    Make sure you're in Airplane mode to turn off wifi and bluetooth. Those drain the battery pretty fast. I can get about 400-500 photos in burst mode 40fps. Usually about an hour plus at the race track or at the airshow with 1 battery. I have 4 extra spares for those all day shoots and will go through 3-4.

    The LP-E17 costs €65,99 in the austrian canon shop ( currently sold out ). Third party products for this type are easily available. If you are happy to pay € ~1.700 for this cam, you can afford 2 or more spare batteries.

    • @Vlay76

      I use Patona LP-17 batteries...they cost 25€ and you need to buy charger as well but the quality is same as original Canon batteries and I'm very pleased with the results.

    • @hamradioop5777
      @hamradioop5777 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are three problems with third party batteries with this camera which are worthy of consideration.
      1) The supplied Canon battery charger will not charge third party batteries.
      2) If you wish to charge the camera battery 'in' camera using a suitable USB-C charger and USB-C to USB-C lead, it will not charge a third party battery.
      3) If you wish to power the camera using an external USB-C charger and USB-C to USB-C lead, it won't work with a third party battery installed, or with no battery installed whatsoever.

    Thank you for your insight Matti, yes indeed that's true and i was anticipating this scenario when i buy the R8, So to solve the issue i did revamp my setup - For my photo-video-walk setup i bought mine with minimal Small-Rig cage and attached a coupler battery with a portable 15000MAH ANKER powerbank, which last me around 3 hours of video recording 4k 60fps and 2000 shots on my initial testing. through my 2 x 512gb PROGRADE V90 SD CARD straight on. • @thane5_3d
    @thane5_3d ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have had pretty much the same experience with battery life on my Canon R10, which uses the same LP-E17 battery. It also does not help that the charge indicator is very vague and gives you no percentage number, so you never quite know how much time you have left.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's true. When making the video the battery indicator had two bars and then 3min later it was blinking red.

    • @catalin-ap
      @catalin-ap ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unlike Sony, where on even the most cheap-o plastic APS-C from many years ago, you have full indicator with 0-100% percent at all times on the screen, when shooting, and it's quite precise with OEM batteries. You know if you are 20% left or 1-2%...
      However, on Canon, the recovering time from standby is very small, so the camera wakes instantly, better than with Sonys.
      AND you can program a button on the camera with the function "turn camera off". Which turns it into standby. That is a hugely useful way to conserve battery life, when using the R8, R10, R50 or whatever ML that has the tiny battery (unfortunately, the EOS M cameras do not have this function!), and it can substantially increase your mileage, per battery.
      Of course, only if you do photo (not video), and mostly if you do like a few photos now, a few 10 minutes later, a few 20 minutes later etc. If you are in a scenario where you constantly shoot or wait it shoot, it's easier just to get an R6 or R6 II or R7, with the larger battery.

      This would be only relevant if the % would be precise. In my samsung phone the last 10% of battery is not the same as first 10%. So i also dont know when it will die. I carry reserve battery and change it on r8 when there is only one stripe on the scale.

Not sure what is the maximum you could get but for sure I've gotten around 430 shots (most with EVF) on one charge with this technique and the battery wasn't fully dead yet. By CIPA ratings the R8 gets 150 EVF shots, Sony a7C whopping 680 - 4.5x difference! I wonder what Canon does differently to run the battery flat so fast,? Is it wrong to say the fact that the battery life is bad? Should I just ignore that or should I say the battery life is really good instead, which would be a lie. Every camera has something good and something bad. In this case that something bad is the battery life. In the video I said multiple times that I like the camera. Did you not hear that at all?

    • @jcloiseau

      @@mattisulanto and yet to title your video specifically on this contentious point, hoping and rightly so that using strong words would drive views.
      As you can clearly tell, that is also the direction the comment section went and this is the biggest topic of comments under the video. What I find annoying if I may refine my comment is this clickbaity approach that the algo is forcing creators like you to take to "exist" but in turns pushes a very "one note" and limited views rather than a more reasoned and 'boring" that it is a camera with some good points and some obvious compromises made to stick to a price point, target market and position

      @@jcloiseau Unfortunately that is the name of the game. If we want any views we have to come up with catchy titles. Everyone wants the views and the competition is hard. Another problem of course is that most viewers only watch a small part of the video and make their judgement based on that.

    • @jcloiseau

      @@mattisulanto You’re just making my point here. It IS dishonest by design to title the video like this because even you deep down recognize the Canon R8 all together and what it offers but you elected to be dramatic in the title. And I did watch the whole video as you too admitted that the battery probably was not full when you left.
      What’s sad about is that you are an influencer in the sense that I was discussing the R8 in another thread (can’t remember if here or reddit) and someone mentioned: “I heard some reviewer reported they only could get 109 pictures on a full charge” and that it discouraged them from buying it.
      I find that this is editorial dishonesty for the sake of views at the expense of balance. It’s perfectly fine from Camera Conspiracies because it is sarcastic by essence but you present your channel as informational, so when you say that it failed you and that you had to cut your walk short as a result (at the closing of the vid), you have an impact on potential customers.
      Anyway long story short, are you getting the g9 II? It looks amazing

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jcloiseau I don't think I was dishonest. I was really surprised and disappointed that the battery died so fast. I don't remember when was the last time a battery died before I finished my photo walk. The Canon R8 broke a record there.
      I can't ignore that and it would have been dishonest not to mention that.
      It was honest to say that maybe the battery was not 100% full, but the indicator showed full.
      As far as I understand nobody has said the battery life is excellent on the R8, quite the opposite. Even DPreview wrote "Very short battery life".
      And I repeat, I said multiple times that I like the camera.
      I can't help it if people watch only half of the video (not talking about you) and then make comments elsewhere based on that. It's unfortunate that so many only hear what they want to hear (not talking about you) and have only 1min attention span.
      I'm going to take the R8 out again and I'll turn off the airplane mode and see if that helps. I'll also take another battery just in case.
      The G9II looks really good, but I'm not going to buy it. I don't need that camera for anything and I'm very happy with my current cameras.

      There are many, many light weight system cameras from different manufacturers. I stopped using Nikon and moved to Fuji for just those reasons. I'm sure Canon make lots of excellent cameras. However this particular model looks, feels and apparently( from this and other reviews) performs like a cynically hobbled shadow of its upmarket siblings. It really looks like it was built to target the bottom end of the market. Which makes me sad.

    • @-grey
      @-grey ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stefanbadass5357 If only any of that were true, I wouldn't have needed to spend so much switching systems. I have a bunch of XF lenses I'd rather be using, but Fujifilm discontinued the X-E4. I have waited on lists for about year, and searched for alternatives becaseu Fujifilm haven't released anything both smaller and lighter than the R8.
      The XS-20 is only about 5 milimeters smaller and actually 30g heavier, plus only $200 cheaper.
      I figure for $200 and the same weight I get access to way better AF, and the light gathering of Full Frame so my f1.8 primes are lighter and smaller than the f1.4 Fujifilm equivalents. If I wan't something tiny, they even have an 28f2.8 pancake, and the XF18f2 was one of my favourite lenses so that's great, it's just old and unreliable. Mine kept losing AF functionality and almost ruined a trip to Ankor Wat.
      My second choice would hav been the Nikon Z30, still better AF than Fujifilm, plus no EVF so that's a bonus for me. Only problem is that they have so few lenses beyond the 24f1.7 which is more compact than XF lenses.
      Third choice would be the a7CII with the 35f2.8 which is smaller than the X100V, but heavier. It's got a deeper grip and a bit bigger lens, but by the time it's in your hand it's about the same as the X100V in thickness. That model is just too expensive.
      As for the "hobbled shadow" of the R8 it's got the sensor and colours of the R6II which I think are the nicest colours I've seen straight of camera in a long time. It's got the AF system of the R3, Jared Polin has even used to shoot pro sports, and complained about the battery only. And I don't personally care about FPS or IBIS for my work. So really it performs better than any Fujifilm camera will for me, becasue I won't be using any of the techy perks they've added.
      The X-T5 is the first time I feel like they've released an upgrade to the X-T2. Unfortunately I don't care about super mega pixels, and Fujifilm IBIS and AF still aren't very good. They have put a lot of effort into Sport and Wildlife shooting recently but I don't shoot those.
      Hence: Canon R8, because it balances size, weight, AF, performance, and price better than most things around. It was honestly pretty tight between the R8 and Z30 though.
      😂

      For sure. I call it "good va!use", but only if you don't mind your 1500 camera forgot to include ibis etc!
