  • The Canon AE-1 is a much sought-after by boomers 35-mm film camera. Originally produced in 1976, the AE-1 was Canon’s most successful attempt at a 35 mm SLR camera for the general consumer, and a huge success during an era when competition between Canon, Nikon, and Olympus was fierce.
The camera is just as popular with film enthusiast today, if not more so, than it was even in it's hey-day. A lot of photographers, like myself, could only afford one brand, and one camera, as they were expensive for their time.
Today, you can find a Canon AE-1 on ebay for less than $75. As a basic film camera, it's perfect for an intermediate photographer with enthusiasm for 35mm photography. Its simplicity is ideal for those early steps away from fully automated cameras. And, the AE-1 produces excellent images regardless of lighting conditions.
Follow me along as we stroll the main street of a town called Morgantown, Indiana in the middle of a sunny afternoon and shot a roll of Kentmere 100 black and white pan film using my Canon AE-1 with a very nice Canon 35-70mm f/3.5 FD zoom. Sure to be a fun, and informative photo walk. Enjoy!

Nice! My first SLR was a brand new AE-1 purchased in ’78. I’m still taking pictures with it and it still works flawlessly.

Good to hear! My has a bit of a 'sneeze' lol and I've been told that means it's deteriorating, but I like the sound so I'm riding it out! Thanks for watching, and taking the time to comment!

I picked up 2 AE-1 over the years for next to nothing. Both work but one has the famous Canon wine. I want to try Kentmere after watching this video.

I definitely recommend Kentmere. I'm not a huge fan of 400 speed film, but sometimes it's necessary. Either way, the 100 or 400 are both not only nice film for contrast, but also not flimsy, so easy to work with for developing/scanning/handling. Also less than $6 per roll in the US for 36 exposures. Can't beat that.

Spent 20 years just south of Morgantown. Kathys Cafe has a neat history and was the spot to stop for a nice home-cooked meal. Saw Coach Knight in there one time eating, he would always stop and have a bite and then go to old folks home across the street to say Hi and spend time there. Nice town and good people.

Very cool town! I love running between Indy and Nashville on 135. Planning to explore some of the backroads this summer. Thanks for watching and thanks for the Knight info - loved that guy!!!
