Scotty you should get ahold of a friends HALF YEAR 1999-2000 BMW 540i. Worst car I've ever had. Check the PCV valve, check the air filter, look for oil leaks, etc... My family has three Toyotas and the average age of the three is 18 or 19 years old, and they keep on running! I'm not planning on buying another car, either. Just take listen to Scotty and do your preventative maintenance.
“I pay cash for all my cars”, me too but I will spend more than 5k for one. Toyota is now my go to manufacture of cars. I find them usually just before they go off their warranty and they will run until you wreck them or drive them for 300,000 miles.
Hey Scotty just purchased my first scan tool today, on my way to auto independence ( I checked my battery and alternator for the first time woo-hoo, and no codes). I also got the goo be gone for the bird poo, thank-you so much for all your good advice.

If the financing arm of the automakers didn't write these risky notes, they'd have nothing to worry about. Of course, that would depress sales, because the cheap money in the form of risky loans helps inflate sales, drive up prices of vehicles. Endless cycle. It's best to live within one's means. That goes for the automakers, too.
Thanks to your good advice, these are the vehicles I own: 2007 Avalon, 200K Miles, 2009 Lexus RX350, 175,000 miles, 2010 FJ Cruiser, 91,000 miles, 2010 Camry SE, 127,000... all are in perfect mechanical condition, and I have small loans on the FJ and the Lexus... my rides will probably outlast me!! LOL!!!
I just got an 05 scion xB the other week, for 2 grand CASH out the door. Small car lot. Looks and drives like it has 10k miles on it 😁 extremely greatful
They should just lower the interest rate to 1% for every customer. Their greed is destroying them as planned. It’s gone get really bad if they don’t do something fast!
Well people also are buying brand new, really expensive cars that they really can't afford if it wasn't for the really long loan period (72 or 84 months). I buy used, paid cash. A good car can last 20 years if you take good care of it. 5 grand will usually get you a nice car. The industry is in a ton a trouble.
These dealers and car companies are shooting themselves in the foot. These cars are just sitting there rotting when they can deal them out better. An interest rate should be fixed instead of trying to lure you in with a zero down for 12 months. Your 20k car will be 30 plus with that future interest. I was laughed at in a dealer when I offered 18 for a 24k car. Just goes to show these dealers don’t want to play ball. Well now with the crisis these guys are lucky to sell anything. They’re better off selling burgers and tacos lol 😂

I've always paid cash for used cars. A 1970 3/4 ton 4×4 pickup I paid $2000 for lasted 22 years. It hauled so much for me that when I retired it I kept it in the yard as a monument to saved money. Years later a guy offered me $500 for it so I let it go.
I used to believe that, then I struggled through the housing bubble to pay my debt, while others stopped paying. many I know lived in a house not making mortgage payments for 2 years and the bank still worked with them, kept the house, negotiated lower price and better rates. That piper forgot about them.
grumpybill Not when it comes to cars. They will wait right up until the statute of limitations is about to run out and then decide to sue you for the balance.
Xennial Millionaire If you do get sued for an old debt then answer the summons and defend yourself in court. Debt collectors (scum of the earth) operate a volume business, and they count on most of their victims ignoring the summons so they win a default judgement automatically. 9 times out of 10 they don’t have anything aside from a spreadsheet with the basic account information. In other words, they’ve got nothing and when people actually answer the summons and defend themselves, they have no choice but to drop the lawsuit (usually they’ll just ignore requests for discovery until it expires). Even if they do have evidence the debt is valid, they’ll often drop it because they don’t want to risk the expense of pursuing a lawsuit with a dubious prospect of recovering anything (defaulted debtors, for obvious reasons, are usually broke). I got sued by several credit card issuers after being unemployed for 8 months during the 2008/2009 collapse. I answered all the summons and after filing requests for discovery, the plaintiffs in every case simply ignored the lawsuits until they expired. But you have to answer the summons!
Scotty, you repeatedly mention that dealers charge too much for used cars, yet you never suggest an alternative. What avenue do you suggest for shopping a private owner? But buying from a private owner isnt always a good choice as these people use kbb, Edmunds..etc to establish a selling price. Again, these are sites that you speak negatively about. Please advise
OK just don't pay. They will come get the car, sell it fast and get little for it, and come after you for the remainder of the loan. if you go into debt with a lender on a car, you are always better off selling the car yourself to get the highest you can. remember, you will still have to pay off the remainder of the loan. The loan is not forgiven. If the lender gets more money then you owed, you have a right to the balance, but if they get less, they will still go after you for the remainder
I have seen K&N filters ruin MAF, MAS sensors. The oil goes into the intake and collects on the sensors and "bakes" on the heated part of the sensor. I fully agree with Scotty on the "better MPG" claim, that if it were that easy to increase it, the OEM's would already be doing it, especially for the price.
I bought a 93 Thunderbird four years ago and all I've done is change the oil yearly. It runs great and doesn't use any oil. Best 500 dollars I've ever spent and yes a little old lady had it. Had 57 thousand miles and now it's got almost 70 thousand.
My wife and I used to have a car financed through Ally. They are the biggest joke of a bank. Never ever again will I finance with them again. Tons of negative reviews online as well. The car ended up getting totaled by a texting driver. Loved the car but at least we got away from that bank.
Jason S just traded in my 18’ Infiniti Q50 I financed through ally 2 mo ago for a 20’ mustang gt, can’t say anything bad about ally but all I did was setup autopay and leave it for a couple of years, site wasn’t the easiest to use, but I used it once. But I heard Scotty brought it up so I’m glad I switched lol
Reminds me of my experience with Ally Bank in 2011. I had purchased a used GMC 07 Sierra in Oct 2010. The stealership got me a loan through Ally. I received an inheritance from my grandma passing away in Apr 2011. I wanted to pay my loan off in full online. The website wouldn't let me. I called support and told them I'd like to pay my loan off. First question support asked me,"Did you win the lotto?". No, I received an inheritance and like to pay my debt off. Then they let me pay it off. I still for better or worse own and drive that 07 Sierra that definitely became a money pit. I have yet to decide what to replace it with. But I'll never finance through Ally again whenever I need another car loan.
We have a lot of gravel roads here in North Dakota. We kind of depend on the gas caps to keep the dirt out of the gas tanks. The cap-less systems need to be cleaned when ever you want to fill up. They only build cars for California.
I'm so glad tht I own my car, & my Truck!!!! I never got a car loan, I save my money 2 get wht I want, When I got my 2011 Truck, the guy stated @ me!!!! I told him I have all the money, I dnt do Auto Loans!!!!!!
You will 99% of the time get a better deal if you dont tell them you are a cash buyer. You probably paid the dealer the extra they would have made on the loan in cash because you negotiated poorly.
He didn't state at what point he revealed he was paying cash. I do all the haggling on price first. (And never trade my old car in. I sell it privately), then, after a price is agreed on, I'll state I'm paying cash. TBH, I've actually gotten a discount for buying cash before. I guess, it just depends on the type car, and the particular salesman you get.
I bought my Truck from a small car lot, Trust me I had my mechanic with me, He did all the negation & He was throwing all kinds of numbers out, we went back 3 weeks later cause he sold the lot, My mechanic got my truck 4 a good deal.......I had my truck 3 yrs now, It's rides so good....
Back in the good old days, all air cleaners were oil bath. Had one in my '65 Econoline van. Was not a problem to clean it out with solvent, reoil it, and replace. They say those old oil bath air filters worked better than the paper kind.
Thanks for putting out the truth Scotty. You are the man. I know these companies are greedy but even during a time like this, that they can even be still greedy, man it disgusting. But thanks for doing what you do Scotty. It's good people like you that makes the world better.

I had a 1972 Oldsmobile Delta 88, my first car and I only paid $25 fr for it in 1984/85. I let my sister drive it ONCE and backing out of our driveway without letting it warm up it stalled out(so she says). No engine ,no brakes. The driveway was a decent downhill slope. So what happened? She took out our neighbors white picket fence and half their brick stairs.. Weirdest thing was there was only a small half inch scratch on my back bumper. Thing was a tank...
If you like allowing dirt into your engine a K&N filter is the way to go. The standard paper filter does a superior job of keeping dirt out of the engine.
Fun fact about K&N filters. Yes they flow a lil better when brand new but once you clean them, a new paper filter flows more. K&N cost so much more & really you can only use them once if you have a performance car. I don't use them.
If you plan not to at least everyone should do it at once. Then they wouldn't know what to do. It's a giant scam that takes advantage of the poor and stupid anyway. I'm like Scotty always paid cash for my cars and the most expensive is the one I currently drive for €7000 that I bought 11 years ago when it was 8 years old and had only done 65000km (about 40000 miles) with a complete service history.
If you live on a dirt road, get a K&N filter ! Two if you can afford it, then you have no downtime. Just alternate and clean the dirty one at leisure. Always keep a New paper filter if possible and replace the cabin filters at the same intervals.
Bought a K & N air filter for my 1997 sunfire convertible 2.4 L when it had 189000 kms on it . Today I still have that same filter and my car has 456000 kms on it. Well worth the $ never have to buy another filter again.
I bought a starship in the 60s And the reactor is still going strong.. I can still reach Warp factor 10 with no problem..I guess I will just keep my starship until it leaves me stranded in a galaxy somewhere far far away.. Beam me up Scotty!!!!
The dilithium crystals will start going bad after 100 million light years. Be sure replace with new ones, the rebuilt ones only last a fraction of the time. 🌃
I have my loan through credit acceptance. I have gotten emails saying if i can't pay my bill to contact them. Im not poor and can pay my bill so its not a big deal.
I purchased a ford explorer two years ago. About fourteen months in to my finance company went out of business, and turned my account over to a collection agency. I never made a late payment, but my credit is screwed. I stopped paying after a few months. Let them repo it. Preditory lenders!
Yep, dealers offering longer payment time period but very little in they way discounts. After seeing multiple YT channels saying "What a great time to buy" the comments from people across the country say otherwise. Local dealers refused any discount on a vehicle I inquired about.
That’s why you should keep your car, maintain it and stop trading cars every 3 years. Now that’s an endless money pit system. I don’t understand why people do that. Always having a car payment. Times are changing, people need to learn how to be conservative with $$.
@Sound Waves The need to feel superior to others is the same reason we see advancement in medicine, vehicles, pretty much everything in day to day life. The day humans are no longer competitive is the day our future dies.

In this economy, it's probably an $8-9k car in V6 or four-cylinder form (my bad on the initial estimate on the 4-cyl) with an automatic. If it's the V6, make sure the owner presents proof that the timing belt and water pump was replaced; that's an ~$800 or so job that you need to do to prevent the engine from being fried by a broken timing belt. The inline-fours have a chain -- way better.
@@EMichaelBall it's an l4, still haven't signed paperwork, it's my first car purchase and being 18, after having my mechanic look at it I still gotta have my pops look at it before he helps me out, cant exactly buy a 9k car with 5k now can I. It is a dealership but I've taken a pretty good look at it and so far it looks really nice, just a few dings , nothing to worry about but my pops knows more, he mentioned a bunch of stuff I didnt check so we are going to check it out

Those lenders are getting just what they deserve. They ripped off a lot of people over the years and I'm one of them. The greed comes to no end with these bastards.
We have a car, truck, and SUV in the garage and no debt. Payments suck, save up and pay cash or knock out the loan really fast. Living debt free is a lot less stress that being in servitude to the lender.
Wells Fargo auto loan told me that they could stop my payment for a few months BUT they were still going to charge me the interest of those months I’ve stop making payments on and then when I start making payments, my first payment it’s going to be the interest of the months I didn’t pay. HOWS THAT FOR FLEXIBLE HUH? While ford completely froze payments and interest on my aunts vehicle. Shame on wellsfargo
My dad had a 2003 Dodge Ram but it was not the garbage they are making today. His only cars were Mopars and it would have broken his heart to see what they have become. It really is horrible!
HIS WIFE DECLUTTERED THOSE SHELVES ! SCOTTY HAS A HARD ENOUGH TIME KEEPING HIS MIND DECLUTTERED !!! BUT THEN MOST OF US MEN DO!! THANK GOD FOR OUR WIVES!!
Also mention that K&N filter oil gets on the oxygen sensors and they stop working and throwing codes, then ya have to clean them only to get the codes again shortly after. Stay away from oil coated filters, period.
That's not really fair to Dodge though. True car people know that Dodge's are built like a rock. . . . They sit there after the transmission inventively breaks at 10k miles. You look under the roast, to only find more roast.
I had a lot of bad luck with used cars, and just got fed up with breakdowns and trying to find ride's while my vehicle was in the shop - so I started buying new cars and almost always had a warranty which gave me peace of mind. But now I'm back to used vehicles now that I'm retired and don't drive much.
Finally Scotty making cents. Dont buy a car on credit. There are really good cheap cars. I saw 1991 Pontiac Bonneville, with 3.8 sell for $165. It had low mileage, looked nice, and almost 30 years old. Who cares. Its paid for!
I had a car that would get too heat soaked before the coolant sensor tripped, starter didn't even want to crank unless it sat. I wired a dryer high limit switch in parallel, they run 140-150 degrees. If it's normally closed you have to get the 4 or 5 wire type and use the connector that operates the timer advance.
I'll never buy a vehicle new or used on payments again...hey I'm 67 took me a long time to learn but I eventually learned! I'm keeping my 2004 jeep grand Cherokee ...it's had all kinds of problems, electrical/ power Windows/ locks full of oil leaks...runs good, transmission probs etc, etc!
I drive by a used car lot that says "No Credit? No problem" and all sorts of things, like nobody gets refused, so I'm thinking you just pay too much and when you get tired of making the payments you just return the car or something and buy the same sort of thing back at a higher price at some other similar lot or something.
Bought a 2003 (17 year old) toyota sequoia v8 4wd last year with 203k miles for $5k cash... they are tracking to 300k or even 400k miles or more.. I expect it to last another 15 + years easy.. no payments, cheap insurance, gets me everywhere I need to go. All year long.
Capless systems are mostly to discourage people putting additives and whatnot in gas tank. Still possible, but have to use special funnel. As long as you dont "top up" gas after pump stops, theres never a problem.

@Jeffrey Johnson they will by stealing through inflation from proper middle class earners. The rich and poor hate you.

Very nasty.😬
I've always paid cash for used cars. A 1970 3/4 ton 4×4 pickup I paid $2000 for lasted 22 years. It hauled so much for me that when I retired it I kept it in the yard as a monument to saved money. Years later a guy offered me $500 for it so I let it go.
You may be able to get away with not paying now but sooner or later once this has past the piper will come calling.
It’s all about how much you care about your credit score, ill keep paying

I would really like your questioned answered , because im considering buying a Toyota SUV in about 3 years
Just dont pay , theyll come get it.
@Mai Mariarti We'll pick them up at auctions for cheap. Try me .
