Could have used fiber optics connected to 3 or more blinking leds!

That would not give you the required flexibility and color range. In this solution, you can adjust the speed of blinking but with the blinking LEDs, you would not be able to do that.

Unfortunately, no. It is too large in diameter to fit inside the cockpit nosecone tube.

Yes, it can
