I'm a big big KTM fan, but something a bit overlooked if you are thinking about buying a newer 890 or find a used 790 is that they changed the slip mode between the models. On the 790 when you put it in slip 1 it's about the same as slip 3-4 on the 890. I find riding in sand on my 790 I actually stop and turn the slip completely off but when riding 890s in sand I can keep it on slip 1 and get enough push on the rear. I have a short video on my channel showing me going up a sand hill in 2nd gear with 1 slip on the 790 and you can hear how much the slip is pushing back.
Great video! Love my 790. Their Achilles heal however is the plastic L shaped fitting that connects the fuel line to the bottom of the fuel pump. I was able to break this by dropping the bike on a water bar mid hill climb and it left me stranded in the woods. A must for these bikes is either a skid plate that covers high on the tank (like AXP) or the aluminum replacement fitting and guard that Rottweiler makes. Tank itself is going strong through
I pined for a T7 when they teased it several years back to replace my DR650. Then KTM came out with the 790 R. The T7 suddenly became not much of an upgrade performance wise to my modded DR but the KTM was so much more. I'm approaching 20 K miles on my 2020 and it has been stone reliable. The offroad performance is fantastic and on road it rips for 'only' a 790. No regrets! Only hope it remains reliable for years to come. Continued luck and enjoyment with yours!
I have a 2019 ktm 790R since new, only 12 thousand miles on it but it has been very mechanically sound, never back to the dealer. There are small things like the hard starting issue, which I'm about to fix with a fuel X lite, for 200 bucks, but the power and suspension is just awesome. I could never go down to a lesser powered bike, it would just be boring. Some want extreme reliability but I want a bike that rips, both on the street and single track, to each their own, as long as you're having fun, stay safe.
GREAT video - Emily you are very credible not just because of your experience and background, but also because you explain so logically and well = THANKS!!!
I went from a Pan Am (too many issues) to a 1290 SAR. My 1st KTM. The bike is awesome but it's huge... and I'm not. I can only tip toe on the bike. The 1290 has shown me that I really love the KTM engine and performance levels. @ 5'8" and around a 30.5" inseam you've given me some great information and I'll be looking for an 790 or 890R.
I didn't want to purchase a KTM. i certainly didn't want to purchase a 790 and i was afraid about all the reliabilities concerns on the Brand. One time, i tried the bike just for fun and thought it was a super bike but too strong for me. During a bike show including KTM, i tried it again and started to fall in love. When the agent gave me a super price for the bike, i gave up and purchased it. I have now made 1200 kilometers which have been pure joy. Don't get me wrong, she is not perfect. There are some glitches like idle difficult to find, legs cooked well done by the radiator blowers, software glitches at start, famous KTM comfort, short windscreen but overall this is has been so far good. My first week end trip with her had only a sore ass after too many hours on the saddle but that was worth it.
Still a KTM my experience very unreliable in the outback . especially by yourself . And little shops don't want to work on them . To each their own. RIDE ON
I had the KTM 990 and the KTM 690, both great bikes. How ever when I bought my Yamaha T7 I found it just fit. Yep I agree. it is not a high tech race ready bike. But I am almost sixty one and find it suits my needs. I think each bike has its strengths. One should be honest with themselves on their skill level. I have only been riding and racing 46 yrs. I have ridden my T7 on the same trails as My 690 and more trails than the 990
Another quality video buddy! seems like KTM/Husky is taking over the dirt world these days.. I know of at least 6 new buys amongst 4 riders lately. great bikes with big power for the sizes. looking forward to spring rolling in next year to get back out on the trails!!!
I hit a deer with my 890R, on the gas tank (mostly) as well. Did no damage the tank, though I needed a new radiator and several plastic panels. Radiator didn't leak and I was able to ride home, but it was all bent up.
Did you also install a lowering kit on it? Stock form it's about 86cm seat hight which is a lot. Ofc you can have a lower seat which gets you to about 84cm but at your hight prolly is either one leg or the other on the ground on tippy-toes.
well. first anyone with short inseam and experience riding enduro bikes will tell you one foot on the ground is not a problem, so much so that I never use two feet even on low street bikes. after getting comfortable with it, it's just an all around better way to stop, and especially to dab - and it's always better to dab and stay on the pegs than to waddle with your feet offroad. anyway two feet is an impossibility for us short inseam riders in enduro anyways, on pretty much any bike, even with huge suspension compromises. and I found that short CoG and slim seat profile + bike profile are MUCH more important for being able to comfortably use one foot. my GF would struggle on pretty much any mid-weight adv bike, but with my 790r it's really not a problem for her or for me (I also have short inseam). and low seat I find doesn't really help and feels about the same as stock R model seat because it's slightly wider. being comfortable with balance and dabbing makes riding 790r with stock height suspension a pleasure, it gives you confidence and I now never worry about it even though I struggle on pretty much any other mid+ adv bike. only other options are all single-cylinder like 690/500.
The KTM 790/890 is a brilliant design, great suspension and weight distribution. Had the T7 for 8mths, great engine but top heavy, suspension needed alot of work. I would buy the 790 in a heartbeat but the complexity worries me. Reliability has been a concern, camshaft wear notably. This is an adventure bike, if reliability is in question then the concept of real adventure is compromised. The 690 although not as highway capable is now my choice, in the dirt it will be superior to the 790. Great looking bike those graphics really set it off.
I’m looking at a 701 and I’m a member of a few fb groups. The horror I read about the 690/701 scares the heck out of me lol. At the same time, I can fix the clutch slave and shift star easily so….fuck it really. Life is short
I went from a Tenere 700 to an 890 Adventure R. Did over 10,000km on each and now I'm getting a 500EXC. I know the highway riding will suffer but it's boring on any bike.
I had a 790 2019. I ve done 45000 miles on it...only stupid things for problems..like trasudation of fog on TFT, when out there is FOG..but you have a bike with the power of a 1000cc bikes, with the weight of a t7..790 is a modetn bike, has an inertial plattform (t7 only a preistoric abs). 790 is a sport bike, and in a bike i look smiles and adrenalin...anyway if you would have to change a single camshaft, how do you think you have to spend. On mine in 45000mls only oils and tires. The termic part is strong, like an ild bike
How’s those Chinese Camshafts in the Kato, because they’re giving KTM a very hard PR job , at the moment , although to be fair mainly in parallel twins not the classic V-Twins , but they are definitely killing the KTM name & vibe.
my very first bike is exactly the same KTM what you have, and I love it, have to mention have a MTB background , so transition wasn't that difficult even I was 52 years old and I never rode anything before, what a fun machine, your review was exactly what I would say..... cheers V!
You mixed up MSC and MTC, rally mode doesn't turn off MTC, it turns off MSC which reduces excessive torque drag (like a slipper clutch). It's MTC that remains active and manually selectable from 1-9, only relocating the rear abs sensor to the front disables MTC completely
I had to watch the video again, it's been a year since I posted the comment 😂 Yes switching it off in the menu is meant to disable it, unlike MTC which still has some tiny effect on the bottom setting. I have heard of people complaining that with MSC switched off they still get MSC failure banner pop up after prolonged spinning of the rear wheel whilst the front is stationary. I disabled the MTC and MSC completely along with removing the abs. It's nice now to feel what the rear is doing when changing down hard and easier to back it into a corner as the tyre breaks traction. On the dirt it works way better for me, feels like a proper dirt bike. On the Duke i also don't like the KTM electronic interaction on the track, changing the OEM slipper for an old school simple slipper only assembly works way better. The abs is a liability off road and on the track, in certain circumstances it's nearly caused me to crash and after 40+ years of bikes without it, I was glad when it was gone. I've removed over 55lb in dead weight from my 890, had TTM factory fully rework the suspension. Narrowed the bike 4" with the twin rally tanks and now it really feels like the bike KTM should have brought to the market. Nice vid, I was diggin the blast though the deep sand 😎
Beautiful bike! I have a 2020 KTM 690 Enduro R now. I’m really tempted to trade for one of these. I’m 71 years old, and I need a low seat and center of gravity, due to issues with my legs (old age). Thanks for posting this. ♥️🏍️
hey man just to let you know, 790 never feels lighter than 690. it does sometimes feel almost as light as 690, and that's the great accomplishment, but 690 still trumps it offroad with ease, especially in jumps, stopping distance with limited traction, confidence downhill/uphill etc. in slow riding I feel keeping balance is about equally easy/hard. i would only switch if you want more street comfort. for reference I rode 690 + 1190 and now switched a couple of years ago to 790r and exc500. if I was touring with a passenger i'd keep the big vtwin though.
Reliability...I have a 2019 790 Duke since new, made in Austria and have not had 1 single issue with the bike. Also have a 2015 250SX and haven't had problems with it either other than wearing out the rings from normal use, rebuilt the top end 2 years ago. On the track or single track it is as fast as my CR500.
I looked into the 890 adventure r before purchasing my tenere 700..the ktm motor sounds like it has marbles in it.the tanks are way wide and the electric rider aids are having some glitches..and the 890 r is a tall bike as well can't say anything about the 790 because there not made any more..I personally prefer simplicity it makes a better rider plus with the 5k I saved by buy the t7 I could easily buy the best suspension if choose

No wonder she felt the T7 suspension needed an upgrade, if she didn't even know what kind of adjustability the suspension has. Not to mention adjusting it. Of course the suspension is bad when you leave it to factory settings.
This adventure bike mania sprawled a lot of “instructors” and reviewers who really don’t have an in depth knowledge of motorcycles. Hence their reviews on the bikes are useless. Long term ownership review “1000 miles”…. Etc.
Just because information was omitted, don’t assume someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Emily is not only a seasoned rider, but also knows bikes inside and out. She grew up around motorcycles, (probably learning how to ride one before walking), competes, and is a professional journalist for a motorcycle magazine. Doesn't matter what suspension adjustments you make to the T7 it will never have a plush ride. It is sporty though and handles surprisingly well on the road. It's firm from stock.

Si hiciera motocicletas sin fallos se comería el mercado, tampoco en el campo necesitamos tanta tecnologia y lucecitas, necesitamos buenos motores fuertes y fiables, no hace falta ser rapido si no llegar al destino
The KTM is a great bike, except...once your camshafts, valves and followers fail at low km you'll struggle to trust it to carry you out in the wilderness. When twice as many services as the owner's manual calls for equals complete head rebuild with nasty cam at 31,000km you can no longer trust it. There are so many cases now its absurd, I wont own another KTM, nor would I suggest anyone deliberately put yourself through having KTM treat you like using their bike for its intended purpose is somehow detrimental to their bike.

Yeah it actually just popped right back in after the jump. Riley said it would pop out from time to time on bigger jumps and then just pop back in
He has also changed the signal lights since filming that
I pined for a T7 when they teased it several years back to replace my DR650.
First time seeing Emily other than print, happy to see you found your best bike match. Keep doing what you do. Respecting your work & choices.
Here for the dramatic reenactment 🙌😂
Thank you Larry! And I will second that, Emily is amazing and explaining and laying out information
Yamaha lovers always watching KTM videos. KTM lovers never watch Yamaha videos😂
Welcome to the KTM family
One of the most exciting bikes ive ridden.
I ended up trading the 1290 for an 890 Adventure non-R model. So far it feels like my Goldilocks motorcycle.
Hola! Amazing video! Pretty informative as well, thanks for sharing. Can you share @10:40 what is that amazing suit? Looks awesome.
Hey! Thank you. That is an Aerostitch suit, they are amazing and made to fit each rider.

I’m not sponsored by them I promise haha
RIDE ON
Had the T7 for 2 years & 20,000 km but never really got on with it off road, much too top heavy.....Now have a Husky 701.....much better.
Love the 701!
Thanks Troy! I think as far as performance and tech they are really leading the way. Yeah we are almost halfway through winter then we can ride again!
Just like the other video, this was great. Could I ask you which drone you're using for these videos?
Thanks man, for this video I used a DJI air 2s, nice small compact drone. For the tenere video I used a DJI inspire pro
Bike looks good in white! Great video!
Doesn’t it? She designed that wrap off old factory ktm race bikes from the 80’s
great film location love it up there Revy is so nice year round .mint vid. ill stick with my T7 and my 2020
500 exc-f 6 days for now
The KTM 790/890 is a brilliant design, great suspension and weight distribution.
How’s those Chinese Camshafts in the Kato, because they’re giving KTM a very hard PR job ,
at the moment ,
although to be fair mainly in parallel twins not the classic V-Twins , but they are definitely killing the KTM name & vibe.
Love the graphic change!
my very first bike is exactly the same KTM what you have, and I love it, have to mention have a MTB background , so transition wasn't that difficult even I was 52 years old and I never rode anything before, what a fun machine, your review was exactly what I would say..... cheers V!
What an awesome first bike!
Beautiful country you are riding in. Is that BC? I don’t know anywhere in the lower 48 that looks like that.
Sure is BC!
Thats true slam deeper foot pegs on it and a handle bar riser and it will fit even wirh 6'5". But maybe i will gonna go For a higher seat
What a great video! TY!!!!
You’re very welcome!
You mixed up MSC and MTC, rally mode doesn't turn off MTC, it turns off MSC which reduces excessive torque drag (like a slipper clutch). It's MTC that remains active and manually selectable from 1-9, only relocating the rear abs sensor to the front disables MTC completely
doesn't turning off mtc in the menu completely disable it? i mean I can keep the wheel spinning in the sand as much as I like I feel
for the record, i don't mean setting TC to 1 in rally mode, I mean disabling it completely in the menu like abs.
I had to watch the video again, it's been a year since I posted the comment 😂
Yes switching it off in the menu is meant to disable it, unlike MTC which still has some tiny effect on the bottom setting.
Wie oft hat der dreibuchstabige Paripa dann auf dem langen und schwierigen Gelände Fehler gemacht? Bereit zum Rennen ...
Where are they riding in this video?
This is BC, Canada. In the Revelstoke area
@6:10 you killed Bambi? With a little motorcycle, good storyteller.
Did you ever try a bmw f800gs ?
I looked into the 890 adventure r before purchasing my tenere 700..the ktm motor sounds like it has marbles in it.the tanks are way wide and the electric rider aids are having some glitches..and the 890 r is a tall bike as well can't say anything about the 790 because there not made any more..I personally prefer simplicity it makes a better rider plus with the 5k I saved by buy the t7 I could easily buy the best suspension if choose
Every time the T700 stall you have to press again the OFF road button, it's not simplicity. It is pain in the ass. In 2023 model it is even worst.
@@woitika5983 what do mean stall? My t7 has never stalled!!!
@@gabrielkopp2036 stall happens when there is not enough power to fed from the engine to the rear wheel to get it moving or keep your bike rolling and that happens when you ride offroad. And apart of that whenever you leave tarmac and start off road riding you have to stop the bike to press the button, it is not simplicity :-(
@@woitika5983 either you have no idea what your talking about or don't know how to use the clutch..my t7 has never stalled and I have never heard anyone else's ever sralling
In my part of the world a near new 790 was less than a T7
@2:48 the t7 broke blinker strikes again
Those rear turn lamps took some beating
What happens once the warranty runs out though, those discs don't seem fit for purpose to me, are ktm expecting you to pick up the bill ? ... great bikes though 👌
Yeah good question, I would imagine if they failed again and you were out of warranty you would source a different brand of rotor and see how that goes.
10/10 for the dramatic re-enactment. lol Regarding seat height, what is your inseam? You look like you have a longer than average inseam for someone that is 5'5". Inseam is a better indicator, IMO, for for sizing rather than the actual height.
yeah but still there's no better twin-cylinder adv bike for us short-inseam riders, due to the slim profile and low CoG
@@EugeneYunak I didn't make any comments about the bikes.
Thanks for this vid, been wating for it 🤙🤙🤙 and whoever was upset with one persons choice of what bike they like, is BS! What does it matter what bike someone chooses, its thier choice.
Im glad you found it! I was gonna track down that comment and tell you it was out haha.
@@rangeroadmoto 😂 i appreciate that, it notified me it was out and its a great video and damn she is a beast on that bike. Got me wanting the new 790 adv. Looking forward to your future vids 🤙.
i don't get it. a KTM with BMW Mpower stickers on it? why?
Those are KTM’s colours from the 80’s.
She’s the real deal, not just another “instructor” or influencer selling bikes for commissions.
Doesn't matter what suspension adjustments you make to the T7 it will never have a plush ride. It is sporty though and handles surprisingly well on the road. It's firm from stock.
The KTM is not plush either
@@dudeqc514 what about the Africa twin.
Thanks WOW THAT'S AWESOME 👍
Great info!
That bike is beautiful 👌 nice choice Em!!
I had the 890R and now have a Tenere 700. Much happier with the T7.
KTM cam lobe wear bugs me. 2 brake rotors! Think you maybe ride harder than I would be? Good VID!
Yeah you’re not alone with that!
I like the KTM numberplate mount…😃
the price difference may determine which one one would buy...
That is true, although in the used market they seem to be very close with how much people around asking for their Teneres
Excellent production value. Looks like maybe State of Washington. Nice work.
Thanks! This is really similar terrain, but up in British Columbia.

KTM sold the 790 engine and it's platform to CFmoto and is now going to be released in America as the 800 Advetura .
I was seriously looking at a new T7. Then I realized I could get a year old 890 R with 1,500 miles for the same price as a new T7. So that's what I did.
if they only manage to fix all the small and annoying reliability issues it would be the perfect bike...for the moment the KTM is just a nice toy to go in the backyard playground
Have you owned a KTM?
@@erwindenengelsen8144 yes a 990SuperMoto and on 250cc 2 strokes converted to supermoto for track use only. I bought an old 93 Africa twin to travel as the 990 was spending more time to the mechanic than on the road.
That music is so ITCHY 😆😆
I have a love hate relationship with ktm. I love it so much. I hate how much I love it. Until I break a tiny piece of metal and have to refinance my mortgage to replace it. But I’ve driven 22000 km this season so far and I have only needed 5 new rear tires 3 front, and fork seals.
Oh no... not bambi...
Any who... once you go ktm, you ain't going back to jay pan bikes. 690r is the unicorn bike, 890r is the best adventure bike ever, 1290r is the mile muncher bike. Can't wait till the 390r....
Absolute insanity, she RIPS. Wow that was awesome to see

especially knowing that a used ktm is the same price as a used T7.
Riley is an awesome rider! Where do I find a gal like that?! 😊🇺🇸🍻
Ok, so now I am confused between bikes again..LOL
Haha I just read your other comment, honestly man they are both awesome bikes. I rode the T7 after we were filming and it felt good. And the KTM is a serious machine..you gotta go with what feels best. I don’t think you would regret either bike. They are both awesome
Nice video. I Have Tenere 700😉
Nice! I rode Riley’s while I was filming with him. Really nice bike.
from the day that KTM turned down Long Way Round crew request to provide them with the bike by saying : “we think they’re not gonna make it” I knew they know how unreliable is this bike so they don’t want to admit it in a documentary by testing it . Not saying it’s not a good bike . It is but it’s mechanic friendly .
th-cam.com/video/63eWDd-Uj7c/w-d-xo.html
Reliability has scares me away from ktm. I wanted an 890r so badly
Meh, life is too short to be 'scared' of something like that. I buy bikes that I find exciting and capable, so KTM takes up 2 spots in my current stable. No issues with either of them.
Top scenery
I would like to own BOTH of these models within my Lifetime. 🙂
Until I have money and more skill, Yamaha (if you are watching) can you please make me a T3 (aka a T321) LoL.

T700 is better for countries where premium fuel is problem .. nd for me i ride 1100l quite heavy but best at what it does and what my skill set offers me .. some time i think why Europeans and Americans buy Yamaha t700 or any other Japanese bikes when they have all the other brands that r equally better ...
При такой езде нет разницы какой байк.
Excellent story telling :) Reliability of T7 is better than KTM´s, Yamaha motor produced in Japan but maybe not assembled in Japan. Will see how KTM´s reliability is in new 790. April Tuareg has also reliability issues, then again there is not going to be a perfect bike. I agree about height and top heaviness. Will wait for some time before purchasing new model of any bike.
They definitely aren’t without their problems that’s for sure
This is a paid promo, reporting it as such. Why don’t you mention the failed camshaft club !?
Desert x > everything else
The KTM is a great bike, except...once your camshafts, valves and followers fail at low km you'll struggle to trust it to carry you out in the wilderness.
When twice as many services as the owner's manual calls for equals complete head rebuild with nasty cam at 31,000km you can no longer trust it.
There are so many cases now its absurd, I wont own another KTM, nor would I suggest anyone deliberately put yourself through having KTM treat you like using their bike for its intended purpose is somehow detrimental to their bike.
This is interesting to hear, I’m current working on a video about wether or not the ktm890/790 is worth the headaches it brings.
Emily is actually most likely going to sell hers as it has spent more time in the shop than on the road. My friend Riley ( from the tenere 700 video) just sold his 2023 ktm adventure R because he didn’t trust it.
Did you have the camshaft issue yourself or is it just internet buzz ? We had only one case in Philippines. There is no denial it can happen but I cannot find any meaningful statistics on this. All bikes can have a problem even Japanese but is it really a big problem for all KTM bikes or only very bad luck?
Mine failed at 30,900km, full duplicate detailed service history@@edouardl2
@@edouardl2 mine failed, 30,900km with double the required services.
@@blairknight7793 Only reason I purchased a 790 was because of 45% discount which should cover the shaft expense if it happens. Hmmmmm but the KTM is made in China.. Are you comfortable with that???
Is this one entirely made in China? I know the new 790 coming out next year is entirely made there but I think this bike is still assembled in Austria with some Chinese components.
Anyone on here know for sure, I poked around a little one day trying to figure it out but couldn’t get definitive answers.
@@rangeroadmoto My understanding is with this model they are all made in China.. More reliability problems...
Well from what I understand they made the 790 models pre 2023 in Austria, bust they just announced that a Chinese bike builder called CFMoto is gonna be making like a re-released version of the same bike. It seems like a really weird money grab. But it’s hard to find concrete info one what’s made where ..
@@rangeroadmoto its true the info is arbitrary and not too solid. Some of my research states that the 790 production actually started in China in 2019/2020 and some states that it will start in 2023. That being said they have a history of reliability problems which will only get worse with the move to China. And for $15 to $16 k??? keep me posted. I personally have had very good luck with my Aprilia Tuono in the past and will be getting a 660 Tuareg. I like the intake for the air box being clear up above the steering head, Down in Central America There are many rivers that will swamp a under seat intake.
I’m thinking KTM’s made in China might be a good research project and later video 🤔
The Aprillia looks amazing, I would love to try one out. And I’ve seen some of those rain storms in Costa Rica, a high intake would definitely be a good thing to have!

Meh.
T7 is bad enginered and the worst is suspension. Any adjustments not change that. Its like with good tv, if you bought good tv, first what you do, you turn off all acceleration setting and image is great. On bad tv you have hope thal all that fancy settings change something but after a few weeks of strugle you know that you have garbage tv. Tenere 700 is all garbage. All thing you have to pay on your own to change and still you have top havy, overheating, bad enginered motorcycle. Very overpriced garbage.
Your ingesting too much Psilocybin. All KTM's overheat.
This woman is annoying, you want to try an old school tenere from the 80s, that's top heavy!!!
You want nimble get a decent enduro committed bike like a wr or xc..
I hope thats not how you start conversations with strangers in real life.. jeepers buddy.
And yes there are more top heavy bikes in existence. That was never an argument. If you've sat on a 790/890 compared to a T7 you would feel the difference. Being more top heavy shouldn't be a point of pride for an off highway capable bike.
As for getting a nimble enduro bike, I think her 300 GasGas is treating her pretty well.
What a mistake..... T7 owns that KTM garbage. From a Honda owner.
Why’s that?
