  • Today we're reviewing Broadway Limited Imports new die-cast S-3 HO model. They are great looking locomotives and sound beautiful; however, both our locomotives had different cosmetic damage on them straight out of the box. One will be getting shipped back to BLI to be replaced. Still, they are nice looking steam locomotives and we were impressed with the sound and features the engines had to offer. If you'd like to purchase one of these locomotives, visit hogtrainz.com/BWLMILWAUKEES3.html
    We'd like to thank Delay in Block Productions for allowing us to us their 261 prototype footage for this video. Visit them at / delayinb. .

    I had the good fortune to ride behind the 261 in 2007 when she teamed on a double header with CP2816 from Minneapolis to La Crosse, WI and back. I also live close enough to the railroad tracks in my town that I've heard her pass by on a few occasions and have footage on my channel from one of them, the same trip as that of the footage you use in your video came from.
    Thanks for the review and look at the model. It's nicely done although there is something about the feel of it that doesn't quite sit right to me. Can't put my finger on what it is and have to admit it wouldn't stop me from adding it to my collection if the right opportunity presented its self.

    I got my S3 last week, and UPS did quite a number on the box during shipping. The box the model came in was actually twisted a bit, and one corner was torn. I was lucky the model had no damage.

    475? Wow, that's extremely cheap compared to the 1700 in o scale.

      I have a huge "many tens of thousands ,of dollars", in HO from the 70's Through the mid 90's , most all NIB ,and the level of detail on these new locos ,put mine to shame ,I'm sure they aren't worth 1/3 of what I paid for them .Looking at the details and quality of these new locos .I know I wouldn't want any of mine ,over them. It kinda sucks.

    I recently bought some smoke fluid with Lionel’s logo on the bottle; could I safely use that in this or any other Broadway model?

    Do these Paragon 3 models have any sort of volume control on them? I live in a small apartment and I don’t want to disturb my neighbors with the sound

    Nice review, if it was technically ok i would have touched up these spots with the same paint i would used to do the pilot wheels.

      Yep 261 has a Tyfon A125 which had problems so the pressure had to be lowered so now it plays a B rather than a C#. It did have a RS25 (a single chime Leslie) but the diaphragm began to corrode (I diagnosed that myself when Steve showed me it).

    In the beginning, I hated the Amtrak diesel on that excursion. It ruined it. They should've just gotten all of the Milwaukee Road passenger cars and nothing else. No Amtrak diesels, no other railroad passenger cars, just 261 and Milwaukee Road passenger cars.

    • @starrywarz
      @starrywarz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Amtrak locomotive is only there for Grade Crossings and power to the rest of the train such as lights and a/c

    • @frootloops1696
      @frootloops1696 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Owen, shut up dude. Without the diesel, no dynamic braking for going downhill, WHICH IS MORE DANGEROUS, the cars also need lighting and pretty much everything. The dynamo on 261 idnt powerful enough to power the whole train itself. Quit whining over the diesel and put on some big boy pants

    • @cwhuffman01

      I don’t know who you all are getting your information from, but you all have obviously never worked on a steam excursion or know how steam locomotive appliances work...
      One, the Amtrak diesel in that video is there to provide moral support, it’s kind of like a backup plan. In case 261 breaks down (which does happen occasionally to any steam locomotive) they will be able to get the train to a station, instead of having it sit on the mainline until the engine could be rescued. For some locomotives, the diesel will provide extra power or HEP to the coaches, but most coaches have independent generators or there will be a power car that supplies the HEP.
      Secondly, In some cases the diesel will provide dynamic braking, but that is only on excursions where a significant grade is encountered. It’s simply more security so the cars won’t burn up the brake shoes or cause other problems. However, saying dynamo braking is safer is a bit misconception as there’s only so much braking it can provide. That’s why the airbrake still exists on locomotives and cars.
      Lastly, a steam locomotive dynamo can only produce 20-40 volts of electricity. That’s just enough to power a few lights. That’s why you see locomotives such as 844 or 765 that have running lights, cab signals, etc. utilize 2-3 steam generators.

      Umm no. I have operated tonnage trains downhills with zero dynamics. Old George Westinghouse made an appliance that lets me do that.

    At that price point, the damage is unacceptable.

    • @TheSteamChannel
      @TheSteamChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Dan Fitzgerald I agree. Even the "new" replacement locomotive they sent was damaged and I had to cough up another $22 to sent the original back to get it. Multiple drivers had wheel chipping again and the tender was scuffed on both sides. The rear tender truck was bent so the rear wheel set could easily drop from the truck. My business will be going somewhere else.

      I've been in and out of the hobby for 45 years. I appreciate the level of detail in the newer models, but I've always had a gripe with how fragile they are. I've had P2K diesels with similar issues with lift rings, step ladders etc
      My Bachmann steamers have held up well, considering.
      The damage you're talking about is unacceptable and isn't being managed at the source.

      I miss the $35 Athearn blue box locomotives.
      I've had to repair the dozen or so limited-run P2K Geeps I own. I don't even run my P2K E units very hard because of parts availability.
      It's a damn shame that we can't get a $600 locomotive to be worth that money.
