Adding tap to this performance was really a stroke of genius but it's more amazing when you find out the toll it takes on the dancer's body just to perform this single scene. Apparently tap and ballet have major differences going down the technical level that in most of the parts where he's stomping and tapping around, he has to consciously and simultaneously switch between ballet techniques to tap techniques every step he took. The routine was so taxing he said he always had insane amounts of lactic acid in his legs at the end of it
Doesn't surprise me at all. I recently watched a doco on SBS that featured a typical day for Steven Mc Rae and all I could say was "holy s**t!" His dancing was next-level insane. The titanic strength and incredible stamina needed for some of his choreography just blew my mind. Very few dancers could even attempt his routines, let alone perform them
Tap and ballet techniques are sooo different. With ballet, you want to be as light as possible but tap is all about sound, so you step harder, land harder from jumps, and overall take a different kind of impact to your feet and joints than you would with ballet. Ballet is all about pointed feet, but in tap your feet will typically be flexed. You need to stand on the balls of your feet with tap, but just so your heels are fully off the ground, whereas with ballet your feet will be either completely flat on the ground or on eleve, where you're as high up on your toes as you can get without being en pointe.
Even though the number and the camera clearly places the Hatter (and Alice to a lesser extent) as the focus, the Doormouse and Hare are fun to watch for their own characters if you focus solely on them. The Doormouse is the poor guy who doesn't know quite what's going on, as he falls asleep at every opportunity he can manage. He dislikes his two friends while at the same time wanting to be with them (clearly trying to shush the Hatter who has woken him up, and a while later shooing Alice away when the three do their forward shuffle). The dancer makes good use of the tail, either swinging it with a free hand in many instances or using it for expression, such as wringing it out after being rescued from the teapot. The little gestures with curled up fingers remind the viewer of his species. He is the poor middleman who no one quite knows what to do with, and the dancer pulls it off beautifully. The Hare is the Hatter's staunch admirer, follower, and friend. He watches the Hatter with rapt attention in the beginning, as awed as the audience is to see the tapping, before quickly becoming bored and playing pranks on Alice and the Doormouse. He loves his tea, to the point of pouring some into his breast pocket for later. He will gladly team up with the Hatter to do whatever the Hatter feels like doing and the Hatter knows this, to the point where the Hatter need only position himself for a dance move and the Hare will not only join in but call the others over, if needs be (most notably with that forward shuffle). The Hatter and Hare have a very close relationship, to the point of Alice getting a scolding from the Hatter when showing the slightest disapproval towards the Hare. The Hare seems to be the one who either makes up most of the pranks or helps follow them through, and he loves doing it too. Very entertaining on both watches! Well done to both dancers for bringing these characters to life.

It’s so accurate though. For me, Alice represents my final brain cell, the mouse represents my motivation and the Hatter and Hare represent the internet and Netflix.

I’m 75 years old, still absolutely obsessed with this Mad Hatter and his tea party. Sure wish I could have watched ballet like this sixty years ago, when I was a student.
Tap is a very interesting choice that weirdly fits the character and theme. The goal of ballet is to make as little sound with your feet as possible, while tap has the goal of being as audible as it can to the audience. Not only is it fun to watch, but the fact that Hatter is tap dancing at all serves as characterization for him.
Of course, tap dancing in a ballet is just madness!! Something so simple but so fundamental, and Steven makes it looks effortless while he admitted in a interview by the end of the number his legs were burning up. This choice of characterization is pure genius!
I agree. We watched this in my ballet class because for our spring show we’re doing Alice and wonderland. (So we were looking at “ideas in a way”) and my ballet teacher said it reminded her like Alice is running in a freeze of time. And I agree with her. I also like how you don’t even know what’s going to happen. The music is super catchy too!!🤣🤣
Steve Macrae is just so talented and his ability to switch from ballet techniques to tap is just amazing. His facial expressions really make this scene even more fun ! It's so satisfying and feels lile another instrument playing
Isn’t Steve McRae the one who played Skimbalshanks the Railway Cat in the ~cursed~ 2019 film adaptation of Cats?! For all the problems that movie had going on, McRae’s number was incredibly impressive (and one of the few competent scenes, imho). That he’s also danced the Mad Hatter, one of my favorite fictional characters, SO well makes me appreciate him even more.
as a tap dancer, the metal on the bottom of the shoes deserves all the credit for that 😌 (it hurts so badly when you accidentally kick yourself with the shoe though 😭)
I love the inclusion of tapdance. To me, Wonderland has always been about subverting expectations. You think you know how to play croquet until you're handed a flamingo. You think you know what happens when you eat a cookie, until you outgrow the room. And you think you know ballet doesn't have tapdancing until the Mad Hatter hits the stage. It adds that little extra taste of whimsical oddness that fits right in.
That move where Alice jumps and then freezes while they move across the stage looks SO EFFORTLESS. That's a lot of trust put in the other dancers and it's executed so well!
That guy was made to be the mad hatter. Everything about him is perfect. The facial features, expressions, the hair. And of course, the clothes as well. Just amazing.

I’m a dancer and purely recreational, but as the short girl of the class I have some good experience being practice-lifted, so I thought this might help. 1. In many cases the lift comes out of a jump or leap or some kind of movement, like this. Of course when jumping or leaping, we have to plié (bend knees while pulling up, needs resistance) to generate the tension to get a nice high jump. The case is the same if the movement goes into a lift. The difference is that the lifters should synchronize their run up and plié with the person they are lifting, so they get the most momentum into the air. 2. Even if you are being lifted, you really have to hold yourself. It’s much move obvious here than in some other lifts because she is holding a mid-run pose. In all cases this means engaging your back and core and wherever you are being held (eg arms/legs). In my experience one would be running into a split leap with arms stretched out to the side, and two would hold her arms (one girl each side), then as the one leaps, the two would stretch out their arms to lift her higher. They are basically using her momentum to get a more impressive height to the leap. Of course I’m not trying to take away from their strength and discipline but I thought this might be helpful.
They probably cut to another recording of a different show where the rose didn’t pop up. There’s no way she could have put it back in her sash so quickly haha
What an excellent choreography choice to have him tap dance when the other characters are all dancing ballet. Such a creative and effective way to emphasize the eccentricity of the character.
I love the costume design for the Mad Hatter, his suit jacket and vest almost tell a story if you look closely enough. Plus, the stitching on the vest from what I can see looks vintage, or at the very least was embroidered to look so
This is such an easy clip to become obsessed with... I've watched it well over thirty times myself... but I even showed this to my young cousin (7 years old) and he started singing some of the melody at me later in the day and trying to dance. It was adorable. We ended up watching it again together.
The choreography is truly stunning. I love the addition of tap. I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s perfect for the Mad Hatter. And wow, isn’t he just gorgeous!

It was dancer Steven McRae's idea. He was also the person who suggested changing his role of Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat's dance in the movie Cats into a tap routine. Steven's dance was widely lauded as the highlight in an otherwise sucky movie. Gotta hand it to Steven McRae, he knows his stuff.
That tap dancing in this was incredible! The funniest parts is when The Mad Hatter and the March Hare kept putting the Dormouse back in the teapot!! It was like "Get back in there!!"

They are basically using her momentum to get a more impressive height to the leap. Of course I’m not trying to take away from their strength and discipline but I thought this might be helpful.
1:56 when you're trying not to wake your mom when you're downstairs getting a snack.
Lol true
4:05 AND THEN YOU HEAR A GHOST.
i dont get it
Things you only notice when you've watched this video 10 times in a row: the mysteriously appearing and disappearing rose
Amanda Flicop yes!! Ive watched it on slowmotion multiple times and I still cant catch it
They probably cut to another recording of a different show where the rose didn’t pop up. There’s no way she could have put it back in her sash so quickly haha

@@dazedEllie its on Alice's dress you can clearly see it when she is on the table with Hatter when Hatter's hat on her feet specifically
Elethea Aubbrian what’s the timestamp on that part? :)
We will do a ballet of alice in wonderland!!!
Hatter: cool!!!! Imma tap dance in it.
2:52 Micheal Jackson ain’t got nothing on this woman!
Lol
Yesss
The tapping acting as the ticking of the clock always has me in awe
I like how this Alice just decides to go along with the madness.
Damn, mad hatter is smoking 😍. That jawline, that hot look in his eyes. Somebody help me, I'm dying.
I didn’t recognize the mad hatter as Steven McRae and I was wondering why I find him so attractive
May I say the hatter is madly attractive
And the tap fits his character PERFECTLY🤩
演者さんも衣装も大掛かりな舞台道具も全てが素敵でたまらない。
みんなかわいい…
なんて最高なアリス。
Да,согласна! Красиво и интересно. 🙂💖🕊💫🩰👑🫖😻
Kapa dolje Ludom Klobučaru, ukrao je show
What an excellent choreography choice to have him tap dance when the other characters are all dancing ballet. Such a creative and effective way to emphasize the eccentricity of the character.
I love the SASS in that walk-off at the end
I like this Mad Hatter way better than Depp’s
SAME
Eh, I LOVE both :>
Lauren looks like she's genuinely having fun while doing this! And who wouldn't? It looks like so much fun if you know pointe very well.
I love the costume design for the Mad Hatter, his suit jacket and vest almost tell a story if you look closely enough. Plus, the stitching on the vest from what I can see looks vintage, or at the very least was embroidered to look so
The freaking move at 2:06 is just epic
I refuse to believe that's Steven McRae. He's completely unrecognizable!
This is my favorite part of the ballet,, the way they portrayed the hatter was brilliant in every way possible and the choreography is amazing.
Come for the taps, stay for Steven McRae.
I don't know how many times I've watched this but it NEVER gets old. He's just so good.
I feel like having the mad hatter as a tap dancer in a ballet is actually a really good representation of his character
As always, Steven is flawless.
This is such an easy clip to become obsessed with... I've watched it well over thirty times myself... but I even showed this to my young cousin (7 years old) and he started singing some of the melody at me later in the day and trying to dance. It was adorable. We ended up watching it again together.
It must be my unbirthday, I never thought I'd see this!
The choreography is truly stunning. I love the addition of tap. I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s perfect for the Mad Hatter. And wow, isn’t he just gorgeous!

underrated comment
@@lovekenmaforlife3406 yes i also love kenma hes my lil pudding head baby
I died xDDD
I busted up laughing holy shit
I’ve watched this an unhealthy amount of times
Haven’t we all?
Same here.
The tap shoes were such a great choice
This choreography is so fantastic. I love seeing something so fresh and new and creative!!!✨
0:55 I'm wondering if the March Hare ever dropped the teapot
Combining ballet and tapdance is pure genius
My Sport teacher: Can you dance something from a Ballet?
Me: Jes.
Teacher: Show me!
Me and three of my friends: 3:50
Teacher: Am I a joke to you? I said BALLET! 😑
Me: Welcome to the 21th century ballett😏
Natascha Klein
*ballet
Why would your sport teacher be talking about ballet and asking someone to demonstrate before teaching anything? Giving off some serious r/thathappened vibes here...
Random Guy pretty sure it’s just a poorly made joke my guy, not a story of something that happened
@@renidere True. Tho our new sport teacher likes to ask at the beginning of a new topic if someone can demonstrate something to the others
@@lilithh6196 Sorry. My phone likes to autocorrecting words in my language a thousand time, cause in my mother language we write "ballett" and not "ballet". Gonna correct it now
I have watched this like 100 times and it still never gets boring. Adding tap for the mad hatter into a ballet was a henius idea!
Amazing tapping from Steven McRae such a talented performer
Why do I just find it adorable that the table is also a stage?
Right??! And it's so perfect for the Hatter, who's just a really zany ADD guy in this who gets mad when people don't pay him enough attention :D
Gosh the amount of dexterity and strength needed to pull off those clean stops ✨ chef's kiss ✨
That tap dancing in this was incredible! The funniest parts is when The Mad Hatter and the March Hare kept putting the Dormouse back in the teapot!! It was like "Get back in there!!"
after watching the rehearsal for this part and seeing this stunning jump and freeze 4:05 I hope I can watch their performance live in person soon.
I adore the tap...it's part of the music. Like the ticking of an insane clock.
I look foward to a future where these glimpses of beauty I catch watching videos of this ballet become the color and variety for all to enjoy.
Lauren's bourrées backwards give me anxiety every time I watch this- she makes them look so easy! what an amazing dancer!
They’re fantastic bourrées, and so unlike what we see in the era of extremely highly arched feet. They’re powdery, as those of many dancers of the Royal Ballet were in the ‘60’s and ‘70s, I think.
Can you please upload the entire ballet? I really wanna see it.
You can find the entire ballet on vimeo if you search it on google

You need to pirate it mate :)
You can find the DVDs on ebay now!
This was so chaotic as it should be. I love it.
The music reminds me a lot of Coraline, with the mice circus part.
amandazar - OMG YAS
I was thinking that too, I'm in a Alice In Wonderland Ballet and I heard some of the music in the show and I thought 'o boi that sounds like Coraline and Celeste music'
Oh shoot that why this seemed kinda familiar
Every time TH-cam recommends this video I can never watch it only once. Such an addictive routine to watch.
tap and ballet together take such an astounding amount of skill! Look light as a feather in the air, come down hard to do the taps, and make it all look absolutely efforless!!!! Amazing.
I have this full ballet on dvd, it’s so amazing and different.
I like the kitchen scene, it's like Stephen King with music!
There's a DVD?? Alright, that's going on my wish list.
I love the accentuating of the music by the stepshoes.
And what a timing it takes, for this choreography.
High respect! Flying teapot and all....
2:29 is the way I approach new friends.
2:53 I’m still trying to figure out how Alice moved so fast without falling
Years and years of training and practice
Practice 40 hours a day
She's so in rhythm with the tap dance that it look like she's the one making the sound 😭
