- Are school uniforms good or bad? Do school uniforms help students learn? I'll present my pros and cons of school uniforms and then you can tell me in the comments below: are school uniforms a good or bad idea? Let the school uniform debate begin!
For ease of use, I'll also put my personal list of pros and cons here in the description. I think school uniform cons, as principles, outweigh the school uniform pros, so the cons come first, then the pros. Here you go!
CONs of school uniforms:
-Uniforms put you one step closer to being a prisoner
-With a uniform, you must submit to yet another layer of conformity (School seeks to destroy the individual)
-Uniforms force you to give up your creative expression (if fashion matters to you; another way schools kill creativity)
-Uniforms reduce a student's sense of personal responsibility. It's a big milestone when a kid learns to pick out his or her own clothes and dress himself. The school uniform removes that responsibility and helps create a group of kids who grow up to be dependent on an outside authority.
-Uniforms add nothing to the educational value of school; they only make it easier for the administration to control the students
PROs of school uniforms:
-You don't have to think about what you're going to wear to school
-In theory, no one should be picked on for what clothes they're wearing
-No one should get in trouble for inappropriate clothing
-Easier back to school shopping
-Can be cheaper than regular clothes if your school uniform is basic like khakis and a polo shirt
-Uniforms can prevent the display of gang colors

+C001 DUDE That's exactly what I read when I was making this video. In some areas, the uniforms can wind up costing 2x the price of normal clothes, but now the parents are forced to buy the uniforms!
C001 DUDE as someone who has worn a uniform I can prove this false. I’ve been to several schools with uniforms and none of them have been as expensive as your saying. Buying fancy clothes for school especially how much people by is much more expensive then buying a uniform.
CapOhTV in my school the blazer costs £150 the jumper is £60 school trousers £40 the shoes are £60 and the school shirt is £10 at the end of the day if u cancel the amount of pairs u have 2 pay it'll cost u £320

C001 DUDE I agree. That point is always made about uniforms but the blazers are over £100, ties are £15, jumpers are £25. And let's not get started on the whole pe kit chaos. Uniforms are ridiculously expensive. Normal clothes that you only really need 10 sets of are much cheaper than the whole uniform
In my school, not only do we have to wear uniforms, but we also can't wear jewelry, hats, jackets, boots, headbands, piercings, and we have to have our hair up if it's long enough.

Back in the day in my school you could wear pretty much strap-on dildo if you so choose. School uniforms doesn't encourage you to think for yourself and especially teenagers should be trying out different things to form solid identity.

I wear a hat to school despite not alloweding caps. Cause I dont care, the teacher (most of them don't care) and no other student cares except for the occasional annyoing ones.
I've worn a uniform my whole life and now that I'm in high school at the beginning I didn't know how to put clothes together because I just wore the same thing every day. I had to ask my friends for help because I was totally clueless about fashion since I never had he chance before.

School uniforms are bad and it's uncomfortable because I sweat while taking the bus home I hate sweating in my uniform and it sucks also its a pain to press or iron and the ministry of education forced us to have a perfect uniform condition and it sucks

School uniforms are way too expensive too just for a solid color and you need to buy other clothing for weekends and stuff like that so because of school uniforms parents have to spend like twice the money

BS!!! Without uniforms you and your kids go the the stores and pick out the latest fashion clothing which is already expensive. Now the kids wear those clothes all over the place and ware them out faster than a set of clothes used JUST for school. So guess what? In the middle of the school year you have to go out and buy new clothes again. i don't think school uniforms are a good idea because it wont prevent bullying! a bully wont stop bullying just because of an outfit change! most likely they would bully others about more hurtful things like their weight and how pretty they are! also kids cant express themselves the same way! they are also SUPER expensive and kids won't touch them unless they have to! plus think of the weather! boys, do you want your legs to be burning in the hot seasons when you cant wear shorts? and girls, think of winter when that knee length skirt flaps in the wind, practically freezing your legs! i'm SO thankful that i don't have to wear them
Stopping one avenue of bullying is better than none at all. This is a learning institution, kids can wear whatever they like out of it.
I’ve been a subject to weight bullying it was quite embarrassing cause my mom never bought me more uniforms so they were all tight or too short for my height

@@starknight103 Actually, they're remarkably good concept, we just haven't spent the proper time and money on the idea. In the long term, private schools will become inefficient, and the government schools will take over.
@@koolmckool7039 then explain why many people think, Steiner, Sudbury and Montessori schools are much better than those traditional public schools. In fact many reports say that Montessori method is superior to traditional Prussian method used in most countries except Finland.

I honestly hate school uniforms. In elementary and middle school I had to wear a white collared shirt and khaki pants. I’m in high school now and I haven’t touched any of those clothes ever since.

I think there should be uniforms but like 3 different choices for everyday so not everybody will look the same and all of the uniform in total will cost 50$ not that bad
There are pros and cons to school uniform, i don't think its inherently a bad thing but I wouldn't say for me personally, it isn't a great thing either because you are not able to embrace your individuality through your clothing choices and accessories. However, it greatly reduces bullying as well because lets say for example if you wear something that a lot of people don't agree with then it might start up bullying and teasing because of what you choose to wear. If everyone is wearing the same uniform then you don't really have anything to say because everyone is the same.
Another thing is that you don't have as much pressure to wear different clothing choices every single day because its stressful and sometimes you don't know what you want to wear. Also it might cause some conformity issues because lets say for example almost everyone wants to wear this 'insert item here' because its on trend, you may feel that your pressured to wear it like everyone else because maybe you want to fit in with the rest of the people or you feel like if you don't wear it then you will be the odd one out. School uniform tackles both of these issues.
So i don't completely disagree with the idea with school uniform but.. it just depends how well a school designs it. If its tacky or boring then its not even worthy of the title 'school uniform'. Especially in the summer when your wearing a school uniform its make the whole day harder because their quite stuffy as well.

ok, so here's a list for back to school uniform shopping (from my school)-
2 white shirts
2 blue shirts
1 house shirt
2 pairs of blue socks (one thigh length and one knee length)
1 pair of white socks
1 pair of black ribbons (for the students above grade 4)
1 pair of white sports shoes (has to look the same as the other students)
1 pair of black shoes (needs to have a buckle and round edged)
2 house brooches
1 house belt
1 blue skirt
1 white skirt
1 band uniform (I'm in the band)- white shirt, red skirt, bow tie and a hat
1 scouts uniform (if you're in the scouts)-IDK
1 singing uniform (I'm in the sining group)- white shirt, black pencil skirt, tights, and black ankle high shoes
of course there are more uniforms for the different dance groups as well.
And yes we have to buy these almost ever year.
And yes the other uniforms are to be bought at their own respective stores.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the cardigan, the coat, the muffler, gloves and stockings for the winter season.
BTW 1 shirt costs more than 10 dollars

I’ve actually found that uniforms make clothes cheaper! Because most kids are kind of forcing other people to get those “trendy” clothes or else you get bullied. Most of those trendy clothes (Nike, adidas, idk Gucci) can cost ALOT of money, sure uniforms are bloody expensive too but not as much. Plus it DOES actually make bullying less common, I’d say I’ve never been bullied in my life apart from online and I’m one the weird ones, not many of my freinds have been super bullied either. And I did a mini servey. THEY HAVNT EITHER, so yes you can bully other ways but I find most just don’t bother. Is that because if uniforms being mandatory in Aus or Australians just being nicer idk, but it is food for thought

School uniforms a piss poor solution to the actual problem which is socioeconomic bullying. What are they going to do as adults? And it also doesn't teach children that brand worshiping is bad. It also does not take into account trans students and non-binary students and ability to express parts of their gender.
Thanks for the video. Just a point about having a uniform it helps to separate you from work and relax mood i.e when you are in your uniform you are working and when you are in your own clothes you are relaxing. This I believe this sets you up for adulthood when you wear work clothes at your job and then wear your casual cloths at home or the weekend.

I went to private schools all my life, and one of them had a uniform. For shirts, there was a spirit shirt, which you could only wear on Monday, and a red polo since the school's color is red, and you could wear those on any day of the week. For pants, there were skorts (for girls), khaki shorts, blue jeans (which you could only wear with your spirit shirt on Mondays), and black jeans (which I absolutely despise, which you could only wear with the polo). For belts, they had to be either black or brown. You could only wear white socks, even though everybody at the school broke this rule, especially the girls. No open toed shoes, just tennis shoes, and they couldn't be any bright neon colors. For jackets, they could only be red, but they didn't have to have the school's logo on it. In addition to jackets, you couldn't wear the hood. No headgear of any kind. Girls could not wear makeup until the 7th grade, and girls also couldn't wear nail polish at all. Shirts had to be tucked in at all times. I'm not entirely sure about their jewelry policies. No Heelies, even if the plugs were in. Also, the red polos were all short sleeved, so they were at least generous enough to let people wear under shirts during the winter, I think.
Any violation of any of these rules would result in a detention.
The point is, these rules were so detailed that they were made by soulless bureaucrats, but I guess old Nuns are the same thing. Yes, I went to Catholic schools.
And let me guess….that strict Catholic education sucked right???? (Sarcasm) As with anything worthwhile there are rules attached. Without rules guess what we have………..a declining society. So you choose.
Uniforms at my school are like $300 in total. (Two polos with school logo, one pair of khakis, two pairs of skirts and one sweater) and that’s for the girls.

When I graduated high school I headed straight for the University (ASU) to be exact and it just seemed like the best thing to do and I wanted to stay in good graces with my elders. Upon graduating and hitting the work force 6 years later I was making 90k but I saw myself making 7 figures. I wasn't happy with my job and I was tired of doing the "right thing"
+Rilo Robinson In my experience, the "right thing" is usually only the "right thing" because it's the traditional thing. People are afraid to break tradition because, well, they'll fall out of grace with everyone else who thinks they know the "right thing" to do. It's good to know that you figured that out by going through it yourself!
CapOhTV It was soon when I branched out and essentially started flying solo I started to get more money that I had ever seen at one time and wisdom that was worth more than all of it. I found my own way and I payed off my school debt not long after that and looking back there was a lot of people who tried to put me in boxes and limit my potential

I don't understand why people hate on school uniform so much, I am from India. We had uniform shirt, skirt, shoes, socks and tie. It was a lifesaver for my parents since they could not afford to buy regular clothes and I was one of the richest in the class! The trick is to make clothes slightly bigger than you so that they last for 3 or more years. It makes it more comfortable to wear and lasts longer. Skip to college and ended up getting ridiculed for cheap and unfashionable clothes by privileged kids. In school we did not talk about clothes, make up or jewellery, we talked about fun stuff like movies, books, politics etc. Switch to college and girls could only talk about clothes and make up and nothing more interesting. In school my friends had tags, the studious, the singer, the painter etc. Switch to college it was the fashion icon, the great figure one etc. If you require only clothes and makeup to express your individuality, you don't have one to begin with.

First time you get it taken, a parent or guardian has to pick it up.
The second time you get it taken, you don't get it back in 30 days/2 weeks.
The third time you get it taken, you have to get it back at the last day of school!!

Two huge problems I have with my school uniforms were no hoodies and belts being required. I hate belts so much.
Bad because it's a waste of money and it's so boring to look at everyone wearing the same clothes. It feels like prison and you have your own clothes to wear.

ugh my school uniform has skirts (hate em) and they finally announced that they're allowing trousers and then i was so hype until i realised that they're allowing them when my class leaves. am i salty? yes.
Sometimes I get lost in the general assembly and wind up in another section's line, and the only way to recognize my classmates from a distance is a jacket that one of them wear...
Problems I HAVE with unifrom
1. Just before school start i have to WASTE my last hours of summer vacation at shops for shoping for stupid uniform

In my school they have unifrims and people still get dress coded for skirts
Good, but I think we should be able to express our selves with the uniforms (wearing it how you want, wearing jewellery, different shoes) because that way you don’t waste time in the morning picking an outfit out and you still get to express yourself. It also stops people from being jealous and it stops making less wealthy people being frustrated or sad.
At my school every gender is forced to wear trousers and a navy blue polo shirt because boys and teachers couldn’t stop looking. Girls in skirts were also deemed distracting, so we are in the wrong apparently. It shouldn’t be a problem that skirts are too high up because it isn’t a problem the problem is the people making a fuss over it in any way.

Also it’s easier to tell student apart I got attacked by year eight but since they all wear the same uniform I couldn’t tell them apart because they were Asian so I couldn’t tell the hair colour that’s why we can’t have School uniforms
At my school all we can wear is a white buttoned shirt with a certain colored tie, and some grey pants with black military style shoes. And socks that can only be black or white

I’m not really a fan of uniforms though my school uses them so yea don’t have a choice, well at least this year we don’t have to tuck our shirts in (which is how most people got dress code violations last year). Also the willpower thing, I find myself using my willpower to try and not snap on my classmates when they’re being unbearably loud and annoying (seriously it’s high school show some self control, I’d like to hear my own thoughts thank you very much) than when trying to pick out my clothes for the day (regular clothes not the uniforms)...then again my clothes are kinda simple so...

School uniforms suck because there uncomfortable, and they be talking about, "Skirts and dresses must be at your finger tips or lower."my daughter is in middle school and she's tall so the skirts are too small Just (1 inch too short) and her school called me everyday she wore a skirt and would sent her home for it. I was always pissed but she still wore skirts everyday.

School uniforms are good because then the teachers will know if a student is part of the school and then when *violent* people *roam* inside the school, they might arrest them or tell them to get out immediately.
If you don't understand some of these meanings, here they are.
1. Violent - Using or involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something
2. Roam - Move about or travel aimlessly or unsystematically over, through, or around a place.
nope, they are way to expensive and are no good they have no purpose other than to waste people's money and taking away some major skill growing up. Even if there was something like that there would be a sort of code or message in the school and they would know where to go.

I don't think we should have school uniforms. The school uniforms at our school are extremely uncomfortable yet still quite expensive
My school does have uniforms but a strict dress code. No overly violent shirts (like really gory death metal t shirts, sadly), can’t have shorts that go above your knees, and you can’t wear sleeveless shirts that *hide your shoulders.* They also sell expired food and white out the expiration date and put a new one on and don’t shut the school down when some kid puts a battery in the microwave, turns it on and explodes the entire microwave while causing everyone else to suffocate in battery acid. My school also spends to much on school activities other than our education so we literally have no money to buy new text books, ink, paper or to get new teachers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if my school shut down.

Arguments for uniforms debunked.
They make you look smarter- Which is more important: my clothes or my education?
They reduce bullying- No they don’t. If a kid is being bullied, it’s the schools responsibility to deal with it.
They create a sense of equality- Again no. If a kid comes in wearing a dirty, ripped, small uniform, do they look equal?
Kids don’t have to decide what to wear- What?! God forbid kids actually get to decide what they wear.
They prepare you for when you need to wear a uniform for a job- Wearing a suit is not a skill. It’s not hard.
They make it easier to identify intruders- What if an intruder comes in with a uniform?
Also for the job thing not all jobs require a uniform. Plus the "uniform" for a job is actually usually standardrized Personal protective equipment or to identify people who are some sort of emergency responder like nurses, fire fighters, construction workers. Desk jobs usually don't have mandatory uniforms. Even Walmart the only thing uniform is a cheap flimsy vest that wear over your clothes.
On behalf of all the poor students whom have to wear school uniform, I say that school uniforms are bad because don’t let kids express their personality and they don’t let kids be responsible!
My friend her school uniform is basically impossible to chose a outfit here is what I remember: no jeans or athletic wear, no writing or logos on shirt bigger than your fist.

they're uncomfortable, and it's almost as if everyone's body type fits the uniform. which it doesnt lmao. students should be able to dress their body type and sometimes the uniforms bring unwanted attention to girls who are especially skinny or curvy.

I feel as uniform is mainly bad but a formal dress conduct should still be in place, so the blazer i wear for school is £70 (its blue and everyone got it REALLY dirty) and we only wear it for two years then a jumper that is £30. but a normal blazer costs like £10-20, if school still had a formal dress code it would make it difficukt for anyone to make fun of your clothes but still giving you that f r e e d o m and would cost a lot less for parents. Although i get school prefers it that way as how can someone get it THAT wrong

My school didn't have uniforms, but every year, students seemed to be terrified that they implement them. Didn't happen, thankfully. Though, we still had the stupid rule that said no one was allowed to wear hats...
At my school, if you are not wearing a uniform you will be sent to Sac (all day) or call your parents to bring you a uniform from home.
EDIT: You can wear free dress but you have to pay when you are able to pay.....
EDIT 2 : During the free dress period we still have to follow dress code.
But the good thing is you don’t get bullied for wearing the same clothes every year 💕
Bad because what if your uniform is to small or something you’ll be yelled at plus schools with uniforms usually have really mean staff members
I wear a school uniforms and it’s strict lol like if you wear accessories they have to be in school colours and you can’t wear any type of earrings apart from studs

Plad skirt. We don't get one week off breaks like spring break or fall break we just get summer break and Christmas break and of course the weekends plus summer break is 11 weeks and winter break is 2 weeks so I wear more uniform in the year technically then regular days I go to a k-12 charter school in California I'm in 8th grade now been going there since kinder and I'm going there untill 12th grade im so nervous when I get to college cause I'm not gonna know how to dress cause on weekends I just wear balck leggings and an old shirt
Plus I only own 5 polo shirts ,2 kaki pants,2kaki shorts, 2 skirts on kaki one plad. and so I don't own alot of cloaths cause that's basically all I own ik I'm being very specific I'm just upset about it.

Don't forget that uniforms also have a dark history. During English colonial era, Christian missionaries started schools in Afria and implemented uniforms to kill African culture and religions. In the US, the first school (that was not for upper class) were boarding schools that native american are forced to go to the uniform was used as a tool yet again to erase native American culture. When Japan was a toltarina county and conquered Taiwan they used uniforms to assmiluate and erase Taiwan culture. Also toltarion countries love uniforms because it help erases personal identity. That why Japan until the 1980's made students wear uniforms outside of school grounds because it was bits of the previous toltrian thinking left over.
They can just have a policy of no inappropriate clothes
Hoodies with cool designs for me equals cool t-shirt so i wear that for the whole day for the whole year until next year
The only problem is that clothing is like status, and some people would get jealous and such.
My teachers hate what I wear, but I really don’t care. I have an Iron Maiden shirt, a Slayer shirt, an IT shirt, and a few more like that.
My school does this thing where they steal students clothes and resell them for the proce if brand new ones one time this thing happened where my shirt was gone I went to buy a new one and the new one I was about to buy had my name on it
Most people don’t point out that uniforms makes bullying worse. Instead of talking you your cloths aren’t good enough, they say YOU aren’t good enough. World you rather hear “Your shirt is ripped are you poor? XD” or “your so fat and ugly, your a failure”? Like really dose nobody realize this!?
Wrong, there’s uniforms at local stores but everyone shops at the same time so they’re always sold out
I have no idea where some of these people are buying these "expensive" uniforms. I went through both junior high and high with some pretty cheap wardrobes, you only needed to have the right color (a pair of dickies or what not) and button down shirt or cheap polo. Spent 1 year in an inner city school as my parents were moving around at the time and saw with my own eyes how there were little clicks of students scrutinizing others based on either their attire or some other foolish observation. Pretty sure it's not like that for everyone yet i made the closest friends while i was in a uniform mandated school. I came from a poor family as my father was only a laborer yet no one at school knew anyone else's background, unless you were close friends. The student in question actually came from a very comfortable household with their own business. We became very close, along with a slew of other students from various backgrounds. The uniform was actually unimportant as daily interactions allowed students to better gauge their peers. I don't know, maybe i'm not making any sense or come from a different time yet i enjoyed those years.

@@Mandylol90 Yeah, there's some shitty people out there, but some teachers or faculty being shit doesn't mean school is anywhere near a prison. I've seen prisons, I've read about them, and trust me, the similarities are in structure only. Yeah, stuff needs to be improved upon, but it's not so bad that it's actually like a prison.
My point was that just because there's a balcony doesn't prove anything. A balcony is just a decoration piece at the end of the day, not something big and sinister.
