I bought one and I have had no issues. I insist that my dealer open and test the loco before shipment. I have nearly one hunderd BLI locomotives and have had no problems. I have a small quibble with your review. The eccentrics on the first drivers run lubrication pumps. The S2 as you know was a steam turbine so it had no valve gear or pistons. Otherwise well done. For thefolks who have issues with the sound.The sound is accurate for a steam turbine - I've heard many steam turbines (In power plants) so there's no chugging,just a steady "whooosh and whine".
Try to buy engines new online. I use both Hogtrainz and Trainworld. With the current MAP pricing at Athearn, you get a better product with broadway limited. If you buy them second hand- you raise the chance of getting stuck with lemons. I use a lot of Athearn ready to roll and Atlas Trainman cars and you can find them fairly cheap at local train shows new or used.
I really do like this locomotive. But I am having trouble if I'm willing to drop around $650 for a locomotive. I mean for $650, I can get a Challenger, BigBoy, Allegheny, or a Y6. I typically run articulated locomotive, but the PRR S2 Turbine is something else. EDIT: As of 2022, I finally got one. It is a freaking awesome engine.
I went threw three of these defective s2.. all had bad stuttering problems,,didn't have engineer and firemen in them..smoke unit took a dump,and train wobbles back and forth do to the main driving wheels miss shapened and but not least the cab apron came off . There quality control stinks. They need to go back to Korea and have them build there trains again..this train isn't the only one I'd had troubles with..went threw four ppr Q2..all do to bad smoke units that short out the decoders...what I was told from somebody at bli,,these S2 where rushed...

Question, what radius curves do you run this on? I have 18” and 15” loops and want to know if this will run on my layout :)
@@ethanisaacs8472 I would not recommend that radius, it is a long engine. Maybe something like 24", 26" radius would be safe.

I think they are rushing everything these days. We just picked up two of their new late challengers for review and neither has cab figures in it.
