The idea that you can vocalise a solo as a way of coming up with one is a clue I think - David Gilmour is well known for scat singing a solo when composing one. I think the good solos are like the human voice expressing different emotions, like listening to a captivating singer.

Before I knew that was a technique that was used. I would hum or whistle a solo while strumming. Was always very effective and got the best results when writing. Nice to know I’m not the only one.

@@steveo44 There's a song where Gilmour plays the solo and sing along, it's Any Colour You Like, if you hear it thoroughly you'll be able to notice.

My favorite solo ever was/is Gary Richrath's guitar solo on REO Speedwagon's "Meet me on the mountain". (PLEASE - EVERYONE GO LISTEN TO IT - IT WAS before Van Halen) Why? Because he implements such emotion with chimes, squeels, and low groans, double stops - it made me want to buy a guitar and learn how to do the same, in 1978

Hi! I love all of that tips, they are clearly intended to opening up our way of thinkin bout solos, but i think one more thing is veery important.
You have played only in posision 1 of the pentatonic scale, and for some people this might be the only position in which they feel comfortable (ME).
I think that we should also try to play on other positions which we dont know as much as the first one and while doing this we should play for example only on position 2. After we get a feel of how position 2 feels like, we can move onto position 3. And now the most important part in my opinion:
After getting a feel for 2 adjecent positions (like 2&3 or 4&5) We should learn how to transition from position 3 to position 4 and vice versa.
I;d love to hear what You think of those ideas!

Linda Ronstadt recorded a great pop song from "An American Tail": an animated feature film from 1986 - The song "Somewhere Out There" charted, not only due to Linda's amazing voice, but the amazing guitar solo performed by Steve Lukather (Toto). He bases the solo on the melody of the song, but his use of soaring legato embellishments is awe inspiring.

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (David Gilmour)
Stevie Ray Vaughan - House is rocking
Jimi Hendrix - The Wind Cries Mary
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to heaven (Jimmy Page)
    Bonus:
John Mayer - Slow Dancing in a burning room
This were the 5 (6) guitar solos that came to my mind at first thought, this list may change as my taste changes thru time, what are yours?

Hubert Sumlin .. Try looking for him on early " Crossroads " Festival s . He said in the " early days the Turnaround wasn't nothin' but a kind of Solo some folks would throw in the best licks they had before the Singin starts up again But then white folks wrote it down as 12 bars with a turnaround & that stuck & now everybody's trying to come up with more & more fancy tricks to show off with in between the singin or in the intro & that how the Solo got started " Lol .. My favourite line in this lesson was play as long as your band will let you lol Thats how " Prog ' Rock " got started But with the 1st Rock blue's Trios like Cream As Jack Bruce said " We only had half a dozen song so we just used to keep jammin' to fill out the Set .. & that's how the endless Solo's were born . Until slowly Sanity & the constrictions of Radio replaced endless solo's & Neat perfect song's with concise solo's that are memorable .. Not actually solo' as the rest of the Band still plays or at least stays on stage . Not like the drum solos where while Bonzo showed off the rest of Led Zep went backstage to do whatever .. Lol Dear Ayla I love your lessons . Stay safe & have a happy Holiday Season . & for all you 1st time solo players if the chords are the same as the verse you could try playing something like the melody line ? & to all new players never give up & do not be discouraged .. it is better to play a few notes really well repeated than to try & be too " Far out " man . & remember it is meant to be FUN .. Happy holidays to all

There is an answer to what makes a good guitar solo. If you study classical music and the ebb and flow of the master composers, you can learn how to craft a great guitar solo like they crafted their pieces. It should tell a story. Complement the melody of the song, and also have ups and downs. If you've ever seen Buddy Guy live, you'll see that he plays with his volume throughout the solo to play with the audience and keep their ears on him. It's not a scalar run at warp speed, or just playing notes all over the place. If you listen to the Jazz greats lie Joe Pass and Django Reinhart, they take you on a musical journey. My all time favorite rock solo of all time is in "Money" by Pink Floyd. Gilmour takes you on a trip. There are different sections to the solo. In classic music, "stanzas". Your ears are glued to his guitar and the sound it makes. Yes, it's something that has to be learned and studied, but it is possible!

Well it is unique for everyone and TH-cam is a very bad guitar professor considering it cant tell what level you're at. If you don't already, start learning your fretboard. Once you know to play every single note on every single string, start with a scale - best it be the E minor pentatonic, then after you've learned all of those positions build up to a jazz scale. It doesn't matter if you actually play jazz or not, knowing that will let you play anything you want really. While you're learning the positions, try soloing over a jam track using them. Pick two positions and switch between them as you solo, this will help you both learn the positions and how to play, considering guitar is far far from just memorizing and you have to actually pick up the thing.
