You know, Gabe has to be on the most comfortable seat in the world.
He literally invents almost everything we know and is that humble that he doesn't tell anyone about this. Literally created an infinity money glitch by just appealing to people who actually plays games.
I never even seen any negativity for this man, he's literally untouchable

@@XDRosenheim The thing is, it isn't exactly a bad thing, it's just that the companies use it in the most shitty way possible. Let's take helldivers 2 for example, it's a life service game with a battle pass, but it's done in the correct form, not like some companies who do it lazily.
(sorry for my bad english, it's not my primary language)

The only complaint I can think of is his hand in creating the modern hell of "premium skins" and nearly killing legitimate game modding in the process. You know, the same game modding that made Steam so popular before HL2 and Steam has been desperately trying to make up for with the Steam Workshop?
The other guy mentioned the mass licensing of games, but Steam ironically made getting illegitimate games easier. The bulk of developers these days just use Steam DRM, and that's been easy to defeat basically since Steam first released.
Otherwise, we owe the guy for inventing modern PC gaming, keeping VR FOSS, keeping gaming affordable, and keeping Microsoft on their toes for the last 20 years.

@@chibisayori20Physical media for PC gaming had been dying for a long time and Valve just happened to pull the plug. In the mid 90's we had CD-Keys that were tied to only one computer. By the early 2000's we had games that came on 8 different discs that took half an hour or more to install. By the mid 2000's we had DRM like Denuvo that reported everything from the background or allowed you only a handful of installs per key.
And up until Gamestop/EB Games demanded that PC Games stop coming in giant cardboard boxes and instead adopt the DVD jewel cases of consoles someone could in no time fill up our shelves with PC Games.
Valve just put physical media discs out of its misery.

If you are considering switching to Linux i would recommend going with Ubuntu or Linux Mint. You have software center with all free software, and installation wizard is click click click. On linux you don't need antivirus and its free (while its not impossible to catch virus on Linux, its not nearly as much as its on windows platform). Learning curve is not as big as you might think. Once you get hooked, you will not return to windows again ( soon ), but that will happen over time for sure. And then again you will be returning to linux over and over and over again, until you finally start using it without thinking again about other OS :) Thats how it was in my case at least. I can do everything i could do on windows, starting from screenracording to video editing, to 3d modeling and programming, even 3d printing. Everything works as it should for the most part.

It is undeniable that Gaben is very good at foreseeing the future of gaming and using that to get in early. That being said, it’s not like he’s infallible either.
Some of his successes are built on the back of failure. The most notable example of this being Steam Machine and Steam Link which failed but helped Valve gain the knowledge they needed to make the Steam Index and Steam Deck into successful hardware. Even if he’s really focused on BCI, it might not necessarily mean that it’s going to be the future of the gaming. That being said it could be on the right track though even if it is the wrong bet.

gabe also brought gaming to linux it initially sort of failed game companies were porting games slowely. this was in the era of the steam machines.
dont get me wrong there were a lot of gaming possible at that time on linux.
years went by and linux gaming were sort of in a standstill until a guy made DXVK to play Nier Automata on linux which caught gabes attention. it spawned Proton which revolutionized linux gaming and made it viable.
then the result of all of this was the steam deck.

For example you can put games on Micro SD.
You don't need to download games for Steam Deck if you have it on your computer, just connect it with the same connection on your PC and the games from your PC will be transferred to your Steam Deck.
You can do Upgrade storage and get permission from Steam itself.
You can do Custom Rom OS Steam Deck like whatever you want.
he is not like a game businessman but a gamer who becomes a businessman, he listens to all complaints and fixes complaints from gamers that they have felt so far

BSOD’s, but it must have been fate, because later I found out about Minecraft, and now I have my own pc (and I even have Linux cuz windows 11 almost bricked my damn pc), and I love video games.
My mom’s love for games, and her background in coding the old pc’s (idk if it was ibm but it wasn’t bc we owned it, probs school idk), but man. It makes me happy to live in a world like this.

The thing is, Steam doesn't usually get that money at all. They give all that 15% market fee to the publishers (the ones you see when checking a steam page for a game). Although yes, in games like CS2 or TF2 they get that 15% cut since they ARE the developers, in any other game that wasn't developed or published by them, the cut goes straight to the publishers.
For indie devs and other dev studios that self-publish their own games through steam, it can help them fund more content, and since even steam cards have that cut, it's kind of a brilliant marketing strategy, because if the game gets enough funding and the dev team of that game makes more content:
    More content = New sales
New sales = More Money for Steam and the game publishers
    More Money = More Funds
And More funds = More content
And the cycle repeats on and on. The only catch is that the game DOES need popularity and sales in order to make the cycle repeat. But that's just another way Valve makes it up for devs that use Steam.

before this video i didnt know what Gabe did at Microsoft, after this video i now know just how many details can be wrong when it comes to modern technology.
while the index wasnt as revolutionary(or accessible) as the HTC vive the steam deck was revolutionary for pc gaming, the steam deck is itself a Linux pc. valve also created what is essentially the almighty windows compatibility program for linux(proton). to reiderate valve created a linux gaming pc that showed linux can game while also creating a compatibility layer for windows games so that developers didnt have to support linux and players would still be able to play their games. i think thats pretty revolutionary for gaming in general
oh yeah and dont forget steamVR was created as an openVR client for PCVR games(litterally the first vr client)

To understand Gabe, he's a scientist. He has made many industry innovations that we take for granted today and made a fortune out of them. To me, all of Gabe's game projects have been scientific experiments in in-game media. Mind you, he's doing that and has made billions of money. Recent games that they have made are scientific experiments. Not every project is successful but since steam is making so much money, the money isn't an issue, they are doing it for science.

There is a conjecture that PC Games have influenced the PC market most, both when it comes to the Operation System of choice and when it comes to the insane improvement of hardware in such a very short time.
So, with making SteamOS and brining it preinstalled on gaming devices, Gabe is also forcing the gaming market to port their games to linux (or at least work well with proton). Since SteamOS is free, Desktop Gaming PCs with SteamOS preinstalled will have a competitive advantage over Windows PCs. They will both be cheaper (as we're seeing with the Lenovo Legion Go 2) and possibly be faster (as we've seen with some Benchmarks with certain GPUs). At some point (I think before 2030) we'll see a bigger shift in the OS market, leading to many companies (like Adobe) releasing Linux versions of their software in order to not lose that section of the market just because their software doesn't run on linux.
So, my guess for Half-Life 3 (HL Alyx 2?) is that's it's going to be a Linux exclusive. It'll run on Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go 2, and the release may even be coordinated with the release of SteamOS 3.0 and some manufacturers offering Desktiop PCs with SteamOS preinstalled.

I might be wrong, but BCI could be the future of VR, no controls needed, just put on a helmet of sorts and it will read the inputs right from your brain while still outputting the video/audio as usual via the headset.

Well, when Gaben used Windows 8 he saw the downfall coming, so Valve started to develop SteamOS and the Steam Machines... All lead to the Steam Deck and that is leading to an overall better gamin experience on Linux (system SteamOS is based on).
I'm very interested in Lenovo's next handheld console with SteamOS, the first of many.

To think, 13 years ago, and I quote from wikipedia:
Valve has indicated displeasure with the approaches that both Microsoft and Apple are taking with their respective operating systems, limiting what applications could be run, and upon the release of Windows 8 in 2012, Valve's CEO Gabe Newell called it "a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space", and discussed the possibility of promoting the open-source operating system Linux that would maintain "the openness of the platform".
And it's bloody working! In a couple of days it'll be a year since I switched to Linux from Windows 10, and there hasn't been a game I haven't gotten to run one way or the other, and that's the only downside: sometimes you need to approach problems differently to get something working. Mod managers for example aren't always the easiest to get working as intended.

If you listen to the developer commentary on the Half Life games, you'll come to understand that the Portal games were self-deprecating humor about valve's office.
These people made a literal botnet supercomputer hivemind out of their entire office just to render raytraced lighting in the year 2000 so they could bake it into HL2.
