    Thank you for keeping up with the oils, they really are my preferred medium now because of your work. Question wrt Metallic paints and preferred brands as the variance seems huge. Gamblin silver is amazing and its almost liquid metal in its consistency, but Gamblin gold has pigment you can see from space. I'm having decent results with mixing my own with the GSW pigments but wondering what your preferred brands are.

Would you consider doing a video in this style for terrain pieces? GW (and some others) release terrain pieces now that are so detailed that they could really benefit from your approach to speed painting. Great video, I really like the incorporation of oils.
    Questions: For the metalics, do you also mix them with oils to do the highlighting? Also, do you just use mineral spirits to thin the oil paints (to improve the flow when painting freehand for example), or do you use other mediums (Galkyd, Neo-Megilp, etc)? Appreciate it, keep up the great work.

    Great video as always, can't wait for your next video, I'm always motivated to try new things when I see one.
    This isn't related to this video, but I'm thinking about getting myself a blue and a red primer from Vallejo to mix purple and magenta primers (unfortunately I just found those in cans which I try to avoid now that I have an airbrush) to use as a base for a zenithal white highlight pre-shade. As you showed more than once in your videos purple and magenta are a better base than black for shadows when using certain contrast or other transparent colors. It feels a little like wasting color and time when priming black, highlighting white and then shadowing with purple when I could do this in two layers instead of three. What do you and all other painters think?

  • @rebelwarlock
    @rebelwarlock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay. I've seen a lot of your videos talking about how great oils are, but this is the first time I've ever actually been convinced to try them myself. Specifically, around the 5 minute mark where you're cleaning up the base layer looks absolutely amazing already and could honestly be the end of the paint job for a comic book look. One question though: doesn't undiluted oil paint take forever to dry? I've heard it can stay workable for upwards of a week.

  • @Finding_Arcadia

    I have no history with art, have never painted a miniature, and barely have any understanding of color theory but
    This shit lit!
    I think instead of buying 150 bottles of paint and continuing to be ignorant of the deeper intricacies of color, im going to try to learn using this palette, maybe without the green and blue to start.
    I dont know if you read these comments since the video is so old, but if you (or anyone else) is reading this, would you recommend pre-making mixed colors in empty bottles, or just use raw amounts from the beginning and learning as you go?

      THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH!!! Super appreciated 😊 and welcome on board!!!
      If you are working on big projects, like an entire army for example, premixing the key tones is a great idea that increases your efficiency and general coherence exponentially! Working on single models or small warbands you get more interesting and personal hues mixing on the spot (plus it's a lot of fun and a great learning the experience!)

    • @Finding_Arcadia
      @Finding_Arcadia 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MarcoFrisoniNJMoh thank God lol, based off your other videos I was afraid the consensus would likely be to blend rather than premix, and I was really dreading the impending headache of matching tones for a small army. Now I just need to pick between oils and acrylics... Thank you!

I was wondering if i could ask you a question? I am currently about to paint my first army - Alpha Legion - The scheme i am trying to achieve is from the cover of "Head of the Hydra" which shows the armour being a light turquoise, What colours would you suggest using for my shadows?

  • @KrullMaestaren
    @KrullMaestaren 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if you prime the model and then fill in the metalic parts with shiny acrylics (dries fast) before you create the first oil layer? Oils are often very transparent (have learned that, the hard way xD) so you should be able to see the original silver but you can then add a variation of darker and brighter blue to really bring it to life. Or maybe red/brown on some gold or bronze?

  • @pyrox27

    Marco, I love your work with oils. Can you go into more detail sometime for alternatives to zenithal highlighting for people who do not have airbrushes? While it is very basic, it's difficult to sometimes understand these concepts without seeing them in action. Thank you so much for sharing your process with oils! I love it!

      Also I'd love to see an depth look at enamels used as the primary paint for miniatures as well!

      One of his value sketching videos shows how to zenithal with just a brush. I think it's the like 3 colors, 2 hours, 1 brush vid. His painting a large 3D printed mini video shows how to zenithal with spray cans.

    If you want some good Italian metal, check out Mortuary Drape. I have no idea what they're saying, but I love throwing them on the playlist every now and then!
    Also, you should get some lids from medicine or large juice bottles. Along with some sticky tac, you can use them as a paint grip so you don't have to worry about wearing gloves and getting paint on your fingers.
    Cool as fuck models. I'll have to get a warband of my own for FP!

    Marco, what would you say is a good airbrush paint? Something pre-mixed that you dont have to mess with too much? I recently bought like 30 Molotow paint refills (seen you use them before). I realize one can just add thinner/water/flow improver to paints like P3 or Vallejo Model Color. But I still new to the airbrush and I kind of hate having to be slowed down by the mixing process.

    Hey Marco!
    I was wondering what metallic paints you used while working with oil paints? I haven't been able to source a set I really like.

    First off what a great Video! And I have a question, at about 6:20 or so in the video you mention doing the oil priming technique and then using contrast paints, and I really would like to try/play with that idea. Would you lust let the prime dry or would you have to clear coat it too before using acrylics over the top? Thanks in advance for any info. Or you could just make a video :)

      You don't have to clear coat the acrylics before using oil paints. Just make sure the acrylic layer is dry

    Love this Marco! Is there a good picture you know of showing this full expanded palette any where? Going to try this on my next project as i want to get better at mixing colors.

      Thanks! Just Google, Zorn palette and you'll get an overload of info and visual tools; it's a foundational step of painting/atelier education so there's plenty of resources 😊

    Hey Marco, what are the pros/cons of using oils or heavy body acrylics for detailing? I have oils but wondering if heavy body acrylics are worth getting too. Seems like you mostly use them at the end but you've used oils in the same manner, so are they redundant?

    il maestro, what makes molotow a primer? To a pleb like myself, it appears to be a plain black acrylic paint. Is there an additive that helps differentiate itself from all the other basic acrylic paints?
