      Stephen Drummer Townsend was a genius, one of the most famous use of synthesizer.
      I would say Elton John’s Bennie and the Jets can be recognized from the very first Chord of the piano.

      hard process and the films rolls/camera need to be very specific for possible remaster. I dont think many gig videos were recorded with movie film cameras.

      Most video recordings in the eighties were made onto magnetic tape. The quality of those is not the best. However, with footage done on film like this, you don't need remastering, just a good copy and scanning it in 4K. That's it.

    I love how the 3 of them are all theatrical to the 9s and then you get a brief shot of entwhistle, stock still, but then you notice his fingers are playing just as frantically as the rest of them. Truly the eye of a musical hurricane

    Small factoid: The microphones they are using (Shure SM58 for the lead singer and Shure SM57 for guitarist) have now been the industry standard for over five decades and are still being manufactured basically unchanged since their release in 1965/1966. Just goes to show that a good product does not need to change just for the sake of it being on the market for a long time.

      All rock and roll roads led to the Tarrant County Convention Center in Ft Worth Texas. I saw so many great bands in the 1970s. The Who included. Phenomenal performance.

      About Moon... so many other drummers say he couldn't keep time... rubbish. Entwistle's bass was really playing lead guitar. The guy was a phenomenal musician. Found Daltrey's posturing a bit much but what a lead man. True group... they all contributed. Play in a band (altho nearly 70!) as part time drummer not sure if that applies. V difficult with all the egos. Also, everyone knows how to drum better than you do.

    Here we have four extraordinary eccentrics in a single rock band. To look at Roger and Pete, but especially John and Keith, the passing of time and of life itself seems to me unbearably tragic. This is a precious record of people and for people. It's perfect.

    The irony of Townshend spending hours and hours in his home studio experimenting with synths and sounds and 24 tape tracks to get the instrumentation just right according to his rarefied artistic vision… and then Daltrey just coming out and KILLING IT live on a simple fucking harmonica

      Indeed. I was there in Golden Hall in San Diego during The Who's "Tommy Tour" on June 13, 1970. The four of them came bouncing onto the stage wearing white jumpsuits, and proceeded to play the entire "Tommy" album non-stop from start to finish. (At least it seemed that way to me; the link below says a few songs were omitted.) I adored the Tommy album, and had not expected such a treat.

      It's funny that, although they didn't always get along well, and Roger was prone to wanting to fist fight / brawl with Pete on at last one occasion, they combined talents well enough to generate some of the most epic and brilliant rock music ever created.

      I think you are mixing up the details a bit. They played the Kilburn show in December 1977. They last played in October 1976 before that. It was the Kilburn show he was unhappy with. John wad drunk, Keith had in Peter own words forgotten how to play drums. And Roger forgot some words.

      It was shot to film in a theater-style room at Shepperton Studios - done for the documentary The Kids Are Alright. Looked great on the big screen when I first saw the film in 1979; the remaster looks better.

      When something is shot on film but on good film with a great fine grain it can be scanned and digitalized with a higher quality and detail which is easily transferable to 4K

      Yeah, when Entwistle is looking kinda of content he is having a good time. It's pretty easy to spot when he isn't having a good time. I saw this line up live in '77. It changed me.

      Agree I’m 63 and was a little young when this first came out but by the mid 70s we were gathering at field parties and loving the Who.

    I never noticed Townsend's jacket in this before-

      I think it's actually the film reel that was used back then is really good quality, only problem was the tvs were not powerful enough to show it, good quality film reels fron the 60s/70s cleaned up are actually the equivalent of a 40k-100k clear picture(we are currently at 4k digitally). Source - the moon landings movie that cane out in the summer Q&A with director on picture quality.

    I saw them the first time live when I was 13 years old in Germany. On TV. That´s when I changed my life. Now I´m 57 years young and I still love this music!

    At this point it’s tough to argue that any member of The Who is “under-appreciated,” but Roger Daltry is a true powerhouse singer who would been the star of any other band.

      Roger almost got kicked out of The Who for being a bully. He would fight with the other members to get his own way. When threatened about being kicked out, he mellowed - an awful lot, so he could stay.

      I was just thinking that watching this. Moon is undeniably one of the absolute best drummers of all-time. Entwistle is undeniably one of the absolute best bassists of all-time. Townshend is undeniably one of the best songwriters of all-time. So Daltry has to be considered the least talented of the 4.
      But man, is he freaking good. This band is just a pure powerhouse, from top to bottom.
