Most Nintendo fans I've seen liked Emio (moreso than the critics at least), really it seems to be all those annoying hype youtubers who were the main haters of it (the same ones that constantly say the Switch 2 will get revealed next week).

I recommend AI the Somnium Files and AI nirvanA Initiative for anyone who is interested in murder mystery games like Famicom Detective Club. They do have bit more going on and some crazy paths that lead to different endings. Like, BADONKERS different.
Only played the first one for now because games are super expensive, but I completely agree! The Zero Escape series by the same writer is an all-time cult classic that shares somes similarities, including the wacky plot twists.
Ironically, you’re actually slightly wrong about the sentiment behind Murder. What makes Murder so interesting for Sonic Fans is that the characterization has NOT been this lavish or well thought out for DECADES. We were basically seeing this all for the first time, not just geeking out.
The hype may have been misleading, but it's cool to see this franchise return and its grounded atmosphere and writing sets it apart from VN contemporaries.
Grounded? Half the characters are walking dated tropes. The closest thing to groundedness was the protagonist spending too much time of things that didn't lead much of anywhere. However, that's still kind of betrayed by the fact they still figure out anything by complete accident by badgering people or stumbling on them, rather than by finding the one minuscule lead that was actually relevant, like one would with real private eye process. People who say this is close to the real job... It really isn't. The one guy doing the actual, close to reality job, is the guy who spends the whole game off-screen and exposition dumps us post-game.
In addition to some feeling misled by marketing, I'd say the price tag also alienated a lot of people from Emio. As much as I'm glad to see them following up on FDC, putting $50 on a relatively short visual novel is certainly a Nintendo move.
Yeah, I will buy it once I find it a cheaper used copy. The price for such a short game with no replay value is silly. If it had higher production values like actually being a playable detective anime or was not so linear with multiple choices and endings, I would have already bought it. Played the demo and enjoyed it. But 50€? No, Nintendo, no. You cannot tell me the costs of making it justify 50€. I'm from a rural working class family and have chronic health issues so I don't have a lot of disposable money

The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case threw me for a second, because they have the same illustrator, and probably similar gameplay, to a couple games that caught my interest in the new switch releases some months back: Retro Mystery Club. I haven't tried them yet, but the artstyle looked neat so I put them on my wishlist. They seem to be newer games that are very inspired by Hokkaido Serial Murder Case, which is why they got Kiyokazu Arai.

I've been playing Rain Code which is very on the danganronpa side of this kinda game and it vibes so far, extremely spike chunsoft, the protagonist is bound magically a big titty death god girl and all the detectives have superpowers, blood is bright pink.. you know how it goes. it's spike chunsoft.

Honestly I’m not much of a video gamer but I love books and blazing through phoenix wright with a guide and save-scumming my way through disco elysium is some of the most fun I’ve had with games, like of course there’s the satisfaction of solving the puzzle and putting things together on your own but there’s also so much to enjoy with these kinds of games with the art and writing and all that
Yeah I guess people are just drawn to different things but that’s what’s so great about video games cause it’s there’s little bits and pieces of everything in them
damn i randomly remembered Emio was even a thing 2 weeks ago and beat it just last week. seeing thorhighheels (aka guy who just makes video on literally whatever) of all people make a video on this so soon after my playthrough is crazy imo the game itself wasn't anything too special but not bad either. despite being a serial killer murder-mystery story, it really is as surprisingly mellow and cozy as thorhighheels made it out to be, i wouldnt spend more than $15 on it but it's a nice one-off experience you can finish in a week

I wouldn't really call myself a Sonic fan (I like the idea and aesthetic of Sonic games, but not the actual... games), but I loved The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Game was an adorable snippet into these fun characters' lives.
I really enjoyed all 3 famicom detective club games on switch. I hope this series gets more entries in the future. Emio and the girl who stands behind are my favorites of the trilogy that's available. 😊
personally i find "weird, experimental" nintendo to be charming actually, nintendo "fans" just dont understand the Avant garde-isms that they are currently being faced with and just want their switch two instead of being taken on this ride that has its audience which isnt them
@LutraLovegood what I’m trying is the fact that Nintendo as of late have gotten weird with it, not only the aforementioned “horror game Nintendo fans HATE” but the $100 alarm clock, museum that people uncovered their “rules for thee, not for me” philosophy on emulation (that’s a can of worms of another day) among other stuff they did this year
@@kitestar imo that expensive alarm clock and shitty emulation stance go right in hand with the limited-release Super Mario 3D All-Stars from a few years ago. I'm not sure how I'd define it, but I would go in a more negative direction than "avant-garde" for sure. Emio was a great idea, though, and I'm very glad they finally made something that's actually good for players and not just motivated by greed!
Honestly I wonder if people weren't really paying attention to what Emio was when they got it because well... the Famicon Detective Club games are all mostly a talking to people thing. I think Emio even lampshades this by having the protag mention this is what detective work is mostly like and not the running around guns blazing thing fictional depictions often do lol. Oh well, hopefully most people that got the game were satisfied even if some reviewers were expecting something more gory and over the top.

Based only on the demo, I can say Emio is more frustrating than fun. Too much of the game is "exhaust every option, in every room, then do it all again to find the one inconspicuous prompt that has silently been given a new response". I know that sounds like every visual novel but I promise there are plenty which flow more smoothly.

Emio is the darkest Nintendo has gone on switch and the epilogue is super dark... surely darker than the girl who stands behind. 85 on metacritic, sold great 4 a VN... people liked it a lot I wouldn't be so negative: it is a decent introduction to the world of VNs. Hokkaido I imported from Japan, I still have to play it. Shame the original on the cartridge is in jp only.

the games that have maximum hangoutability to me are the crossbell arc of Trails.. Crossbell is my favourite places in all of video gaming for a reason

Haven't seen any hate for the game, just disappointment for not getting a higher production value game after the kinda genius marketing campaign. I think if either the game would have been cheaper or it would have had higher production values and being longer.

I watched a playthrough of the Sonic Inflation Adventure trilogy because of you mentioning it. What starts out as a shitpost becomes a social commentary on the dangers of escapism.
It's like that one revolver digital indie game that had a well animated 80s anime trailer and it was a pixel art beat'em up i think? (It literally looked great) And then people got mad because something something pixel art grumble grumble
I wouldn't really call myself a Sonic fan (I like the idea and aesthetic of Sonic games, but not the actual... games), but I loved The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Game was an adorable snippet into these fun characters' lives.

I really enjoyed all 3 famicom detective club games on switch. I hope this series gets more entries in the future. Emio and the girl who stands behind are my favorites of the trilogy that's available. 😊

personally i find "weird, experimental" nintendo to be charming actually, nintendo "fans" just dont understand the Avant garde-isms that they are currently being faced with and just want their switch two instead of being taken on this ride that has its audience which isnt them
I'm not sure what is even avant garde here, besides Thor's editing, but even then his aesthetics are very early 2000s.
@LutraLovegood what I’m trying is the fact that Nintendo as of late have gotten weird with it, not only the aforementioned “horror game Nintendo fans HATE” but the $100 alarm clock, museum that people uncovered their “rules for thee, not for me” philosophy on emulation (that’s a can of worms of another day) among other stuff they did this year
@@kitestar imo that expensive alarm clock and shitty emulation stance go right in hand with the limited-release Super Mario 3D All-Stars from a few years ago. I'm not sure how I'd define it, but I would go in a more negative direction than "avant-garde" for sure.
Emio was a great idea, though, and I'm very glad they finally made something that's actually good for players and not just motivated by greed!
Honestly I wonder if people weren't really paying attention to what Emio was when they got it because well... the Famicon Detective Club games are all mostly a talking to people thing. I think Emio even lampshades this by having the protag mention this is what detective work is mostly like and not the running around guns blazing thing fictional depictions often do lol. Oh well, hopefully most people that got the game were satisfied even if some reviewers were expecting something more gory and over the top.

It was good though,bit better in some aspect than Paranormasight and i am saying this as fan of the series since the Famicom Detective got translated for Snes back then,sure the atmosphere isn't as good compared to the Snes game gritty visual but the newest part is still good

Based only on the demo, I can say Emio is more frustrating than fun. Too much of the game is "exhaust every option, in every room, then do it all again to find the one inconspicuous prompt that has silently been given a new response".
I know that sounds like every visual novel but I promise there are plenty which flow more smoothly.

Emio is the darkest Nintendo has gone on switch and the epilogue is super dark... surely darker than the girl who stands behind. 85 on metacritic, sold great 4 a VN... people liked it a lot I wouldn't be so negative: it is a decent introduction to the world of VNs. Hokkaido I imported from Japan, I still have to play it. Shame the original on the cartridge is in jp only.
