Apparently I just like making robots that throw things 😂
Thanks again Simon for having me, looking forward to future shenanigans
Phenomenal work!!
this thing is so freaking cool dude
Impressive piece of engineering!!
You’re a wizard! Amazing! Please take my money!
Would love to see a video breakdown from you on how the robot works!
Now use it to standardize flight numbers to actually mean consistent things and you will change the face of everything
this makes so much sense!
Fire idea
this is exactly what I hope they do.
It’s the right thing to do. So you know it won’t happen.
Truth
Ditto Flight can choose our flight numbers anytime 🤝 incredible work!
Don’t miss this opportunity Ditto!
Yes please
Yessss!🎉
@achillrobot
Legit question what exactly would this solve? Flight numbers are completely useless and always will be.
"Throw one is always a complete guess on what's gonna happen." Same here, man. Same here.
And…..most of the other shots in my round as well😂
Hahahaha!! Preach!
My first shot tends to be a good one. My second shorter than my first.
We already knew that Calvin was good, but im glad we got another showcase.
All the pros are good it's actually insane, anytime Simon decided to "face" the robot it had had a few calibration shots, and he just hits metal try #1 or is silly close, and I was asking him what the shot should be anyway most of the time
I think this is the 3rd disc golf robot this year - they should have a robot only competition with them like punkin chunkin :D
This is HANDS DOWN the best disc throwing robot yet. This is incredible.
Dunno, Still think the robot V2 from latest StuffMadeHere video is more promising in terms of controlling inputs/outputs. Check it out in case you didnt yet!
@@jaccob73 Not a chance.
@@jaccob73 I just don’t think that’s totally true. This one is more simplified and seems more accurate to me. It’s only going to get better. Maybe they need to go head to head to see which one can BE more accurate. Fire 50 shots each using a Tech Disc and see which one can hit a set target repeatedly and with repeatable spin/angle/trajectory.
@@TwoOneSe7en i stand corrected, i watched all the video now and this one is definitely more accurate and overall better, its just...more intimidating i guess :D
Have to get James and go recreate the Holy Shot with this thing.
Omg sweet baby Jesus YES
Dude id pay money to see that as a TH-cam special
Ooooooooh remember that Jomez series where they get a bunch of people to go try and recreate famous shots?
This thing would be awesome at that!
@jomezpro we need this for off season content.

20:29. That is a Stoat Simon, they are related to weasels. They are voracious hunters for their size.
That was cool to see. Such a cool little hunter.
I saw a dead one at my course. Thought it was a weasel
@@mattstroika453 short tailed weasel
Super cool to see one hunting. That's a pretty cool moment to see!
That’s a new disc name
Gotta try these ideas:
Throw your own distance drive, measure angle, RPM and launch angle with a tech disc, then set up the robot to be the same to see if the distance is the same.
Another idea is to see how far this robot can throw a disc on max settings / whatever settings achieve max distance. Would love to see that!
Exit velocity, not angle
I think this is one of the few tech disc suggestions that would actually work without custom firmware for the tech disc. DittoFlight and a human throw the disc in very different ways that could really mess with how a tech disc interprets data. No human has the disc spinning before release and no human pushes the disc straight downward on release. Tech disc uses accelerometer data to back figure what the disc is doing, so DittoFlight is going to mess up that reverse lookup algorithm and not get good data. I'd like to see a collab between Tech disc and DittoFlight, I think it could make tech discs simulated flight path way better and confirm DittoFlight's calibration.
Of the ones that have been done on TH-cam, this one is by far the most rational and usable. Can’t wait to see what 2.0 does
Ya, I could stand next to this one and not fear for my life.
18:13 This is just the coolest thing ever. They literally launched simultaneously and it almost looked like drone racing. So sick.
This is so much better than the other disc robots I've seen on TH-cam!
This is what happens when you build a robot to be practical instead of for a fun TH-cam video
The one that threw a disc line 800 ft or whatever a few weeks ago was pretty sick ngl. Very similar concept to this one
Need to start comparing disc. Take disc with identical flight numbers and see. Seems close enough to tell if discs are flying the same
This robot is almost perfect already. Controllable RMP, Hyzer, Speed, nose angle. Thing works amazing. You’ll never be able to control wind and exact disc topology but for what it is it’s amazing! I want one!
Was anyone else hoping the shot of the day was the Robot acing?
That's a short-tailed weasel eating a chipmunk. One of nature's most metal moments.

Nature happens on the Disc Golf course. I once had to put down a dying deer fawn that was hit buy a vehicle.
Simon is a true content genius. A video about a robot that can help evolve disc golf in ways we can't imagine and people are equally stoked on the nature moment. This is why I am a fan.
So cool seeing two disc golf throwing robots going head-to-head in the same video!
Seriously one of the best videos I've seen. Something incredibly satisfying about watching Ditto "throw" discs.
Every disc manufacturer NEEDS that robot. Would change the game forever.
Best one I have seen; all of the disc makers should be using it.
Incredible design. This robot does everything that the one we are building does, but honestly better. This is big for disc golf, can't wait to see where it goes.
Not only is that robot incredible but Simon. He is bringing always something no other does in the sport. Please bring back Beyond Disc Golf. 👊👊👍
This is one of the most fun disc golf videos I've seen in a while. Great job!
Battlebots fans defintely know Aren!!
Another amazing crossover with some of my most niche hobbies!
My favorite show is battlebots. My favorite sport is disc golf. This is one of my favorite TH-cam videos EVER
This machine takes the cake of all disc throwing robots! AWESOME! WELL DONE!!!! I LOVE the creative solution for the suction motor + the spinning disc! I think the indoor variability can be mostly attributed to the release point + machine dancing. This machine is completely rotational motion making the angle of release 100% critical. Whereas Simon's is much more linear. Maybe it's the rolling shutter effect, but it seems you can see the arm at higher and lower points in different rotations. Either way, this is an engineering feat!!
I would legit pay to watch a video series testing every mvp mold.
Same
I would imagine that MVP would have some interest in this machine for testing flight numbers 💯🤷♂️👍
Now you just need to load discs with the same flight numbers from different manufacturers to compare! Would love to see a comparison of "straight mids" and destroyer/timelapse distance drivers.
This isn't going to do anything. You can just do that yourself. Plus you are going to learn a lot more if you do it yourself. Doesn't matter how the robot throws. It matters how you throw them.
@@JB77776 the whole point is that humans can’t throw identical shots controlling as many variables as possible like this robot can. It would be incredibly interesting to see how discs with the same flight numbers actually compare to one another. Even the same disc in different plastics thrown identically which a human simply can’t achieve from a controlled experiment point of view.
Obviously from a playing standpoint of course you need to find out what discs work for you but that’s an entirely different point.
@@JoshuaGresham Ok we might not be able to create a perfect experiment but we have a pretty good idea of how all these different variables effect disc. We aren't going to learn anything from this that we don't already know.
@@JB77776 you dont get it, the point is just to see how different brands flight numbers stack up to each other. A robot will do that 10x more accurately than a human
@@ludvig7473 Ok so then what exactly will we learn that I can't tell you right now?
now try the Tilt 😂will that turn over at such high RPMs?
I can't believe I finally made an appearance on Simon's channel. That's me walking away in the background @24:25 :-D
Nice 2 secs of fame😂
Holy cow my nerd is soooooooooooo satisfied. Wow, what an entertaining video! Thank you Simon! ❤
😲.....Now I wanna see it rip a Time-Lapse on a lil anheiser and get that beautiful full flight at max distance!!
The release on that thing is so satisfying...
The thunk is so nice
I’m still noticing a decent amount of wobble. I love the ease of transport and not being super bulky, but being able to either mount it in place or make the base more robust to limit shaking and it will reduce the variance there. Million way to get her done, but that would be my approach. Thing looks sweet! Keep up the good work.
My favorite bot builder meets my favorite outdoor activity! I had this idea 15 years ago... But like I always say ideas are great, but execution is where it matters. Beautifully executed Aren. I never would have thought of a suction cup.
Golf’s standard test robot is called the “Iron Byron” named after Byron Nelson. I think this one should be called the “Iron Simon”.
Simon LizBOTte
18:14 Never have we seen two disc dance in the air together like this. The way they moved at different velocities and altitudes was truly amazing. I wish another shot of this.
That was an American Stoat, also called a Long Tailed Weasel. You can tell from the white underbelly that it not a polecat or mink.
thanks!
I've seen one before too. I have ants in my bedroom
Any disc manufacturer can benefit from this. Mass production!
A lot of confidence that the robot will release the disc at the right point. Imagine it released backwards at 50mph!
I had that thought too, lol. Wonder how safe it is to be behind that thing.
@@truthstands4evertrust the science
Wow this is the 3rd disc throwing robot I've seen! Stuff Made Here and We Make Machines have also made a some videos about their robots, but theirs are purely about max power. This is the first one I've seen that has this level of control, it's just mind-blowing!
Fascinating. Give us more shots.. LOL. Very cool. This can absolutely be used to develop flight numbers of discs as a standard. Once your baseline is set for flight numbers and the associated characteristics, you could then take your personal bag of "beat-in" discs and determine there associated flight numbers for them. Could be very interesting.
Absolutely incredible. I love the way he giggles after like every attempt of the robot, that's a man who is proud of his creation and just loves building these things.
Now to sell it to every single disc golf manufacture so they can do real tests, imagine the different plastics of each mold being able to fly the exact same! Please make this available to every disc golf manufacturing company in the least, open source it for the community so individuals or coaches use it as a learning tool. This would standaradize discs per plastic per mold, and building a bag to your arm speed and rotation based on the flight pattern of what you already have. You could find your most consistent arm speed and rotation, and find a disc that would fit in that spot for what you would want it to do. Every single release at the same angle and speed could do any shape and distance(to a certain max of course) based on just choosing the right disc and weight.
Been waiting for this for a long time! Simon's on it folks. I cant wait for real flight numbers.
I'm smiling ear to ear. You should send footage to someone like statmando who could flight track disc and color code metal, chains, aces...... Great video everybody
The best disc throwing robot I've ever seen (not many) but it seems like this is no doubt the best way to accomplish consistency from a very experienced engineer, Aren. Very impressed how he managed to account for all the different variables of the throw into the design. Keep this up!!
That is incredible!
That is so cool. I love watching Simon vs the robot on throws. Makes you really consider just how many things go into a perfect throw, and how differently humans and robots approach it with such similar results.
Who else went straight to the nature appreciate moment LMAO... that's a polecat!
Same! 😂😂
It definitely looks like a polecat, but we don’t have those?
Looks like a stoat to me.
I thought Mongoose or ferret but I don’t think they’re native to that area..?
That's an Ermine (Short tailed weasel) eating a chipmunk.
This is so badass! Love Blip and Tantrum, BattleBots and disc golf.. two of my loves. This is AWESOME, Simon! Thank you Aaron and everyone for your hard work and ingenuity!
Fascinating video. So much potential with robots.
Stoked to see Nathan from Ballistic get the shot of the day!🙌🏼
aight this is the best disc golf video.
This is just fun. Disc golf is fun, robots are fun, combining the two and coming up with some good challenges, love it. These are the types of videos that bring joy to the world.
That was a weasel that killed the chipmunk. Tenacious little creature! Great video as always.
Your BEST video yet, at least disc golf related. The video with your family is still the best.
The real question is.. can the robot make the tilt fly straight!
20:17 holy cow an innova polecat eating a gopher!
Gopher. Not a squirrel.
Chipmunk. Not a gopher.
Regardless... Polecat ftw!
Best use of a robot I've seen. And lol @ the nature appreciation moment.
Simons channel has turned into nat geo documentaries 😂
sooooo love that robot, (also loving that there is a bit of feel and knowing your disc, and "luck" involved in an ace) but i so want a video with a drone and all the same speed discs and compare flight paths.... i could spend HOURS with that robot.... TAKE IT TO THE MVP WAREHOUSE AND GO NUTS!!!!!!!! just the comparing same disc in diffrent plastic makes me daal exited!!!! MORE ROBOT CONTENT PLEEEEEEASE!!!!
Pretty cool from a R&D perspective. Have Brad Richardson buy one lol
This was honestly no other word but beautiful to watch dude. Great video! Get this bot on tour & involved in all future disc/course design processes
I need weekly content of Simon playing with this new toy! The things he could come up with. 🤯
The guy is from across the country. I hope he or others do videos of it though. This is amazing
@@InbredJed82060 Yes I know, I was mainly joking, but I do hope that we get to see more content of this machine in action. How cool would it be to see similar discs with similar flight numbers thrown over and over for consistency and to see just how close those flight numbers are. We might even get into data about disc speed, rpm, etc that is optimal for a discs flight relative to flight numbers. I’m both a huge battlebots and disc golf fan so I was more than excited to see Aren there. Makes me more of a fan of Blip now too.
This is incredible!!! Love the technical breakdown. Dude is a Genius.
I think we all wanted to see how far it could launch a distance driver!
It was limited to 70 mph
Max speed was already answered, but there is a video from "disc bazooka" that launched a driver 1200 ft. It is a pretty new video.
@@kimmomatikainen1843 I didn't ask for the answer, I wanted to see the answer!
If I were to build a thing to do that it'd look a bit different, big fan of what the "We make machines" crew pulled off with theirs, it's properly silly
This has to be the coolest thing I have seen in a long time!!!! Love the simmey
You need to call that thing ThrowBot.
"SpinLaunch" is taken already sadly.
This is BEYOND cool. Man, I didn't think it was possible to get something this consistent with all the variables, especially just balance, vibration, and release point of the machine itself. Bravo!
This contraption is sweet! Definitely the future of discgolf👌
Eff that Future. BORING
Future for disc R and D perhaps.
This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Love MVP so much for supporting this stuff. Love Simon's hype. What a cool tome to be a disc golfer
This is one of the coolest disc golf videos of all time.
Love it. I mean for me this is the most exciting discgolf video I have seen since I remember :-D. I mean the robot might be exactly precise, but there is still that "butterfly effect". Even if there is no wind at all the air still can move. A bird can fly by and and create some stream that can affect the flight. Even if you throw it indors and then walk for the disk and beck it might move the air so it affects the flight. I mean - it might not be perfect yet, but still its much better in getting the flight numbers more telling than anything or anyone :-D. Great job...
I love how the robot operator opens up a bit as the video progresses. I missed his name and am too lazy to go back, but dude was awesome. Loved seeing this.
His name is Aren Hill. He builds and competes in Robot Wars. He was captain of the bot Tantrum and then started another team that built Blip.
MORE OF THIS PLS, like A LOT MORE. Appreciate you Simon!
To cool! Heard about this machine mentioned on NHRL. And then this thumbnail popped up.
Thanks Simon for taking time from fam and the game to hang with aron. And thanks for all the bots aron
Hands down one of the coolest things to ever be done in disc golf. So much potential to change the industry for the better. Not to mention the many hours of youtube footage/training you could put together now with this robot.
Best disc throwing robot I have seen by a mile! The suction solution is brilliant.
Great job, fellow nerds!
Simon, I always look forward to your videos. This one is very cool for a couple of reasons. First, the gee-whiz aspect of the robot along with the amazing design, engineering and fabrication by Aren. Second, your bringing it to light and being so positive about the technology. It would be great to see a disc golf robot faceoff between the different robots across representative challenges (distance, flex shots, etc). I suspect the robots would need a pro caddy to select the disk appropriate for the shot, along with the estimated speed and rotation.
Suction cup?! Brilliant! This is the first "spinny" attempt that looks good I have seen. Well I should say this is the best I have seen, but I was thinking something with rollers was going to be the first working attempt with consistency. This proved me wrong and I LOVE IT!
Actually insane. I remember Simon teasing this on podcasts a long time ago. Kudos to all involved!
Weasel! That's great y'all got to see that. Disc golf produces so much great accidental nature documentation.
Soo Marketable!!! hope you make a bunch of these and sell them to the manufactures, make the area of standardized
flight numbers!!
I love you Simon. Keep it up Aaron. Damn near the coolest thing I’ve ever seen, I’m throwing like a robot from now on…. 😂😂
OMG! I love BattleBots and am familiar with Aren's teams and robots (Blip, Tantrum). This is the mashup I never knew I wanted! I'd love it if Aren showed up on your channel again.
Weasels are incredibly reclusive! Be glad you saw one!
This is absolutely the coolest content video to date! There are SO many fun things you can do with this!
I would love to see it throw a tech disc for stats.
This is a super cool video, pretty sure that's the first nature murder appreciation we've seen 😂
But the best part was the RPM bit in the middle, so all the guys claiming that they have so much power that they can't throw a destroyer because they're too flippy, actually they just don't know how to spin a disc.
Wow it's Aren! I heard about this on NHRL. This is amazing. Well done Aren
After watching this video earlier and commenting I’ve had time to think about this whole thing and as cool as this robot is one thing I can say is my respect and amazement at you Simon and your ability to throw a disc has grown massively now seeing how such minute adjustments change the discs flight
I know there are a lot of disc throwing robots out there now. But they are still all so exciting and interesting. I cannot wait to see where these projects go.
Probably most mesmerizing video I’ve seen!!!
That one off the top of the basket looked so good, I even yelled at it to go in.
Gotta bend that release for the 4K RPM shot. Another great Bot!
Incredible. Thank you for sharing. So much fun AND so interesting.
Are we just going to gloss over the fact that he belongs to a group called "Throw Things and Bicker?" LOLOLOL. That's AMAZING! Also, THIS is the type of stuff that should be viral. Ingenuity, engineering, fun, hard work, innovation. This stuff is just amazing. Well, done!!!
Dude!!! I wanna see more of this thing testing out discs! What distance driver flies the farthest, or stability differences. So much consistency! Too cool!
What a cool idea! If you're unsure if shots variability is because of the discs you should just go and fetch the disc you just threw and use it again. With more solid standings to reduce vibrations this machine will be beyond consistent. Really cool piece of engineering, I'm looking forward to seeing more of this wonderful robot!
Ball golf had its “Iron Byron” robot (after Byron Nelson, a consistent ball golfer). This robot is far more complicated, with all the factors involved in a disc golf shot. Also, instead of hitting an object, this robot has to launch it. Amazing job, guys!
It’s been a long time since I watched an entire TH-cam video without any skipping around. This was awesome buddy
