My fascination with Romania started with videos like this about the beauty and peaceful nature of the rural areas. Their unique food, music and culture is fascinating.
Eric Donaldson said in his song the land of my birth "though some people say we are poor, but the progress you make my friend is not always how rich you are".
My daughter in-law a is a Romanian medical doctor, a resident cardiologist.
A very, very beautiful lady, she has been on maternity leave with pay for a year now and she is still entitled to another year of maternity leave to spend with my grandson.
My grandson receives an allowance monthly from the government as a citizen.
He will go to school virtually free to PhD level. Fees for citizens are very minimal.
    THAT IS SOCIAL WEALTH.
My son had his PhD in computer science in Lasi one of the best Universities. He did masters in Politechnica Bucharest one of the best Universities in Europe.
Romania has 4G network in most parts.
Accomodation is relatively cheap and beautiful.
My children have lived in the USA but they prefer Romania.
I will love to have a country home in rural Romania for my retirement.
Romania should not be compared to any country.
Romania is unique and rich in history, tradition, architecture and social responsibility.
That is some unique wealth very few countries can boast of.
    Thanks for your video.

    1. I'm tired of foreigners' old obsessions about poverty. I haven't watched the video on Sicily (which is poorer than Romania), but I am curious if there is something about poverty there. We're not a poor country. In fact, our economy has been booming for the last 20 years and it's going to catch up with the West pretty soon. Yes, we are not Germany, but... according to Eurostat, the purchasing power sits at 74% of the EU's average; the median wage calculated in PPP is higher than in Portugal and Greece; there are more working opportunities here than in many of the Western countries because our economy is far more dynamic, this is why we are able to import around 150k foreign workers/year from all over the world and still increasing. 2. I'm tired of the obsession with our gypsy minority and showing them riding carts on the streets. I never see people talking about the tons of marginalized minorities when vloggers travel to France or Spain for example. But Romanian gypsies are ALWAYS included in vlogs or documentaries. WHY?!?!? The fact that they don't work does not imply people discriminate against them. 3. I was mad when you talked about Schengen because it sounded like you admitted Austria's reason as being right. Austria was heavily criticized by the EU and there is clear proof Romania is NOT a route for illegal immigration. Anyway... I felt bad watching this otherwise interesting video.

Dear Eugen, firstly, we have to thank you for taking the time to address our video with as much vigor and depth as you did. You highlighted a number of interesting issues. We are very sorry if you misunderstood the Austrian part. We sincerely hope that you can imagine that we didn't mean it the way it came across to you. Thanks again for watching and for your frank words. Take care and best wishes!

I think that is more like a clash between a selfish "having fun", loisir culture where "wealthy" people at their retirement are traveling, enjoying cruises and of course being very important for the economy, an entire chain of industries, with a "work culture" where people at their retirement are keeping being active, socially integrated and earning money as long as their health and age is allowing them to. In the Western countries there are also people who are employed and still happy to live in the rural area, farming their little homestead, not traveling the world even if not "poor", but enjoying the horseback trips, and trying to make a little business of their hobbies. But you are right I also came to the conclusion that the poor people in the Western world are worse than in Romania. Because they can't afford a car not to say a cart and an workhorse while living off the social welfare. Romania was a land where historically the poor Swiss migrated to no doubt. I don't know if it wasn't towards the North Eastern Moldavian lands they were traveling to. But I am afraid that the communist period or after it erased the Swiss heritage of Romania.

Lovely video but I would like to point out that roma people who originate from northern india are not often discriminated against by romanians but because they are born in poverty, lack education and encouragement from parents to attend school they don't move forward. Their culture is based on working metals, music and day labour even in UK, Ireland gypsies (travelers) share the same labouring mentality instead of getting education and they live somehow in isolation from the british. It's just how their culture is.

Most of them get financial help from the state and some of them even get accomodation but still choose to live in poverty because this is their lifestyle. The westward raids were stopped only with the Magyar defeat of the Battle of Lechfeld in 955, which led to the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire in 962, a new political order in Western Europe. 1. Oktoberfest Munich might be the greatest Festival in Germany, but here, in Romania, especially in Transilvania that has a lot in international electro music festivals that brings foreigners each year like flies to a carcass (Untold, After Hills, TM Base, Electric Castle etc.) considerably fewer people have ever heard of this Oktoberfest thingamajingy. 2. The "real" Count Dracul doesn't exist. Vlad IIIrd, Voivode (Prince) of Ungro-Vlahia and the countries of Almaj and Făgăraș was Valahia's (not Transilvania's) country fair and just ruler and warlord that punished thieves, criminals and monstrous and proud invaders, protecting Europe. 3. The saxons that "left" the country were actually very profitably sold, the countries made some sort of a deal with a price/head of settler descendant. 4. Fun coincidence, Măgura, your "sweet escape" from the city, is also the name of a sweet little chocolate cake. 5. Poorest in EU? We have the richest country on the Planet in natural resources, history and culture. By GDP/capita, you mean? Highest growth since 15 years ago every year and still growing. 500% atm. We'll continue to grow unless another war on this ancient lands puts the economy on hold. Lots of work to do still. 6. Migration doesn't come through Romania, the veto has no real bases, as ALL the requirements for joining have been met for years already. Being in EU means you can travel without a passport of VISA anyway. Schengen Eurozone would only make businesses in both Romania and other EU countries LOSE 20b/day by waiting for trucks of merchandise to pass the borders. 7. Your saxon settlers have been going through forced maghiarization and their language is mostly Hungarian now, but some of their culture and traditions, while mixed with Romanian and Hungarian, have been kept. 8. Bran Castle's last owners were Queen Marie of Romania (from the British Empire) and King Ferdinand I (of the German Hohenzollern family) and it's their descendants' museum now. You're literally paying money to Germany's Royal Family too by visiting.

@@eedragonr6293 That was mean and unnecessary. I literally said there's lots of work to do still and that We are rich in resources, not richest in the world by gdp/capita, but We have a constant growth. Romanian countries are not known for having enough prosperous peace period to perfect its trade, they have been attacked constantly and kept down by empires for millennia and parts of them are still under occupation or became Romanian speaking enclaves outside Romania. My heart bleeds... Nor have these countries formed empires and conquered territories and nations. It's not the way, not in Our veins, not how We survived and We rather do Our Own thing or copy stuff We need from richer trading nations to learn how to get better than stealing, burning, pillaging, bombing, killing. We have ALOT of experience in defending Our lands, the gateway to Western Europe and surviving against all odds. Not so much in fighting others for profit.

Let me start by saying I enjoyed the video. But I know that those people who look poor and travel by carrige with horses. Those people own more land than any other European person I've met. And every time I go to a supermarket and have to buy all "bio" food they sell to us, I think of those people who can provide for them self's from working the land they own and have fresh vegetables anytime they want. And every time I go back to my city apartment that I pay rent for, I think of those people that you see, who are truly free and not closed between 4 walls like us. So I feel more sorry for the rest of us who are living in the good world. 😅

    Great Travel Video!
Ever since I read the first chapter of Bram Stookers "Dracula" I have been curious about the place. I mean - think of those great nature descriptions of Transylvania before the main character of the story enters the castle! It felt like that when you showed shots in this video of some peasants going by a horse carriage with a pig upon the carriage in this video!
That felt like the beginning of "Dracula" to me!
Amazing how beautiful this region in Romania is! Great beauty, great food it seems - especially since the locals seem to enjoy good food - the festivals must be some evidence of that!
I like the way you shoot your videos too: Many shots of yourself walking in a relaxed way. Something a little bit different from some travel videos I would suggest! You have a good voice. That in combination by the good music creates a feeling of being immersed in this region up in the Transylvanian Mountains!
Nice that you shot footage of animals too - the video footage becomes a little bit more "alive" because of that I think!
Something to be improved: Not much - felt like a great experience to me - I love the way your travel videos make me feel: Alive, vibrant, hungry for a good adventure not *blood* though!
    Great Travel Video!
If you feel like it take a look at the travel section of my homesite "Continuation" where I have posted many articles about many subjects connecting to an epic travel journey in South East Asia I did some years ago.

Romas or Ziganen belong in Penjab area ( India/Pakistan) and they migrated to Europe in XVth century. They are generally unwelcomed in contemporary Europe and considered "pests". France under prime minister Nicolas Sarkozy evicted thousands of Romas back to Romania in 2010 ( Romania officially joined EU back in 2007). French government handed out 100 euros to each of them as " an incentive".

A bit different than the Albanians of Switzerland, since the Gypsyes have been around here for many hundreds of years, all have Romanian names (or Hungarian or Turkish, depending on the area) and a majority of them don't speak the Gypsy (Romani) language.

I was just stating the fact they are a different ethnicity having the citizenship of the country they grew up in. Many roma are mixed and fully integrated in the society to the point you can't differenciate them from locals/native. Albanians and roma have of course no similarities in terms of Migration. Switzerland is just full of albanian "secondos".

I loved your video, very nicely done. Just to clarify a few sensitive things: 1) Austria denied Romania's entry to Schengen implying there are immigration routes going through Romania, when there is none, the routes are through Croatia, Serbia and Hungary. Austria is the biggest thief of Romania and has all Romanian petrol and gas , our commercial bank stolen from the Romanian people through big bribes and interference into Romanian politics...it is the most hated country in Romania, apart from Russia. So...yeah..unfortunately..they want another "big deal" from us to "allow " RO to Schengen....all the salt mines and resources which are many and rich in Romania. People are poorer in Romania than some EU countries because Austria, Holland, Russia and even Germany have been stealing our resources through bribery of some of the politicians, becoming 90% owners!!!!!!!!! and interfering in our political affairs. Well, this is true and people should know it! 2) Gypsies are not marginalized and some of them are extremely rich, but you don't show those. Schooling is free in RO but they don't like sending their children to school, jobs are plenty, actually there are so many jobs available in construction, hotel and food industry that we have to bring Asian people to do the work!!!!! it is simple..some of them don't like to work...they like to sing, play instruments, make coper pottery , they have their tradition, some of them are outlaws...but work or educate like a Romanian ...most don't like that....ok, I hope, you who read this...understands that RO was complete owner of its land and resouces in dec 1989 with zero international debt....to be able to enter EU or NATO< western countries forced ROmania to sell its land resources and banks for a mere amount of money and holding just a poor 10 or 20 % percent of what was all Romanian people's wealth. They forced us close down our industry, Romania was self sufficient in 1989, producing everything, forced us to import fruit and vegetables from their countries, foced us to make laws to be able to sell our land, Romanians lost jobs, many went to west looking for jobs abroad, Romania is becoming depopulated because our industry "disappeared" because thet's what Austria, Holland and germany desired!!!! and Russia whish is deeply in oil and gas business, through a third party.....Thank you for your attention!

I would repeat the same comments which I made on the other part of this documentary. I am from Pakistan and love travelling, though never visited Romania, which is indeed a unique country with a rich history, diverse landscapes, and vibrant communities, as depicted in the documentary I have watched. It's always inspiring to see how people from different parts of the world come together to support each other and create positive change, like the producers of this documentary helping poor people and hungry animals.
I wish to visit this country in the future in order to explore its beauty and meet its friendly locals. Travelling is a great way to broaden our horizons, challenge our perspectives, and create unforgettable memories. Love from Pakistan.

Everything you like and admire in the Transilvanian German culture have to be known as a perpetual issue of this land. The Saxons, actually german jewish, was invited to habit the Carpathian mountains areas being exempt from taxes. The Romanians, in the same period of time were treated as a second class citizens (as also the szekely) , even being all the time 70%of the population in Transilvania and they were the only taxes payers . Recently in Sibiu was erected a statue to count Brukenthal which was the one who interdicted to the romanians to walk to the paved streets of Sibiu, they were allowed to use just the sloppy streets. Today the problem is the same, all the west European big companies are selling in Romania more expensive than in the western countries, are paying four times smaller retributions for the employees and don't pay any taxes as "having no profit". This includes the Austrian/Russian companies which by the way are cutting whole mountains of forest (I didn't see nothing about this savage behaviour and the disaster of the "nice Transilvanian area") and in a good relationship with the corrupted politicians are not paying the taxes which would justify the losses. So Romania is maybe the richest country in Europe but the people are the poorest in Europe due to the invasive culture of business which suppose to be a honest one but as we know where are the money is also the corruption. You will see people in prisons for small tip but any western company paying no taxes (how) involved in any trial.
If you don't like the poorness of Romania speak with the western countries and EU leadership. What the "development" brought in Romania are the coloured glass balls or the sweet chemicals but in the meantime we lost the industry, the peoples, the resources and the traditions.

Dear Øyvind! That sounds like a great plan! Brasov is a wonderful city with plenty of things to see and do. For day trips, we would recommend visiting the nearby Bran Castle, also known as Dracula's Castle, which is a must-see attraction in the region. You can also take a trip to the Rasnov Citadel, a well-preserved medieval fortress that offers a stunning view of the surrounding area (and there is a big Dinosaur park for kids). For nature lovers, a visit to the nearby Piatra Craiului National Park or the Bucegi Mountains is highly recommended, where you can go hiking. We hope this helps! Happy family travels!

I'm Romanian on my mother's side and could be a dual US-Romanian citizen if I got all the paperwork completed. I did learn from my grandparents that their surnames are considered quite common over there, so I doubt I'd be able to trace anything back to my great-grandparents. How common are last names of "Popa" and "Denis?" I thought your video was fantastic and showed a side that I considered a bit more rustic than poor. I honestly didn't think "poor" at all when I watched the opening. I'd love to visit one day, but money is tight for everyone lately. I only wished my grandparents taught us Romanian.
