Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (visa category B-1), for tourism (visa category B-2), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2).
How to Apply
Step 1
Complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application (DS-160) form.
Step 2
Pay the visa application fee.
Step 3
Schedule your appointment on this web page. You need three pieces of information in order to schedule your appointment:
Your passport number
The CGI reference number from your Visa Fee receipt. (Click here if you need help finding this number.)
The ten (10) digit barcode number from your DS-160 confirmation page
Step 4
Visit the U.S. Embassy on the date and time of your visa interview. You must bring a printed copy of your appointment letter, your DS-160 confirmation page, one photograph taken within the last six months and your current and all old passports. Applications without all of these items will not be accepted.
Qualifications
If you apply for a B-1/B-2 visa, you must demonstrate to a consular officer that you qualify for a U.S. visa in accordance with the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Section 214(b) of the INA presumes that every B-1/B-2 applicant is an intending immigrant. You must overcome this legal presumption by showing:
In addition to these items, you must present an interview appointment letter confirming that you booked an appointment through this service. You may also bring whatever supporting documents you believe support the information provided to the consular officer.
That the purpose of your trip to the United States is for a temporary visit, such as business, pleasure, or medical treatment
That you plan to remain in the United States for a specific, limited period of time
Evidence of funds to cover your expenses while in the United States
That you have a residence outside the United States, as well as other binding social or economic ties, that will ensure your return abroad at the end of your visit
Personal or domestic employees and crew members working aboard vessels within the Outer Continental Shelf may qualify for B-1 visas under certain circumstances.
Some foreign nationals may be ineligible for visas according to The Immigration and Nationality Act.
Application Items
If you apply for a business/tourist visa, you must submit the following:
A Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application (DS-160) Form. Visit the DS-160 web page for more information about the DS-160.
A passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States
One (1) 2"x2" (5cmx5cm) photograph taken within the last six months. This web page has information about the required photo format.
A receipt showing payment of your US$160 non-refundable nonimmigrant visa application processing fee paid in local currency. This web page has more information about paying this fee.
Supporting Documents
Supporting documents are only one of many factors a consular officer will consider in your interview.
You should bring the following documents to your interview. Original documents are always preferred over photocopies and you must bring these documents with you to the interview. Do not fax, email or mail any supporting documents to the U.S. Embassy
Current proof of income, tax payments, property or business ownership, or assets.
Your travel itinerary and/or other explanation about your planned trip.
A letter from your employer detailing your position, salary, how long you have been employed, any authorized vacation, and the business purpose, if any, of your U.S. trip.
Additionally, based on your purpose of travel, you should consider bringing the following:
Students
Bring your latest school results, transcripts and degrees/diplomas. Also bring evidence of financial support such as monthly bank statements, fixed deposit slips, or other evidence.
Working adults
Bring an employment letter from your employer and pay slips from the most recent three months.
Businessmen and company directors
Bring evidence of your position in the company and remuneration.
Visiting a relative
Bring photocopies of your relative's proof of status (e.g. Green Card, naturalization certificate, valid visa, etc).
Previous visitors to the United States
If you were previously in the United States, any documents attesting to your immigration or visa status.

Two questions:
I am travelling to my home country and will submit my U.S. visa renewal from there however I am a temporary resident (work permit) of another country.
1. Should it be yes or no for the “are you applying from the same country or location where the visa was issued and is this country or location your place of principal residence” ?
2. If I am a temporary resident of another country (work permit) what address am I supposed to put for home address?

Bharat, very good video, thank you. My parents are qualified for the drop off(no interview) so we selected Ahmedabad for the document delivery but then the website still took me to the VAC appointment page and had me setup an appointment for May. I am really confused if they really need to go to Mumbai or are they ok with dropping off the documents to Ahmedabad. If so what is the purpose of the VAC appointment? any thoughts?

Hi, My wife has a valid US visa on her old Indian passport name.
After marriage her passport got expired and she renewed the passport to her new name(Middle and Surname got changed in this process)
Her Visa is expiring in 2027

I am not sure, Try to fill the application & answer the questions, the website will automatically tell you if you are eligible for Dropbox.

Hello Sir, I applied for my mom's renewal visa. She is eligible for a drop box but after paying the visa fees, it's showing Appointment Type is Consular. What does Consular refer to? Does she have to go through an interview.

If your visa is going to expire in the next 12 months, you have an option to renew it before it expires.
Also, it can be applied within 24 months of the expiry of your most recent B1/B2 visa.

My self and wife are Indian Nationals. Our T ten year old B/1 B /2 visa is expiring on 15 th December 2023.
1) Please confirm the application FORM to be used extension ie. DS-160 for applying the extension.
2) We have become Permanent residents of Australia ( Parent Contributory visa). Now we are in Melbourne Australia.
3) We have to apply for extension from Australia as we are not in a position to return to India.
The form for Us visa is DS 160, give it a try while filling and it will ask you if you want to renew from the same country where you first applied..

No First/Last Name: If your entire name is written in the field for surname, and the given name field is left blank, the consulate will treat your entire name as your surname and write “FNU” (First Name Unknown) in the first name section (or write “LNU” if you leave the surname field blank).

For b2 visa renewal (Dropbox), do we need to submit all the supporting documents like invitation letter, property documents, salary slips of the sponsor etc.. or is it enough to send only documents mentioned in the confirmation letter. (It just asks for photo, confirmation letters and previous passports with the visa stamp).

And when you visit, they may not ask for all other documents but its good to keep the supporting documents alongwith

They will let you know during your appointment. Anything they dont need will be returned alongwith passport

applying for b2 visa - i am staying and being hosted by a family member but will be paying for my flight tickets myself, i will not be having to pay for accommodation since i will be at my family members house and they will cover the rest of my travel costs like food etc. So under 'person paying for trip' should i say 'self' or 'other relative'? thank you
Should ideally be self if you can support this with your tax return/bank documents. Saying someone else will pay might raise a red flag that you have plans for staying longer than a tourist.. Good Luck !

I'm travelling with my parents, we had set our intended travel dates to be early July, however only after paying the MRV fee and submitting our application is when we saw that the earliest interview date would be early august! I think generally in principal, if the degree was not completed, for any reasons, whether for visa or anything else, you cannot mention that anywhere right, unless there is more information to it that isnt mentioned in your comment :)

You do not have to wait until your current visa expires. You can apply for a new visa even if your current visa is valid.
eligible travelers with B1/B2 visas that expired during the past 24 months can renew their visa online without an embassy interview.
applicants renewing visas that expired more than 24 months ago must attend an embassy interview BUT I think you can renew it until 48 months after expiry
