problem with the Strathmore 400 series watercolour journal. The other sketchbooks seem unaffected by the problem I showed in the video.
Strathmore use plant-based and synthetic sizing. All papers are vegan except Gemini watercolour paper.
I love this ink, hair dryer gives you quick drying.
But without hair dryer it's slow drying. lol
@@teohyc 8 seconds isnt bad
Nice video! I personally use this noodler's ink with a lamy safari (extra fine nib), mostly on moleskine watercolor paper. When I sketch outside I almost immediately put washes on the ink drawing and it doesn't seem to smudge at all. The only time I had problem with this ink and watercolors was when I was using a broader nib size (lamy f) and a fabriano sketchbook with 110 gsm paper. If the strokes are wetter they take a very long time to dry.
Great review. The only thing I see wrong with this ink is the drying time . If your out on location completing the drawing and laying down the Watercolour wash while on location is more convenient. Some artist have reported 24 hr drying time before using Watercolour. I take your point about sketch books reacting differently with the ink hence a shorter drying time. For the mean time I will stick to dip pens as the ink seems to dry a lot quicker. Thanks for your excellent work on TH-cam very informative channel.
+Pure Watercolour Patrick Ley-Greaves This is definitely a weird ink. 😂
Are there any alternatives or is Noodlers all there is for fountain pens?
You can check out Sailor KiwaGuro or De Atramentis Document inks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Platinum Carbon Black may be another alternative as well.
Unless you get a hold of the Noodler's Boston Safety Pen which will take India ink.
I use Speedball Super Black India ink in my Safety Pen....have had NO issues what-so-ever.
Just my 2 cents.
Keep up the great work Teoh.
Wouldnt it not matter what so ever what kind of pen is used, if the same ink is used it'll still take the same amount of time to dry.
I had the same issue with the ink appearing grey. It seems to improve a lot if you mildly shake the ink bottle before filling your pen.
I found that Noodlers X-feather is a very true black and it dries rather quickly(10-15 sec). I believe its Bulletproof & Waterproof. As a southpaw, thats the mane reason I use it everyday when writing but I recently tried it w/ my line art and then I added some sharpies for color and the only color that smudged at all was the yellow. I havent used the X-Feather on watercolor paper, though. Just Rhodia & Clairefontaine. So, it might be worth a try.
Thanks for the info. I've not heard of that colour from Noodlers before \ (•◡•) /
Hi Teoh! As always a great video with helpful info!
I'd say, if someone else hasn't, to carry a piece of blotting paper to leave between your drawings, to make sure you have no smearing. That said, you could 'tidy up' your smudged drawing with a few clouds or a wash in the sky, indicating clouds. Nice drawing that shouldn't go to waste!
Thanks for this! I was going to buy this one, but knowing that it dries so slowly, I will not get it.
Would not seem to dry in my small Perfect Sketchbook with Sauder's Waterford paper or on Arches (any type). Even days later the ink dissolves noticeably with water. I wonder if it has something to do with the amount of sizing in the paper? As you said, once its been wet one time then it stays permanent.
+The Mind of Watercolor Yeah, it could be the size used on the paper. I did not have problem with using the ink on my small Perfect Sketchbook though, maybe because it's hot here in Singapore and it dries more completely.
4:30 From my experience, Noodler's doesn't combine well with any of Strathmore's papers. I have inked drawings from months ago that will still smudge today if I take my finger to it.
Those will need fixative to protect
Great review! I use Platinum Carbon, problematic for some users as it takes 'a level' of diligence with pen hygiene, however I'm always on the hunt for alternatives. Thanks
You might try Noodler's Heart of Darkness too. Not bulletproof, but waterproof I think. It might dry faster, depending on the paper you're using. Heart of Darkness is also blacker as I recall. Lexington Gray is also great for drawing.
+Rori Rants Thanks. I've heard good things about Lexington Gray too. But I really need to finish all the bottles I currently have before getting new ones.
HAHAHA! I've never heard anyone say that ;) Write on.
I just bought some beautiful acrylic fountain pens. (The Noodler Konrad and Neponset.)
Q #1) Will this Bullet Proof ink harm my $70 dollar pens? I just to make sure that this ink is compatible with my pens.
Q #2) Is this ink considered a "dry" ink? If it is...will it clog my pen after a period of "non-use"?
Thanks Teoh. I truly admire your knowledge & talent!
+Sylvia Catalano Noodler's ink is safe for fountain pens. They don't clog pens. They are actually 97% water-based and when dry, they don't dry with crusts around the bottle.
Teoh, how long do you usually use a product before you review it? Your reviews are always incredibly informative and covers a wide breadth of topics.
+April Marshall I would use them thoroughly before I put out any reviews. All the reviews so far are of products that I've used for months. E.g. I only review sketchbooks after I fill up the sketchbook and that takes months because I'm slow.
i love how you do the reviews.....u jus manage to clear all the doubts i have about a certain things!! :) :)
Noodler's Heart of Darkness: MUCH MUCH darker, very slightly less waterproof at least on Strathmore and Arches watercolor papers ( though I admit my impatience in drying time before my initial tests may have affected the outcome)
I thought HoD was waterproof but I have recently found out it still smudges with water. It's water resistant at best. I hope Noodler's Black is better.
Besides the ink that comes in cartidges, Noodler's Bulletproof Black is the only fountain pen ink I have ever used. I bought it because of the nice price and large amount you get. I find that on the global art materials sketchbook and canson papers, if you have a pencil sketch underneath, even when the ink is dry, erasing can really fade the ink lines. I like to use it in my brush pen and with brushes for ink washes. Some people say it could be harmful to the brush pen, but I don't notice anything. I like how smoothly it flows out of the brush pen. Do you need separate brushes for ink and ink washes? I've been using a single brush for ink and was wondering if it was okay or not okay to use the same brush for ink that you do for watercolor. (Sorry for so many questions lately. Lol)
Thanks for the video!
+Rebecca Nelson As long as you wash the brush after each use, it should be alright for use with ink or watercolour.
Thank you for such good review!! I think I will get one.
Excellent video, very concise.
Is there a black waterproof ink that you would recommend over Noodler’s. And which Pen is best for the said inks.
Thanks for the review.
hi teoh, i just want to know can i use this waterproof ink in my "pentel pocket brush pen"..?? As i learned from your video that not to use pigmented waterproof ink..
I use this ink on a daily basis doing notes for work in my log book.. It is my favorite in that I love the deep black and it's permanence. With the note book I'm using it's ok, but a regular stenographer pad the ink bleeds though, but it does with my Lamy Blue or my iroshizuku Shin-Kai ink, I think it's just the wrong paper to use with fountain pens. Thank you for your thoughts regarding Noodler's Bulletproof Black ink, I got it first because of the price, i now use it because I like it as my favorite black ink.
Because of the length of drying this ink would be excellent for pen & wash drawing!!
+David Amos It actually is not a quick drawing ink. But since I use outdoors mostly, it can dry fast with help of the sun.
I was just searching informations about this ink, very usefull video! Thank you
+zucozampa Thanks!
Thank you for this review. I've had some interest in this ink. If I were to get "boring" black, I'd probably get this one. :)
Thanks :-)
Try sailor kiwa-guro ink, it's pigment based so it's fully waterproof, it also has quite interesting color :)
Its not fully waterproof, its less waterproof than platinum carbon black. Depends on a lot of things and is also good performer and very dark though not perfectly waterproof.
Noodlers black ink vs heart of darkness, which wins?
Not black enough and not really waterproof. Try DeAtramentis Document Black. 100% waterproof, DENSE BLACK, for fountain pens. You can leave it in the pen for about two weeks then you should flush it with ammonia and water. I left some in a fountain pen until it completely dried out. Some Simple Green and an ultrasonci cleaner and it clean all of it out, brand new pen again.
I will be using it on tracing paper, hopefully will be dark as expected
Hi teoh! Great video!... Is this ink markerproof(copic)?
Good!! But is it marker/copic proof?
Hello Teoh, how many hours do you recommend letting the ink dry before applying watercolor washes? Thanks, great video.
+Smbat B. It depends on the paper you are using too. On some paper, the ink will bond quickly and you can use watercolour right after. On some other paper, it will take much longer. For example, on Strathmore 400 series watercolor journal, the ink may look dry but is never truly dry.
Thanks a lot for your quick reply, do you have a particular preference with which paper to use it?
I don't have any preference. I just use whatever I happen to be using or reviewing. I don't stay with particular brands because I like to test different options.
Hello, I got myself a noodler's bulletproof ink (x feather black) to use with watercolours. It does not seem to be waterproof, and I have tried giving it at least 2 hours to dry out before applying watercolours but the ink bled out immediately. Anyone had such problems?
I love your drawings
Thanks. :-)
Thank you!
Good video, very informative. Thank you!
Hi. I always enjoy your videos. I was wondering if you have ever tried Faber Castell Carbon Black ink. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
+Maria Castillo I've not tried the Faber Castell ink before. These are the inks I've tried www.parkablogs.com/index.php?q=picture/comparison-of-different-black-inks
Thank you for your review! I am wondering what happens to the fountain pen if you let the ink in there for too long. (Not that this should ever happen. haha) I want to try this ink, but I don't want to ruin my beloved Lamy. ;)
+Sanguinik It depends on the ink. If it's pigmented ink, the ink will dry into crust. You can actually try. Just put a drop of ink out on some surface, e.g. glass, and let it dry overnight.
I am working on my first ever painting...it's a "splash" type, an idea I got from you. Now that the first layer is dry, I find I need/want a waterbrush with waterproof lack ink in it to put in some details (especially eyes, but other lines as well). Do you think this ink would work with the Pental Aquash waterbrushes (I really need a fairly thick to thin line)? And because it can't be said too often, I so appreciate your reviews and sketches.
You should practice on a scrap piece of paper with whatever tools you have first. Note that when you apply ink onto watercolour, you will get a thicker line than usual.
Thanks! I don't have much, but I will take your advice and do that later today. Sorrry about all the questions.
awesome ink, thanks
What nib do you have on that pelikan? The 200/205 doesnt come with gold nib. Curious if its an aftermarket upgrade. Good line variation with that nib!!
It’s a Fine nib. I can’t remember much about it since it was bought so long ago. But it’s not a gold nib
@@teohyc thanks.
Just looked it up. 200 has gold colored accents and gold looking nib but still steel.
Great video!!
@3:08...you say one disadvantage is that it takes a long time for this waterproof ink to dry. Can you give a rough estimate? How long would one have to wait for ink to dry in order to start watercolor painting over the ink?
+Sylvia Catalano How fast the ink dries will depend on the paper you use and the climate. So it's difficult to give an exact timing. For me, I would wait for a few minutes before I add watercolour just to make sure the ink does not smudge.
thanks, Teoh. :)
How long do you need to leave it to dry? I have Noodler's Heart Of Darkness which is also meant to be waterproof but it smudges even if I leave it a while to dry. I rub my finger over it to test it and it didn't smudge... until I added water.
+theartyone I have not used Heart of Darkness before so I cannot say much. It could be the paper also. Test with other paper and see if the ink is really waterproof. Some inks are water resistant but not totally waterproof.
From what I've read. Noodler's bulletproof ink works better and smears less on super absorbant paper. dollar store notebooks, or hell, even just straight up wood.
Hi Teoh ! It is me , I have a question. This black ink is PH neutral and can this be used to write on Photos printed on fine art Museum archival quality papers. I am looking for an ink for this purpose. If this fits it is great. Thanks a lot.
+Cyril Jayant Not sure about the PH value. I don’t read about that in inks. Maybe you can research their website. Or check out De Atramentis ink as well.
Hello my noodlers ink bleeds on my sketchbooks when i use watercolor on it. What paper do you use please ? And tank you for your video.
+Béatrice Wauters That ink dries very slowly
Thank you... it doesn't dries on my sketchbook. more than 1 week now. But it's ok on some papers made with cellulose.
hi!! Teoh!! i want to know if that ink can be use in a dip pen and on water color brushes also?or its only for fountain pen? and why ??
You can use that with dip pens and watercolour brushes. If it is safe for use in fountain pens, it is safe for use with other tools
+Teoh Yi Chie thanks for the answer !!!good videos all the time!!
hello...would you know why my noodlers bulletproof black ink isn't completely dry after about 2-3 hours of sitting? I'm using strathmore 500 series mixed media art journal paper.
+Artseytips That's strange because I'm using the same ink with the same paper and somehow it works alright with mine. Maybe the air is too humid at your place? Does the ink smudge after 2-3 hour?
+Teoh Yi Chie I live in the east coast USA and it's winter
+Teoh Yi Chie and yes, it does smudge. I got it off Amazon so I'm wondering if the seller was 100% honest. But, other people who got the same ink says it is very waterproof and that it dries in no time! Also, I got the paper because of your review!
Can you recommend an dry ink not least bleed and waterproof ? It would be great if brown color.
You can try the document inks from De Atramentis. There are many colours and they are waterproof, supposedly safe for fountain pen use.
Teoh Yi Chie
Thank you for your answer.
Sorry for my error typo, I'm looking for the least bleed ink, dry one. I like the sharp fine line. Is the atramentis document still the choice.
Duangjai Rak Yes, you can try De Atramentis.
Hi Teoh, which brand is the pen you use in the video.
That's a Pelikan M200 www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-pelikan-m200-fountain-pen
Very very nice review way better than the others. The guy that voted dislike is probably a hater.
+Vitriol Barbitol Thanks. I'm not bothered by Dislikes. :-) As long as people find the review helpful and accurate, that's good for me.
Dear, Is it (water proof one) pigment free??? Or, will you kindly recommend an ink which is waterproof but pigment free for LAMY SAFARI fountain pen????? 🙂
Can you use it for tattoos?🤣
Probably not
I gave myself a tattoo with India ink when I was 14. Im 23... its still very much there its the only ink "safe " enough...i used a needle and my hand uh yeah I dont recommend it they aren't pretty on anybody just save money when you're older
