Sorry, there are too many other parts that affect chain line to make this a viable option. There is tolerance in the following: Engine mounts in frame, swing arm pivots, swingarm length, block adjusters, etc. I get marks close on both sides and then sight down the chain to see if both sprockets are in line. There can be a buildup of tolerances to really through this method off.
Does it work for every bike? I mean I understand that these bolts should be equal and completely the same but I can't believe it's so genially simple.

I do it with an analog caliper. With in 3-4 thousands of an inch.
