    Getting into Van Der Graaf Generator takes time, but once you're hooked you will never stop listening to them. Scorched Earth, Killer, House With no Door, Wondering, My Room (Waiting For Wonderland), Meurglys III (The Songwriter's Guild), Pilgrims, Refugees and Hammill's solo material like Forsaken Gardens are just sublime, incredibly beautiful and atmospheric. Hammill's voice works more often than not. The other guys might not be so flashy, but their playing is certainly tasteful. Definitely in my top 10 bands of all time. Pawn Hearts may not be the most musical or melodic VDGG album, but it's very much appreciated. You need to have a mega brain and very strong vision to come up with something like Plague of the Lighthouse Keepers, or Man-Erg.

    • @ericporter344
      @ericporter344 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for watching and your comments.
      I've tried with VDGG (H to He, Still Life, Pawn Hearts) and none of them connected with me on any level, and I really dislike Hammill's vocals.
      It's been said on SOT many times...we all hear things differently.
      That's the beauty of this episode, it was fun, at times surprising, but honest opinions. I didn't agree with everyone's picks, but it intrigued me when an album was mentioned that I like. I respect these guys, and can relate.

      I have always found it amazing when grown men can't accept others opinions. Nothing wrong with being surprised when someone dislikes something universally enjoyed but the " youre' wrong " " you're taste sucks " comments just show a level of immaturity that doesn't make sense to me hearing it from adults. Luckily I didn't see that in this episode. I found it really enjoyable. We all have different opinions and it really should be celebrated. It just gets boring to me when everyone likes the exact same thing.

    Gentlemen - Epic episode! Some might not enjoy a review of what you don't like rather than what you do like but, at least to me, it provides additional insight to the views and opinions of people whose opinions you do generally trust and follow. Special kudos to Luis for participating from the hospital and more special kudos to George for adding a level of the unexpected to this great episode. Luis was right when he said "This is perfect" after George made his first pick. Most importantly, it emphasizes the SoT mantra "We all hear things differently." Perhaps the best - or maybe the worst - result of the episode for me is it created a new commitment to track down and re-listen to some of the albums that could not be tolerated when bought upon release to see if I still have the same reaction. First on the list is the 1969 eponymous album by the group named The Flock. We'll see what happens from there. But again - special thanks to Luis, George, Ken, Eric, Steven, and Pete for such a highly entertaining and, in its own way, educational show. Great fun!

    Although I disagree with a few picks (The Final Cut being a big one) this is surely one of the most entertaining vids the team has done. Odd because I don't like "snarkyness" but really this isn't that. Much more about individual taste and I find that fascinating. That and George's total fearlessness in the face of an impending avalance of "WTF dude?" responses. Go team...

    @fredhaier5526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I think George had it right in picking from the canon of what Progressive Rock is known to be. Weak albums by great artists should not surprise anyone. For me, ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. I don't need to hear anymore. I owned vinyl and then the c.d. but I got rid of both copies. I like Tarkus and Trilogy better. By the way "Pirates" from Works Vol. 1 sounds like a Broadway show tune mixed with rock music. I do like parts of it. I'm not a fan of Genesis' "Foxtrot." It takes too long for Watcher of the Skies to get going.
    Sure Supper's Ready is on there, but the version of Seconds Out is just as good. I agree about Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut." I'm not a fan of Atom Heart Mother-side 1. There is a live version on Cre/ation without the orchestra and chorus that is actually better.

    Very disappointed to hear "We Can't Dance" being nominated. For me the Genesis "stinker" was "Invisible Touch". The title track is the cheesiest ever, "Tonight Tonight Tonight" is quite long but is very repetitive and goes nowhere. There are the usual array of Phil Collins type ballads. "Domino" is passable but not a patch on "Home By The Sea" for me. I regard WCD as something of a return to form for the band. True, it isn't a patch on the 1970s Genesis albums and it is way too long with quite a lot of filler. But the following would have made a very decent post 1970s album:
    No Son Of Mine
    Driving The Last Spike
    Dreaming While You Sleep
    On The Shoreline (an outtake from the sessions)
    Living Forever
    Way Of The World (awful lyrics not withstanding)
    Fading Lights

    Back in the '70's, when I was in my teens, I was heavily into prog (and still am). In the '80's, I was sorely disappointed that most of my favorite prog bands had greatly altered and watered down their music--especially Genesis. (And yes, Asia really pissed me off.) Still, I managed to see a few of the bands live--Rennaissance, Yes, Genesis, Rush and Wishbone Ash--and they were all FANTASTIC! Probably because--in the concert hall or club--they had a "captive" audience and had the freedom to do what they loved.

    The 2019 remix of "Momentary Lapse of Reason" actually sounds like a proper Pink Floyd album. The 80s sound is stripped back, Nick Mason adds his own drum parts to most of the songs, and Rick Wright's keyboard parts from live shows are mixed into the studio tracks. The song "Dogs of War" is actually listenable. A much better sound than the original release.

    Finally! Someone who hates VdGG as much as me! Peter Hamill and the annoying sax of David Jackson. They take the most grating of King Crimson's Islands and double down on the irritation. If one goes on prog sites, however, VdGG is referred to with reverence. "Whoa, they are waaaaay out there! Now THAT is progressive!" There is a reason why they didn't sell albums outside their circle of friends. As for ELP's Works, I think they decided to put it under the ELP umbrella for marketing purposes. Yes made their solo album period and none of them sold well except perhaps Fish Out Of Water. Works Vol. 1 went Gold in several countries.

    What a fun show. Hard to see some of my own "sacred cows" being shot down: "In a Silent Way", "Third", "Pawn Hearts", "In the Court of the Crimson King".
    I didn't like the criticism of Neal Morse which went beyond the music. I am a Christian but I did not connect with the "Testimony" album. It confirmed my fears that the music would not be as equally important as the message. However, I think the subsequent albums "One" and "Sola Scriptura" are excellent. Yet, I haven't been happy with his recent projects.

      I've been thinking more about the Neal Morse criticism, and it is interesting to see how some folks in the prog industry reacted to Neal's initial conversion. But that was also almost 20 years ago. Over the last 10 years he has worked with Transatlantic, Flying Colors, and NMB (which is more of a band concept than Morse solo) and the lyrics from those bands are more secular like classic Spock's Beard.

    • @jimmycampbell78

      When people say they don’t like prog I wonder if they only mean 70s bands comprising men with beards and brown cardigans; playing jazz-influenced stuff and flutes prominent. There’s a heck of a lot of bands classed as prog rock, and many that sound completely different from each other.

      Over the years 'The Final Cut' has grown in my estimation so much that it's now the Pink Floyd album I listen to the most. I think it has Roger Waters' most affecting lyrics and vocals. It's arguable how much one should consider it a band album, but I think it's an excellent one nevertheless.

    I remember ELP "Works" tour was the first concert (in the Detroit area anyway) to charge DOUBLE DIGITS!!!! ($11!!!)
    Never Mind that unlike most groups who bring in local orchestras each stop, ELP brought their own Orchestra/infrastructure.

    Luis made some really good points about the album "Under Wraps" and Ian Anderson. Is it classic Tull ? No. Is it a great Tull album ? No. But it is interesting music. Set these songs to different Instrumentation - guitar and flute - and the album doesn`t get dumped on. He`s right about Ian Anderson having a certain level of quality. It`s not my favorite Jethro Tull album and I get why people hate it, but the songs are a lot more interesting than most of what was being released around the same time period.

    • @ericporter344
      @ericporter344 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for watching Jeffrey, and I agree with Luis' take, that there are some good songs at the core. But the arrangements, production, lack of much Martin Barre and synth/drum sounds buried those songs in a pile of shit. Too much good Tull to spend time on Under Wraps for me.
      Appreciate and respect your thoughts, and thanks for watching!

    Man, I hope Luis survived that. IMHO the following. I Can't make an Album now - absolutely man. Under bags (J Tull) terrible except the acoustic song of title. A choice of mine: Wishbone Ash 4 mostly insipid AOR nonsense. Saga produced some stinkers up until the 90's when they started producing decent albums again funnily enough I quite like Steel Umbrellas and from then on. Gentle Giant could have farted a madrigal into buckets and I'd still have loved it. Overtime the GG poppy album has grown on me. If Annie repeatedly vomited into a a drain I'd still love her - those albums from '79 are poppy but there's still a lot to enjoy I feel. Always thought Olias was cobblers but everyone said how great it was almost convincing me. Good reissue booklet though - that I haven't touched yet. I have every piece of music VDGG or Peter Hammill have ever released. Bank's first album Curious Feeling is a superb classic, yes subsequent albums are bobbins. George had simply been controlled by his animus! I'm off to listen to the Colin Scott ne Thistlewaite album sounds magic. I've listened to a song so far but I think Ken is being a bit mean with his criticism considering it isn't supposed to be a prog album but folk. I rather liked the first track. Also listened to Diagonal and love them specially Arc their third album - a must for all VDGG fans: reminded me of vDGG, Human League and Joy Division although they seem to have a very wide range of influences and aren't afraid to use them. Highly recommended, the live in Leeds album on Bandcamp for Pay What You Want at the moment. Lastly, a call out to Ken, talking of VDGG, can you possibly look into getting the Areknames lads back together to make a new album. What a superb group they were but sadly overlooked. Stay luminous guys. Classic show, gotta be a part 2.

    What a fun and enjoyable episode. Ranks among my favorite episodes from SoT. I knew going in to this that The Astonishing was going to get beat up…it’s not for everyone but I love that record.
    Really surprised by Ken’s take on Nine by Circus Maximus. I think that’s their best. It’s Havoc that I would absolutely mentioned in a top 5. It’s really not great, especially from a band as capable as CM.
    Thanks guys! Would love a part 2 someday!

      A very fun episode indeed. We like what we like, and even great bands make stinkers. Funny thing is, your stinkers aren't nescessarily mine. ;-) Concerning Circus Maximus, I completely agree, Havoc did nothing for me, but I love Nine. Less proggy than the two first albums for sure, a great album nonetheless. The Circus guys do love their 80's metal and their AOR as well as their prog, as seen in their other projects. Perfect blend for me really. :-)

    Love Asia's debut and GTR's sole release. Admittedly, far from progressive milestones, but taken as AOR albums, both are fantastic collections that I enjoy to this day (and "Sketches In The Sun" remains arguably my favorite Howe solo piece). Great episode, guys. Love these discussions and the passion they stir for the music we love! BTW: What's the back story on the head bandage, Luis? Recent surgery? Just curious, as your hospital room and situation seems to be the elephant in the room.

    3) - WOR: Saga "Wildest Dreams" It's not prog at all anymore, but still includes some good tracks with great guitar playing by Crichton.
    2) - WORS: Jethro Tull "Under Wraps" (plus couple of their 80's albums too...)
    1) - WORST: Jon Anderson "Olias Of Sunhillow" (oh my god...)
