The fact that most young people nowadays apparently base their knowledge mainly on internet memes illustrates beautifully how valid the message of this song still is today (over 50 years later). FYI, the song is a critique of the superficiality of modern-day life.
Just incredible voice! Goes from velvety baritone to tenor, from clear as sparkling water to grit ON A DIME and back! Unbelievable "timber" to his voice!
Amazing how David Draiman has brought together 3 generations of music lovers in 1 song ... heavy metal to rock ballard to early pop....awesome talent and voice
I am 68 years old and remember first hearing this song by Simon and Garfunkel in 1963. I have love it ever since and couldn't believe I would love it by a heavy metal band, but I do.
I am Russian. Not English native speaker, but even I know this is Simon and Garfunkel original. And Disturbed did the brilliant cover that was highly praised by Paul Simon (the author) himself.
Well most of you youngsters think this is new....but us old timers know it well from our youth when heavy metal had not been thought of yet. To hear a heavy metal group put out such a wonderful cover of a folk song is refreshing. David's voice is mesmerizing. He is extremely talented.
These kiddos are young. I was born in the late 80’s and I know Simon and Garfunkel very well. My musical mentors often used them as perfect examples of balanced and nuanced harmonies. It’s still cool to see people young and not as young being touched by this powerful performance. And maybe being introduced to the giants who paved the way!
I have never seen it as a meme, and its originally by Simon and Garfunkle. Disturbed brought the song to life for this generation and it is the best version of it yet.

People come across or are guided to new music all the time then learn of the history and background of the song! I've done it several times for example Tiffany- I think we're alone now was a cover of a 60's song; Whitney Houston mutilating Dolly Patrons Always love you - a lot of people think that WH version is the original when it's not!
@lbialk if you're doing a cover of a song, yes, totally agree with you, but, when you're just reacting to a song, it is not the same! When I came across this version, I had totally forgot about the original version and was actually reminded of it because of a reaction video! When written, the Viet Nam war was ongoing, there was segragation and civil unrest in the United States. It was commentary on the dark times as seen through the eyes of Simon & Garfunkle and reimagined by David Draimen
This is a classic by Paul Simon and Garfunkel, in the 1960s! He has done the best cover I have seen. He is capable of such richness and range of style and voice. Even his word intonation is meticulous. If you can, listen to the original from the 60s to get the full effect.
Simon & Garfunkel were the original singers of the song and Disturbed just redone it and I love what David Draiman has done with this song his voice is phenomenal and amazing. Disturbed is just awesome and shows that they can be heavy metal but they can also do other things his voice is just that versatile.
The Sound of Silence", originally "The Sounds of Silence", is a song by the American music duo Simon & Garfunkel. The song was written by Paul Simon over a period of several months in 1963 and 1964. ... The growing airplay led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. Released: September 12, 1965
"People listening without hearing" - sums up the people who think this is new and don't do some basic research. This is a powerful cover of Simon&Garfunkel's song from the 1960s.
@@carlotta4th yeah but I think technology is really abused. People sort if communicate through social networks, but they don't know their neighbors names like it used to be. No openness, no sincerity or understanding
a lot young people need to realize that there is some amazing music that existed before 1980, including Simon and Garfunkel, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary.
A lot of young people today just can’t appreciate the pure talent of the bands that started the metal movement. I’m not lumping you in with them. Without the technology to overproduce and cover up musical mistakes the 60’s and 70’s metal gods still made pure gold. Do an honest and pure musical talent reaction to War pigs by Black Sabbath then tell my if I’m wrong. Enjoyed your reaction here. Update: after watching your “down with a sickness “ reaction I want to suggest that you really concentrate on the guitar talent and don’t get too distracted by the lyrics or video. It is the biggest Anti-War song of all time but the guitar and construction of the song is simply unmatched. I look forward to watching you review it. Enjoy!
The song was written in the early 60s by Paul Simon and performed by Simon and Garfunkel. The song is about peoples failure to communicate with each other. It is said that the Simon and Garfunkel version is a warning about this lack of communication and the Disturbed version is an angry battle-cry that that warning was ignored. Paul Simon has said that the song really belongs to David Draiman and Disturbed now, he absolutely loves this version.
Simon wrote this song back in the late 60’s or early 70’s sung by Simon and Garfunkel. Basically a warning of things to come that we will become silent and get caught up in a world of electronics, cell phones, computers, internet watching music videos becoming silent and immersed in all this electronics and no personal shared feelings listening each other, going to listen to or play live music, concerts together. Listen to part of the lyrics people hearing with out listening, how many people do we see in this world walking on the side walks our faces buried in our cell phones on internet or texting hearing but not listening to people or things around us. People at parties visiting friends or relatives yet on their phones again hearing but not communicating or listening so this was a warning of this to come and Disturbed version saying in urgency and in very strong vocals it’s! happening now!. I love this version of the song, it gave me chills
The memes are from the original by Simon and Garfunkel, also an awesome yet different style. Disturbs version gives me chills with every listen, Simon and Garfunkel causes me to cry with it's simple harmonic beauty. Just an amazing song.
Always glad to see people listening to metal. I think that metal is the new version of classical music combined with poetry that conveys raw emotion on many levels but is commonly overlooked.
Simon and Garfunkel released this in 1964, I believe, and was a typical "folk" song written by Paul Simon. It has been covered many times but David Draiman used his classical training and combined it with his heavy metal voice to add a dimension never heard before with this song. David was classically trained as a cantor when he was growing up.
You should have watched the video that goes with it. Its about people not being able to communicate vocally or emotional anymore. When it was written in the 60s its was actually very prophetic about whats happening now, never mind back then, especially with thw technology we have now
Now this was a comment I saw quite a few times and it makes total sense the more I listen to both versions: S&G’s version was a warning of what’s happening to reality Disturbed’s version is basically the anger due to not heeding the warning beforehand; hence the growls at the near end. It makes so much sense but also hits deep, especially now in 2020... also small fun fact: David was actually sick when performing during the Conan show but still tried to perform as best as he could, boy oh boy did he do such
this for sure: check out the official vid, and stick on some headphones. the live version is good & proves Draimian's talent, but listening to the official vid with a good set of headphones will make you weep..
I was a teen when this was first released by Simon and Garfunkel. I always thought that it was about the neon god sitting in the corner of every household, stopping speech and listening to others whilst glued to the box. David Draeman cries out his frustration at the fact that 60 years on no one heeded their warning, as can be seen on a daily basis everywhere you go with people having ear pieces in . stops conversation, and eyes down looking at the new neon god, the phone
I just think this version shows the true meaning of this song and the urgency and warning of the song that we need to straighten our shit out before it’s too late.
Your expression is as funny as mine was when I saw Disturbed's heavy metal songs. I got so excited because I thought I'd get a collection of beautiful music sung by this gorgeous voice
The original is from Simon and Garfunkel written by Paul Simon in 1964 ! The fans of "Disturbed" were not happy, because this is not a rock song". But Paul Simon complimented David Draimen with this cover. Listen to the lyrics this represent the present day than 1964 !
I know many have said this already, but I will help affirm that this song was originally created by Simon and Garfunkel. Disturbed's version of this is awesome.
The original performed by Simon & Garfunkle in 1965 was a warning about surrendering to the "god of technology," and David Draiman's performance is castigating us for not paying attention. That is why Paul Simon has put a link to that performance on his own social media. And you don't have to feel bad about not recognizing the song as a cover, since I don't recognize covers of songs that were performed prior to WWII.
1964 - originated by Simon & Garfunkel....this version takes the song to a totally new level and dimension....I'm a believer in making change for the better without losing the meaning/message. :)

I'm 62 I know the Simon and Garfunkel Song but this is outstanding. Never heard of disturbed and bought a CD that day. I need to catch up with the times 420 everyone
Like the idea of reacting to metal, plenty of folks do, but a huge issue is that metal is a massively broad and flexible genre. "Metal" can range, as you've seen from a heavy/hard rock like Disturbed or newer Metallica, up to symphonic sounds like Epica and Nightwish, across to folk metal like Eluveitie, thrash such as Slayer and older Metallica, then Slipknot, Carcass, Wintersun, Jinjer, Meshuggah, Iron Maiden, Strapping Young Lad, Behemoth, Be'lakor, Amon Amrath and so many others all have a distinct sound. You take a Disturbed track, even at their heaviest and match it to a Cradle of Filth or Meshuggah song and you're not even in the same proverbial musical timezone. Nightwish, Epica, Arch Enemy and Jinjer all for example have female vocalists but the sounds the bands produce are vastly different (Epica and Nightwish being largely symphonic and Arch Enemy and Jinjer more classic death). Reacting to Metal is not a simple and singular thing. I love Be'lakor - Suns Delusion, Eluveitie - Tegernako, Gojira - Flying Whales and Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars but not sure how you or your sister(??) would cope with them, they are a whole gradient above what you're listening too.
what is the purpose of reacting if the lyrics are ignored. Yes the version is great, I love the passion in his voice, but the message in the song is so important especially day and age. Why didn't you discuss that?
Okay so this is one of the most amazing live performances I've seen. The others are from a band called Night wish. Start off with Ghost love score The Live version from Wacken 2013. Also from the same concert in Wacken, romanticide and the poet and the pendulum. Nightwish fans will flock to view them 😁
Great video guys...I just subbed and can't wait to see more videos you react to. Disturbed has alot of amazing songs I would suggest Down with the sickness he performed in Germany back in 2008 Rock N RING
First time viewer here. Don’t know if you already have but if you guys like heavy metal, you have GOT TO check out Jonathan Lee’s TH-cam channel. Guy is crazy talented, plays so many instruments, and does great heavy metal versions of Disney/cartoon songs. His two Prince of Egypt covers are iconic. This was originally done by Simon&Garfunkel. Another good version of this song came out recently as a cover done by an a capella group called Pentatonix. Should check out there version as well.
Yes Paul Simon actually wrote the song him & Garfunkel's sung it back in 67 beautiful song I Love It I hear this cover by Disturbed and it's so emotional the power of His Voice pulls you in and it makes you feel so much but what's really amazing about this song came out in 67 but think about what's going on the world right now we are now in the world of The Sound of Silence cuz people are not communicating just talkin or emotionally connected anymore everything is so messed up and it's so sad but on another note another song of theirs that's really good is down with the sickness again talking about people that are different and people you know thinking that somebody sick or they're always wrong you know the way some others treat their kids or my child is sick and they argue and fight with them to change them to the way they want them that's what that songs about and that's a great song too and I'm 60 and I love all kinds of music chaos everything I am extremely eclectic but hopefully if you listen to Down With The Sickness maybe you might like it it's just another different site it is not mellow like this it's harder
Simon and Garfunkel sang it in 1963. Paul Simon wrote it when he was 21. David's voice is more powerful and passionate than Paul Simons. Other bands have done it but this is by far the best one i have heard. I am 62. I love all kinds of music. Another one of there's is Down with the sickness.
If you haven't already, you should do a reaction video to "Jinjer - Pieces -Live Studio Session"! The singer and the band are all amazing! I think you'll like it. It'll take you for a rollercoaster ride and it may draw more of a visible reaction from both of you!!! Rock and Roll!! 🤘
I really enjoyed your reaction and analysis ... Excellent ........ David Draiman's voice is epic. Regarding the lyrics, Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning. The Disturbed version is furious because the warning was ignored.
It’s originally by Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960s, It’s been covered many times but this is the best version for me 👌
I haven’t heard many versions but I can’t see many topping this 😳
Even Paul Simon of S&G, who wrote the song back in the 60's emailed David Draiman that he loved Disturbed's version of S&G's classic.

Have a go at Down with the sickness or stupify.
We are disturbed.
what is the purpose of reacting if the lyrics are ignored.

It's amazing how many of these reaction videos the reviewers don't know it's by someone else originally let alone mention Simon and Garfunkel!
These two are priceless.
Simon and Garfunkel was the original artists to this song it was covered from Disturbed x
Great video guys...I just subbed and can't wait to see more videos you react to. Disturbed has alot of amazing songs I would suggest Down with the sickness he performed in Germany back in 2008 Rock N RING
Music Lovers: Simon and Garfunkels Sound of Silence could NEVER be redone.
Disturbed: Hold my beer.
Disturbed should release an album of covers. Nearly every time they cover a song, it's better than the original. My opinion.
Both Draiman and Simon (the songwriter) are Jews from NY.
You guys should definitely react to his videos.
Amazing how many people don't at least look up the originals of covers before these reviews, or even just listen to the originals
Its funny hearing people who have no idea who Simon and Garfunkel are. Lolol
This was originally done by Simon&Garfunkel. Another good version of this song came out recently as a cover done by an a capella group called Pentatonix. Should check out there version as well.
Egads! I’m so old I remember when the original came out many, many years ago. You guys were definitely not even a thought then. 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
This is an unbelievable cover of Simon and Garfunkel
Simon and Garfunkel sang it in 1963. Paul Simon wrote it when he was 21. David's voice is more powerful and passionate than Paul Simons. Other bands have done it but this is by far the best one i have heard. I am 62. I love all kinds of music. Another one of there's is Down with the sickness.
ROFL - The teens and 20 something’s trying to articulate the deep meaning of a song because of their deep knowledge based on memes and TH-cam???
Simon and Garfunkel...I hope people are hearing this song.
Omg
Omg it's Simon & Garfunkel, from the 1960's it's a classic lol how have you not heard that before.
