Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite has been acclaimed as 'one of the most talented and intriguing choreographers working today' (New York Times). Flight Pattern, created in 2017, is her first work for The Royal Ballet. Critically-acclaimed at its premiere, Flight Pattern is a poignant response to one of the biggest humanitarian crises facing current society.
This large-scale ensemble work, which takes a powerful and sombre look at the ongoing refugee crisis, is set to music from Górecki's 'Symphony of Sorrowful Songs'. Górecki's music, often associated with the Holocaust, explores themes of motherhood and the separation of families. Pite gives these themes new meaning in a work that moves from the big picture of displaced communities to focus on the emotions of individuals: the large ensemble cast moves as one body, packed together in tight rows, until one distraught couple are marked out from the crowd through a poignant pas de deux.
Music: Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's Third Symphony (first movement), conducted by Jonathan Lo, performed by soprano Francesca Chiejina and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

Mad props and hats off to the leadership of Royal Ballet for pursuing a different artistic spirit that can produce, as in this case, different messaging, even if it veers from the look of what RB does the best. I hope RB forever continues to show the world that they are an organization of not just the best bodies on the planet but also the most dedicated artists residing in those bodies.
Been following Pite’s career since before she retired as a dancer. She’s a brilliant choreographer. Conceptually on another level than her peers.

Has anyone here seen the whole Flight Pattern show? I wonder why I am not able to find anything else of it on youtube. I am going to be seeing the new Flight Pattern at the ROH next October and I am just curious to see a bit more about it.
I have seen the whole show, I loved it and watched it on repeat. I liked the parts with full company even more than this excerpt. It's fantastically made on the music.

@@promich7194 Even the best make mistakes and this piece is most certainly one of those. It has every single contemporary cliche in it. She can, and has, done much better.
I don't really understand why this choreographer gets the red carpet from big opera houses like the Paris opera and the ROH... It is very conventional in fact, but then if I want convention, I'd rather turn to classical ballet, as convention there is expressive. This reminds me of Kylian, whom, I'm afraid I don't really get either... Well I suppose it takes all sorts... ( Mind you in Paris in 2016 you could get a ticket any day when Pite was on, no need to book).
Pite is a genius. Conceptually on a higher plane than any of her peers. Fearless, focused, thematic, not afraid of classical grace and form but never used for its own sake or as a fallback. There’s just no comparison. Best of her generation by a wide margin.
Not enjoyable, not intriguing, just bad. It definitely does not take a talented choreographer to put together a total wreck like this.

Timothy K this is only a small fragment of the work, her use of an ensemble of 30+ dancers is mesmeric, then again art is subjective... no need to be nasty however
