      truthfully, flight numbers were never meant to describe every possible flight path. They instead, only compare each disc to the other discs from the same manufacturer.
      the example I keep seeing, where people forget this, is when people say "the Luna is a 3/3/0/2 but that's wrong because its nothing like an Envy" well, those flight numbers don't mean it will fly like an Envy, they only mean that the Luna is more stable than a Fierce, and faster than a Challenger.

    This is exactly what the industry needs to standardize disc flight numbers. Every approved disc should have to be thrown by a machine like this (of course at normal disc golf speeds) and get actual, correct flight numbers for every disc. I would try to get with companies or just throw every disc many many times with that thing and make your own unofficial (official) numbers. Idk, this thing has to have a productive use right?

    • @jcjcjones33

    • @ogdiscgolfer
      @ogdiscgolfer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I started on a journey to see about a machine like this a couple of years ago for that very reason... one of the problems is the lack of Quality Control and plastics that make the flight numbers vary widely among the same disc. I love the idea of standardizing, but there are so many variables that come into play that it will take someone way smarter than me to figure out. These guys look way smarter, so hopefully they can do it! :D

    • @ericjepson3765
      @ericjepson3765 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ogdiscgolfer correct. A DX wraith wouldn't have the same numbers as a champ wraith.
      Intelligence has some to do with it but at some point it just becomes patients, number crunching, and elbow grease.

    • @ogdiscgolfer
      @ogdiscgolfer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ericjepson3765 I agree... I was speaking a little tongue in cheek about intelligence. Because of the fickleness of plastics, even in the same run you can have a wide variety of flight characteristics so you would need to do a very large sample size of each run to get an average flight number, but even that wouldn't allow us to nail down specific flight numbers so that you and I could just grab any disc with a certain set of flight numbers and be sure that it would fly the same. We could get closer/better than the system we have now, but there is always going to be a lot of variance due to the process. That said, they created the perfect machine to get us as close as possible. :D

    • @wherehouseedm
      @wherehouseedm 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      so like, i like the idea but:
      I have some discs with -2 turn that start to turn less than 100ft from my hand, and some discs with -2 turn that turn 200+ft down the fairway. but each of those turn 2x what a -1 turn disc of the same speed would do with the same release. so, basically, both discs have an accurate flight number, but the flight paths are never going to be the same.
      this is primarily because the rating system only goes from -5 to +1. there is no possible way anyone could ever describe the flight of every disc with only 7 turn ratings, even taking speed and glide into account.

    It is so crazy that it took building an insanely high powered machine like this just to beat David's record by ~200ft. Yeah that is a pretty good margin, but for that amount of power I would have expected to easy double the distance a human could achieve. Just shows how absolutely insane David's throw was for a human to break 1000ft.
    I would hypothesize that you are still leaving distance on the table with this machine thanks to aerodynamic drag on the lightweight discs moving at that high velocity. I would love to see this thing throw a heavier disc, like a machined aluminum one to cut through the air better. A part two where you throw the rulebook out the window, and try to optimize a custom disc for the sole purpose or squeezing maximum performance out of the machine would be awesome to see.

    Great project! The way you solved the issue with the whole device vibrating after the launch of the disc was amazing. I always wondered how the people at Project Spinlaunch dealt with this, since they should have to deal with the same issue as well, but so far I never have seen it being adressed in one of their videos. Now it‘s pretty clear they must do something similar to your solution or else their device would get ripped apart pretty quickly.

    Centripetal would be the bending inwards. What you did bending that was centrifugal. The block weight was being forced outward causing the arm to bend. I never heard centripetal until now so I guess I learned something new today lol

    • @stevencatone
      @stevencatone 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was looking for someone else who caught that before I made my own comment. Centrifugal force is also what drains the waters from your clothes... centripetal force would be the force keeping it pressed to the inside of the drumwall.

    Doesn't the radius of the throwing arm affect the spin rate? If i build a machine that moves straight at 200mph, the disc has no spin. In discgolf usually the goal is to move your arm across in a straight line aswell (i know the wrist still rolls). Does it really simulate a throw with such a small radius?

    • @We.Make.Machines
      @We.Make.Machines  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Exactly, the straight line is a misconception. The effective radius of a human throw, i.e. the hip, torso, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and finger rotation all averaged out is equivalent to the effective radius of our machine. So the human and machine are doing the same thing, rotating around a radius, the human just has way more radii linked together with joints. Our rpm to speed slope ends up roughly equivalent to a pro disc golfer, and this is also adjustable.

    Also in case you make another version, this seems to be a "left handed" version of the machine due to the direction it's spinning. Is there any way you can please make a "right handed" version?
    Final thought, please do a video testing the flight of all the overstable drivers they sent when thrown around 800ish ft❤❤

    Music volume is a bit too loud, especially at the start. Didn't really like the disc trail animation as it obscured the disc - ideally have it lag the disc a bit.
    Otherwise great vid and a good design.
    A container of water as the counterweight and opening it on release would be interesting. Less metal smacking into things and easier to tune for different discs. Just don't forget to refill it!

  • @URAZKIVANER
    @URAZKIVANER 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    This machine should be tested in regular pro speed with each disc to improve the sport and disc manufacturing. By determining the exact launch angle and speed you could test the actual numbers of a disc and the actual physics of the sport. Of course you have to have the perfect conditions such as almost no wind what so ever . Or you could just find an equation to bypass the effects of the wind and tell you the number needed... BTW: You could actually be able to create a disc golf simulator or launch monitor using your machine's data just like golf. It could even be just a phone app because no such speeds are necessary like real golf. A good phone camera would be sufficient even for a pro ;) . But anyways this is the only successfully working prototype that I could see on the internet for disc golf so far . Kudos to you guys !!!
