  • How to produce hydrogen and oxgen from water|Electrolysis of water|How to make hydrogen and oxygen gas
In this video I am going to show you electrolysis of water .(oxygen and hydrogen)
Electrolysis of water is the decomposition of water into oxygen(1/2) and hydrogen gas(1) due to the flow of an electric current. It is also called water splitting.
An electrical power source(DC 9V) is connected to two electrodes(cathode and anode)which are placed in the water. Hydrogen will appear at the cathode (the negatively charged electrode), and oxygen will appear at the anode (the positively charged electrode). Assuming ideal faradaic efficiency, the amount of hydrogen generated is twice the amount of oxygen, and both are proportional to the total electrical charge conducted by the solution.
    Chemical Reaction
    Cathode (reduction): 2 H2O(l) + 2e− → H2(g) + 2 OH−(aq)
    Anode (oxidation): 2 OH−(aq) → 1/2 O2(g) + H2O(l) + 2 e−
    Overall reaction: 2 H2O(l) → 2 H2(g) + O2(g)
    Things Needed
    Water
    Beaker
    Test tubes
    Graphite rods
    9V battery
    Sulphuric acid (few drops)

The water must be ionized. After ionization, H + and OH - ions form in water. To ionize water l added 2 drops of acid.

Replace those carbon electrodes with electrodes of coiled platinum wire and you'll have Grove's Gas Voltaic Battery, a primitive hydrogen fuel cell! Once the tubes are filled with hydrogen and oxygen, disconnect the 9v battery and connect a load, such as a voltmeter or LED across the electrodes of tubes. The gasses will begin to be consumed, generating electric current.
