Hi Scotty, my chevy truck is having problems with the service engine soon light that comes on about every other week, had spark plugs and wires replaced, plugs were worn and needed replacing, code kept coming up that there's a misfire ,mechanic tells me that cam bearings are wearing out which is causing the misfire all over the place, engine runs fine at speed, but idle is when the problem happens, it has almost 206,000 miles, I forgot to mention that engine has a partially collapsed hydraulic lifter, but mechanic says engine rebuild is on the horizon, any thoughts, thanks 😊

There’s no one better than Scotty!! Honest man who just wants to help his fellow Americans. I’ve learned so much from Scotty and saved a ton of money on the maintenance of my truck from his knowledge and wisdom. Thank you 🙏🏽 Scotty!!!
I agree. Mechanics are so corrupt, they will over charge and probably not do anything major to your car. I have saved thousands by watching channels like this. You are honest and thorough.
I had a Made in Japan 1990 Honda Accord Ex that lasted 19 yrs and 875000 km. It even made it through 19 Canadian winters with very little rust. Secret? Change your oil max every 5000km, change your battery every 5 yrs and take it through the car wash as often as you can. Never a single problem.
@the1spyderryder batterys here come with a 5 yr warranty. But no they're usually down to 10 volts by then. Just change it as a rule to save your alternator. Even if the car starts.
@@the1spyderryder I bought a Tacoma new in 2016 , I got 7 years from the factory battery, was still working but it started to swell, winter was a month away so I bought a new one from the dealer, service manager said the new one was only good for 5 years, talked to a lady who got 12 years out of her original battery from her Camry, she kept her car in her garage, I don’t have a garage, mine stays outside. She and I live in the north east.
Aah Scotty !!...He's come full circle and is talking about the basics again which is fine with me because I 'we' tend to forget things and need a refresher course.
The very 1st thing i did when i bought my mini was got rid of the run flats. It was like i bought an entirely different car. It drives, handles, corners so much better. Each tire/wheel combo is 14lbs lighter than the factory wheel/tire. I also went from 29.6mpg to 35.5 mpg driving the same route, not changing any other thing
We had tire and driving issues with the wife’s 2019 4runner. Floated all over the road. Toyota was worthless for help. So I started asking around with others who had same vehicle or tacomas. Finally zeroed in on a tire. Now it runs great. All in the tire.
Scotty. On the brake light and low brake fluid. Your explanation was correct up to the point , adding brake fluid, YOU ARE WRONG..😮 With new brake pads and the master cylinder fluid level is at the full mark, as you stated, as the brake pads wear, the fluid level will drop. When the fluid drops to a point where the brake fluid on, that light says, it is time for a brake job. If there is no leak, No fluid SHOULD BE ADDED. If fluid is added, the brake pads will Be worn down to metal. That's all folks 😅
Fix little problems before they become bigger problems. Keep up with oil and transmission fluid changes. I daily drive a 2003 Honda Accord with over a million miles. Currently 1,053,000
Awesome Lesson!!I definitely have had some of all these problems. Now I know exactly how to handle those issues. Thanks to Scotty, gosh, you are the best!! Wish you were in NC😊
Scotty, the diodes need vhecking but the voltage regulator needs checking. The Important thing is if theres more than 0.5 v ripple the the alternator needs checking. The way to check the diodes is to set your volt meter to the AC setting snd you can check how much ripple or AC is comming from your alternator. The alternator is actually a three phase AC generator, the diodes makes it DC and the regulator sets the DC output voltage to the battery.
By using a slightly larger battery than my car was designed for I was able to extend its usable lifespan to 6 years instead of 3 years with the recommended sized one. I modified the battery tray on one side to allow a longer battery which worked because the side of the battery tray that was cut allowed the bigger battery to press right up against the front core support while still being able to use the stock battery mounting bracket. If you can get away with a larger battery, DO IT!
I do the same but unfortunately battery manufacturers void the warranty if you put the wrong battery in your car. But i have never had to rely on the warranty using an oversized battery
When we leave for 6 months in the winter to stay in Florida, we just hook the battery to a regular battery charger, set at the 2amp max setting plugged into a 24-hour timer, and set the timer to run for 1/2 hr per day. Works great....even with my decades old charger.
I'm still in Texas. Texas changed by having 3 crazy governors in a row inviting crazy people to move here. Anyone who wants to blame "The Feds!" or "Deep State!" are welcome. $3 Trillion in the past 35 years of federal taxpayers' money going to border security spending, and somehow voters too dumb to notice all a Texas governor has to do is say that government over there did it. Wheelie Boy stole women's civil rights, while my TV is selling dudes blue pills around the clock. Most folks in Texas don't care for the evangelical mass shooter burble from Church of England folks who forgot our founding fathers fought Our Revolution to get that nonsense out of schools and government. They had kids too early, before they were adults themselves. So they make a lot of noise and meddle with the peace to the point they seem like 'a majority'. But they are not. Most Americans are decent and fair people with critical thinking skills. I have yet to meet any Texan who is a fan of Abbott, Cruz or any of their boyfriends.
Got a made in Japan 2004 Lexus RX 330 with a 3.3 V6 with only 180,000 miles…. The car drives like it’s brand new. No problem, These engines are bulletproof
It's a great engine. Note: Hydraulic lifters for the intake and exhaust valves are not provided. Valve clearance needs checking and adjustment every 60-80k miles.
Had my '14 Grand Cherokee in for a oil change the other day. He comes out saying my power steering pump is leaking and that to pass inspection Id need to have a 9hr $2500 job. I said there is still fluid in there though right? Yes he said then changed "leak" to "weep" and I asked about stop leak and he had a story about yea it works but also can blow lines lol...Makes me wonder how they noticed that it hasnt lost fluid since I put stop leak in almost 2 yrs ago. Ill go to my other guy for the computer inspection again
I was in my 2020 Sequoia driving down I-95 to Florida when the maintenance light came on. I just bypassed the warning and kept driving. A half hour later, the Toyota dealer in VA calls me in the car and says "We noticed that your light came on, would you like to schedule an appointment?" It look them less than 30 mins to try to get their hands on my car.
For all you know, with newer vehicles, they might remotely cause a sensor issue or can activate a kill switch on it, just to get you into the dealership to spend money. With all the push for 15 minute Smart cities, they might just track you for going on a long road trip.
I have a 2016 Honda Fit and the stock battery is a 151R. Since it's the same size except it's a few inches longer I put in a 51R. 51R has more cold cranking amps than the 151R. Didn't even need to modify the battery tray.
I did the same here in the UK. Fits the tray perfectly. Same dimensions but more CCA. The stock batteries are only 226 CCA off memory. One I replaced with 320 CCA
The easiest way of cleaning oxidation/corrosion from your battery terminals is a can of hot water!!! If you leave the battery for 10 minutes and then pour another can of hot waters over the thermals then dry them off and apply the terminal protection spray and you are done!!! Just remember to tighten them up properly!!!
Cars have something called "parasitic drain"--the electronics in the car draw small amounts of energy when the car's off. This isn't a problem for normal use, but if you have a car you don't drive in the winter, or one you rarely drive at all, at least disconnect the positive battery terminal. This way the battery isn't being drained. A trickle charger is also a good alternative if where you keep the car has reliable power.
I go to Walmart and buy boat batteries for $95.00. I've put boat batteries in my cars for years and haven't had any problems.Just make sure that it's the right size and measure the diameter of your battery.
Scotty are you sure you picked the right job ?? 😂 You should have become a comedian , I'm always laughing at the way you explain stuff about cars !!!! 😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😊 Love your videos !!! I'm a woman who knows a lot about cars from being married to a mechanic , and also having a boyfriend for 10 years who use to build drag trucks/bikes ....etc... I've got a lot of great tips from you !!!!!
It's like going to the doctor for a headache from not sleeping and eating right. That doctor needs to run some tests to make money. If you want a doctor to find something wrong, you bet they can. And you'll never get well. They can find something wrong with anyone. Same thing with a car shop. Within reason. Learn to maintain cars worth maintaining. Affordably.
Scotty, I’ve got a newer, digital, tire pressure gauge and 4 stick-types I keep in my cars. Recently decided to double check digital with stick-types and found 2 of the stick types measured 4-6 psi lower than the digital and the other 2 matched! Maybe something to check.
Was having trouble with my car battery draining. Took a few days to realize I wasn't getting the rear hatch on my Escape closed completely due to the cargo mat slipping into the closing latch. It was maddening those few days until it was figured out.
People need to lift the hood and check all fluids once in a while instead of just driving until they hear an expensive noise, change oil and filter every 3 to 4 thousand miles, change or clean air filter, by maintaining my 4.3 chevy engine it went, 544,867 thousand miles before i over reved it and blew it up. Anger issue, dang ! But it was getting real noisey anyway, my witnesses called it my miracle motor, lol.
Hey Scotty I just bought a 2014 Navigator oh my gosh not a squeak or rattle .It runs so smooth It has the 5.4 V/8 the odometer is at137,000 I really hope I get another 60,000 more out of it The interior looks like new I’m not kidding . So any advice on more longevity It’s my pride and joy My wife has a 2021 Nautilus it’s very nice 10 k miles I love your show Your-all by yourself nobody like you out there keep going my friend
I have lived in cities and towns where there is an ethical oil change place that will double check estimates from local mechanics and dealerships, tell ya what's leaking (and isn't) check all the filters, look at the brake pads (but don't do brakes) and exhaust (don't do mufflers)
Mechanics should normalize taking a pic and showing the customer exactly where the issue is, regardless of the customer can understand, there needs to be some visual/xray … they tried to charge me $700 to change spark plugs…just changed them myself …
Thanks for the good advice. Why are mechanics allowed to steal from customers? Isn’t it illegal? Maybe if a few were seen in cuffs going to jail they’d stop!! My father went to school to learn to monkey around with friends on weekends. He came back home fuming because they actually had a class to teach them how to rob and even break things to get return business!!! The car service industry is all about how much you can steal from people. Hardly any car repair. Even dealers and managers do it. I know mechanics that quit because managers sold not necessary repairs that they hadn’t found or suggested. They’re ordered to do things that were not needed but managers sold to poor customers!!!! Shameful and rampant
Scotty if I see engine idle check battery voltage charge of 13.2V should I suspect a weak alternator if battery is less than year old. Thanks for your info on videos.
Battery scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed an additive to lithium ion battery electrolyte that allows the BEV to recharge to 80% in 10 minutes and is good for many recharge cycles. This may be a game changer for BEVs.
Scotty, I enjoy your videos. Thank you. Question: What kind of OBD scanner do you use? I want something that will do the maximum number of diagnostics.
@@andyblank4157 LOL tongue in cheek, I'm sure. I think that often used Toyotas are the WORST cars to buy used. Because people think "reliable car" means "I don't have to do any maintenance on it." There's plenty of used Toyotas with 100,000 miles on them and you're lucky if the owner changed the oil a few times, and nothing more.
Depends how they were maintained . I have a 2010 Kia Rio LX , 2.1 with a 5 speed manual . As Scotty would say , starts right up , runs like a clock . 205,000 miles - only thing I ever done do it besides regular maintenance was the front wheel bearings . First non American vehicle I’ve ever owned in damn near 50 yrs of driving . I’ve heard all the rumbles about Kia -- I can’t complain . Pretty zippy too . If I had a complaint it would be to make the damn thing easier to get in & out of it ! Lol !
The brake fluid is low because the damn brake pads and rotors need changing.. not because of "wear and tear" if your fluid level is low it's because you have a leak or you need pads and rotors.. plain and simple.
I had a Valve adjustment done on my car and at check out the mechanic recommended that I needed to replace my transmission fluid. I asked the lady WHY I would need to do that since I DID THAT MYSELF LAST MONTH. Then she asked how many miles I drive in a month, 600 at most. I just shook my head at her and asked if you have any more stupid questions for me, then she got mad at ME!!!
If you dodnt know that was his old house in the esrly part of the video where he is talking about batteries you know once he says the average battery is $140!! Sure there cheaper at Walmart wjere smart people get their batteries but if you go to the auto parts store that average price is probably closer to $200😮
Technicians at the dealerships are paid by how much they can sell so it stands to reason they'd try to sell you what you don't need. I worked for dealer service departments for over 20 years so I know all the tricks. I do most of my maintenance myself. If a repair sounds outrageously expense it usually is. I replaced my rear shocks and brake pads on my BMW for $350 with help from my husband and the dealer wanted $2000.
As to tire pressure measuring, I have at least 3 different gauges, each reads different than the other two. I also have a couple of inflators, a bigger one for large tires and a smaller one for the Honda Fit. You guessed it, the pressure gauge on each of these reads differently too, AND differently from the measuring gauges. One of the inflators has its gauge mounted to it's frame, the other one's part of the hose. When you hook the one with the hose gauge to the one with the frame gauge, again you get two different readings. WTF is a guy to do? So, I use an 'average of those gauges that fit the closest pattern i.e. if one shows 38psi, the next one 43psi and the third one 36psi, I use the middle one always and match manufacturers recommendation, also check tire wear once in a while.

Aah Scotty !!...He's come full circle and is talking about the basics again which is fine with me because I 'we' tend to forget things and need a refresher course.
Scotty - you are the gift that keeps on giving!
And sometimes regifting
He's the gift that keeps on talking. lol
@youdontknowme2915 I didn't what? Every statement was 100% factual
1 Toyota badge
2 frequent oil changes and service
3 oem parts
Thank you!
We had tire and driving issues with the wife’s 2019 4runner. Floated all over the road. Toyota was worthless for help. So I started asking around with others who had same vehicle or tacomas. Finally zeroed in on a tire. Now it runs great. All in the tire.
It’s the little things we can do ourselves that make a huge difference!👍😄
Scotty.
On the brake light and low brake fluid. Your explanation was correct up to the point , adding brake fluid, YOU ARE WRONG..😮
With new brake pads and the master cylinder fluid level is at the full mark, as you stated, as the brake pads wear, the fluid level will drop.
When the fluid drops to a point where the brake fluid on, that light says, it is time for a brake job.
If there is no leak,
No fluid SHOULD BE ADDED.
If fluid is added, the brake pads will Be worn down to metal.
That's all folks 😅
good point
Fix little problems before they become bigger problems. Keep up with oil and transmission fluid changes.
I daily drive a 2003 Honda Accord with over a million miles. Currently 1,053,000
😱😮 amazing
Awesome Lesson!!I definitely have had some of all these problems. Now I know exactly how to handle those issues. Thanks to Scotty, gosh, you are the best!! Wish you were in NC😊
Aww the little silver celica liftback; I miss my little car! It was great! Someone rear-ended me and it was totaled 😢
boy oh boy did I get took, and by a place I had gone to for years, and it got worse after that, but never again.
We need more Scottys!
Scotty’s back in Clarksville Tennessee and he is mad as hell and not going to take it anymore !!!
Taking my battery out on a 15 Silverado is a job in itself, I got a yellow top gel battery in there it must weigh about 90 lbs.
When we leave for 6 months in the winter to stay in Florida, we just hook the battery to a regular battery charger, set at the 2amp max setting plugged into a 24-hour timer, and set the timer to run for 1/2 hr per day. Works great....even with my decades old charger.
Nice video Scotty. Old school vibes.
Priceless information Scotty. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Non-stop Scotty!
Always great advice from Scotty even though it's from when he lived in Texas. Hope you're doing well Scotty! ❤
Thanks didn't know that about recalls.
Scotty is so knowledgeable
Thank you Scotty! 🇺🇲
Very informative. Well done. Thanks
That's why I enjoy my old jeep. I don't need my car talking to the salesman
For all you know, with newer vehicles, they might remotely cause a sensor issue or can activate a kill switch on it, just to get you into the dealership to spend money. With all the push for 15 minute Smart cities, they might just track you for going on a long road trip.
@@clampmotosua1789 Jeeps rule....especially in the Rockies
Thank you, Scotty, I've never even heard of Brake Fluid
I have a 2016 Honda Fit and the stock battery is a 151R. Since it's the same size except it's a few inches longer I put in a 51R. 51R has more cold cranking amps than the 151R. Didn't even need to modify the battery tray.
I did the same here in the UK. Fits the tray perfectly. Same dimensions but more CCA. The stock batteries are only 226 CCA off memory. One I replaced with 320 CCA
Scotty would be a great conductor in an orchestra! Keep it up Scotty!
You are amazing, thank you for all your enlightening info!
A trickle charger is also a good alternative if where you keep the car has reliable power.
use a solar panel trickle charger....does wonders.
Classic Scotty from Houston
This is one of your best videos. Simple easy info for everyone
WOW - A first. An honest car mechanic.
Thanks Scotty!
Thank you so much
I go to Walmart and buy boat batteries for $95.00. I've put boat batteries in my cars for years and haven't had any problems.Just make sure that it's the right size and measure the diameter of your battery.
That’s a fascinating concept! How did you know to do this? Do you own a boat & recognize the similarities or was it a hot tip from a friend?
Do you live in a colder climate?
I'm wondering about "Cold Cranking Amps" during our cold Michigan winters?
Scotty are you sure you picked the right job ?? 😂 You should have become a comedian , I'm always laughing at the way you explain stuff about cars !!!! 😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😊 Love your videos !!! I'm a woman who knows a lot about cars from being married to a mechanic , and also having a boyfriend for 10 years who use to build drag trucks/bikes ....etc... I've got a lot of great tips from you !!!!!
Great video!
Great info again!
Scotty, what is in the 5 black 5 gallon cans in the background?
It's like going to the doctor for a headache from not sleeping and eating right.
That doctor needs to run some tests to make money.
If you want a doctor to find something wrong, you bet they can.
And you'll never get well. They can find something wrong with anyone.
Same thing with a car shop.
Within reason.
Learn to maintain cars worth maintaining. Affordably.
Thank God for Scotty 😊
Scotty, I’ve got a newer, digital, tire pressure gauge and 4 stick-types I keep in my cars. Recently decided to double check digital with stick-types and found 2 of the stick types measured 4-6 psi lower than the digital and the other 2 matched! Maybe something to check.
Every car should last 400,000 miles
(with proper maintenance) Amen !!
Exactly my thoughts
Especially for these prices
Manufacturers don't want this to happen.
They want you to junk it and get another one.
Man I wish. Sadly they aren't made to last that long. Seems your lucky if your car makes it to 100k or 200k
I use brake fluid level to know when the brake pads are getting thin.
Qatwr and Baking or soda pop to clean battery terminals.
Why are there almost quotable comments and the same profile pics for multiple users what’s going on here!!!?????
Huh, I didn't know that about recalls....Thanks for the info Scotty! 👍
TY for Sharing
My 2004 Honda Pilot has over 378,000 miles. Running great
My 2004 Honda S2000 has 300,500+ miles
Thank You Mr Kilmer 🙏👍 Best Channel on Utube!!
Wow! A video about cars instead of politics! Great job Scotty!
😂
These days politics is even in our breakfast cereals. Damn near unable to escape it.
I have lived in cities and towns where there is an ethical oil change place that will double check estimates from local mechanics and dealerships, tell ya what's leaking (and isn't) check all the filters, look at the brake pads (but don't do brakes) and exhaust (don't do mufflers)
Or just park forward in any driveway since they are all slanted to the street for water drainage and never check oil in one for this reason.
Thank you
Learned Something New today from you Scotty, re the Spark with connecting battery Cables 👍
Scotty for the person of the year!
2 batteries in my 17 year old Toyota Hiace .both original and working well .
I concur with everything, Scotty said here.....
Mechanics should normalize taking a pic and showing the customer exactly where the issue is, regardless of the customer can understand, there needs to be some visual/xray … they tried to charge me $700 to change spark plugs…just changed them myself …
From my opinion, the main important thing for your car engine is the oil and coolant , use good quality your engine will last for ever 👌🏻
Thanks for posting videos often. Great "go to" content.
Thank you sir
Thanks
Thanks Scotty
Make sure the can of brake fluid is new too.
All right ! Red Arrows 😊
3 things to get your car to last 400,000 miles:
1. Don't buy a Fiat
2. Don't buy a Kia
3. Don't buy a Nissan
Exactly
Lol !
I owned a Fiat for 10 years
Cheapest maintenance and gas I ever had with a car
I’d purchase again!
That’s a typo, it’s 3.5 Liter
The brake fluid is low because the damn brake pads and rotors need changing.. not because of "wear and tear" if your fluid level is low it's because you have a leak or you need pads and rotors.. plain and simple.
Scotty the brake advice also applies to my Tesla.
Finally Scotty puts out a real car video instead of a video about politics or EV bashing.
Great
I had a Valve adjustment done on my car and at check out the mechanic recommended that I needed to replace my transmission fluid. I asked the lady WHY I would need to do that since I DID THAT MYSELF LAST MONTH. Then she asked how many miles I drive in a month, 600 at most. I just shook my head at her and asked if you have any more stupid questions for me, then she got mad at ME!!!
I use a marine cut off knob. Just open the hood turn knob .Now there is no juice . When i want to use the car turn other way. Car starts evey time
Watching this video and suddenly remembered I left my lights on. Thanks Scotty.
or low because your brake pad are worn out. will come back up when you push the brake cylinders in and put new pads on.
If you dodnt know that was his old house in the esrly part of the video where he is talking about batteries you know once he says the average battery is $140!! Sure there cheaper at Walmart wjere smart people get their batteries but if you go to the auto parts store that average price is probably closer to $200😮
i love the Cuckoo bird mimicking Scotty😂🤣🤣😂
Technicians at the dealerships are paid by how much they can sell so it stands to reason they'd try to sell you what you don't need. I worked for dealer service departments for over 20 years so I know all the tricks. I do most of my maintenance myself. If a repair sounds outrageously expense it usually is. I replaced my rear shocks and brake pads on my BMW for $350 with help from my husband and the dealer wanted $2000.
Wow Scott your teach me so much
I live in New England. My cars rust out underneath LONG before I could ever reach 400k miles.
Try the new vegetable oil SPRAYS. Won't harm the car and should make washing rock salt, etc. from the undercarriage easier 🤔
Tell us about transmission oil change mileage
Almost there 330000 2004 toyota tacoma. The only thing I've done is replace starter, radiator
