    Great Video, I am doing a lot of docked gaming and loving the choices it provides.
    Some of my exp highlights , if you are using steam controller with dongle you can even wake up steam deck from sleep by just hitting steam button on controller, like any other console.
    Older titles with wide screen mods runs flawlessly.

    There should have been a known issues section, I will list them here from long term usage of steam deck on TV:
    1. Upscaling with FSR from 720p to 4k is in many games I tried is more performance heavy that native 1080p
    2. Using 4k on steamdeck on 4k resolution lags out the menus(manly when playing other games)
    3. Sometimes when starting deck from sleep while docked it has trouble deciding between TV or build-in screen
    4. Crashes or not uncommon
    5. Nintendo pro controller has tendency to disconnect alot

    • @masoncombs7799

      Turning off rumble fixes the pro controller. It a bummer not to have rumble but way less annoying than the disconnects

    • @kimura317
      @kimura317 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a workaround for the Nintendo pro controller issue: disable controller rumble in the game. For whatever reason, this stops the frequent disconnecting for many people.

      I have not experienced menu lag at 4K since June of 2022. They've fixed it as far as I can tell.

    • @MatthewWilliamsX
      @MatthewWilliamsX ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. What exactly is the comparison here. Is the display natively 4k and 1080(no fsr) is better? Is the "native" 1080 allowing a virtual super resolution of 4k?? Are there 2 different display devices being referred to here???
      2. Is the menu lagging or is the game too demanding at 4k? Is this -only- when the game is also 4k?
      3. I've heard of this issue before. I'm surprised that it still has trouble remembering your display preferences.
      4. Crashes *are* not uncommon. Certain use cases don't play nice on deck. If you are suffering them often you may need to do some additional tweaking. User discretion is advised.
      5. Nintendo... NISM

    Cool video! I'm a basement dwelling PC gamer, so I don't do much actual gaming on my Deck at home. It's mostly a fun tinker-toy for me to mess around with, but I would love to have a nice dock setup for when I need to dig around in desktop mode.
    One big thing I got out of this video was an overwhelming sense of loss and regret at having given away my late-era Sony WEGA trinitron TV a couple years ago. Really wish I had that for some sweet retro gaming on my deck. It would be perfect for that.

    When speaking about controllers and the DualSense specifically it's worth noting that some features of the controller will only work when connected with a wire for supported games. Spider-Man and Deathloop, for example, will use the DualSense adaptive triggers, but only with a wired connection, and only when Steam Input is disabled (they need to be able to communicate directly with the controller without abstraction).

    This video came just in time since I am starting to shop for a dock/hub. I just get nervous when I see issues with the iVoler and Jsaux alternatives, and the Valve dock would mean I have to take off my Deckmate every time. A couple questions, Gardiner:
    1. If I am running 1080p on the deck with FSR and pushing to a 4k TV, will I need a 60hz capable dock? Mostly want to do this for multiplayer indie games and emulation, not AAA.
    2. Are you familiar with the fairly new Syntech Dock? It looks interesting and capable.
    3. We need to get Anker to make a dock - they have great products and hubs already, they'd be perfect for a quality dock.

    If you're going to buy a monitor, look for one with USB-C KVM switch with power delivery. That way, you will only need one cable from the screen and you can switch between another computer and the Steam Deck and still use the same mouse and keyboard... I personally have a Gigabyte M27Q, it's almost perfect... It lacks usb-c power delivery, but it does charge 10W... So even if the battery depleting, it's usually enough to keep me happy during a gaming session. :)

    I use a 2 meter (6.6ft) long usb-c extension cable and 90 degree connector, both from JSAUX. This along with the official steam deck dock. This combo works quite well and I don't have to deal with pairing or configuring controllers as I'm simply using the steamdeck handheld instead! As a bonus I also get ethernet which means I can use steam link to use the steam deck as a steam controller with minimal lag to my desktop machine running 4k. Games like Talos Principle and Control work great for this! (BeamNG Drive too when it wants to cooperate lol)
    Until the December 2022 patches, connecting the steam deck to my TV flat out didn't work but now it's nearly perfect in game mode which is rather nice. Deskop mode is still stuck at 30Hz. Added Google Chrome to steam and I use that to stream youtube sometimes. It works well but at 4k it spins up the fan quite a bit and occasionally the audio drops out (although I think that is a Linux hdmi bug).
    BTW shot out for use of DOOM64! I just so happen to be on map 20-somthing playing the Steam version on the deck!

    Once I got my hands on a dock, this was the first thing I did. Played the entirety of Rage 2 on my Steam Deck with a PS5 controller and my 42" monitor. Currently enjoying Deep Rock Galactic through the same way. Though at 720p with all settings on Ultra, it runs at a nice smoothe 60FPS. 1080p and it drops below 45 at home base.

    Very informative video. I have an official dock and a 3rd party dock from an Amazon seller named Waarky. I prefer the Waarky dock's form factor because it has room for my SD's case. I mention this because the dock's maximum resolution is 1080p on my 4K TV. If I try to bump the default resolution up to 4K on the SD's external display options, my TV's screen goes black. PLAY YOUR DECK ON YOUR TV.
    It straight-up replaces consoles.
    I bring my Deck to people's houses with a USB-C hub and play Jackbox games or beat'em ups like Shredder's Revenge. When everyone goes to bed at my place, I'll bask in the glow of the TV and play blockbuster titles from my couch. It rules. Way better experience than dealing with a laptop or something hooked up to your TV, or paying the Console Tax for games you've owned on Steam for years.
    I play docked using my old PS4 controllers that are otherwise unused in my house. Only downside I've occasionally experienced is the bluetooth signal isn't always strong, and I'm not sure the cause. Regardless, not enough of a problem to stop me.
    Warning, JSaux and cheaper Hubs / Docks conflict with CEC connections. I use a NUXOA dock with my TV's CEC connection and there are no conflicts.

    Will always prefer M&K when docked. Nothing against controllers - just - I rarely used controllers growing up. When I use them now it feels weird.
    Using the steam deck as a controller is an acceptable compromise but I'll always remap the "default" controller input into their M&K counterparts... It just helps my brain to wrap around it. Controller inputs are weird. *shrugs*

    Claiming that "games look better rendered at 1080p and then upscaled to 4k, than they do when rendered at native 4k" is completely subjective, and is down to your personal opinion.
    The game assets are made for a specific resolution (whether it be 1080p or 720p or whatever) when you run the game at 1080p and scale it to 4k, all the pixels are blurred together, to create what you perceive as "better"
    When you run the game at the displays native resolution, no scaling is necessary and the pixels are presented as intended by the games developer.
    A good example is when you try to scale a old SNES game, linear scaling will blur everything, and produce what you perceive as "better". In reality, most people who love retro games, and pixel art games in general, will prefer the un-scaled, un-blurred look.

    While it is a nice idea to have it be the new gaming console.
    A. It needs the dock and Hdmi cord.
    B. Output is only 800p and 4k tv will look bad. Literally a Nintendo switch will look better.
    C. You can upscale menus but nobody cares about that.
    D. Upscaling technology is not good enough or powerful enough to make 800p to 4k look good enough. If you want 1080p then why not just get a ps4 or xbox one?
    Steam deck is better for handheld only. But if you do want a bigger screen without worrying about resolution or upscaling there is Nreal Air glasses. It's not VR. But AR. Your screen becomes 130" larger with oled display technology. Its a better choice I think.

    Actually, what I really want is for the Steam Deck to be the Steam Controller 2.0, with added functionality assignable to its screen.

  • @bland9876
    @bland9876 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The steam deck is one of the weirdest devices out there because unlike all the other devices it comes pre-hacked allowing you to access a desktop mode without you having to do anything and then secondly you can connect any control you want to it whereas the other ones like the Xbox and the PlayStation they forced you to use specific controllers and so you don't get to choose which one you want.
    When I say you can use any controller on the Steam deck I mean I have controllers that say 2004 on them and have numbers instead of letters for the buttons.
