I like how in this adaptation, Liu Kang doesn't start as a humble fighter like he usually is in the games. He's skeptical, angry, and impulsive. Over time, he overcomes his emotions and learns what it means to be the Chosen One.
I actually like that a lot, I've actually been trying to find other movies/series where a 'chosen one' doesn't even believe in all the prophecies about him.
I mean, The Soundtrack alone is one of the greatest in movie history. All of these lame cookie cutter Marvel/DC movies pale in comparison. They lack atmosphere and always fail at boasting a killer synth driven soundtrack to carry scenes. Mortal Kombat and the first Resident Evil movie had amazing scores imo
One of the best camera angles I've ever seen. When I saw this in the theater as a kid and they went from the back of his heels walking up the stairs to zooming out and capturing the scenery like that I was amazed.
I always felt the actor for Liu Kang did a really good underappreciated job in his portrayal. Liu is a perfectly rational skeptic of the whole situation until he sees enough evidence to convince him this really is Raiden; then he pretty much just says fuck it and decides to roll with the logic that all his ancestors stories were real.
Between the creative liberties, budget affordances and beautiful nuances creating its own homage to the Mortal Kombat story, this film truly deserves a large chunk of the praise it gets for being the first truly good film based on a video game. It's not one for the purists though it definitely felt like it understood the soul of the source material which is something they can't deny.
Watched the movie the other night, it still holds up to this very day, especially with the music at the very end. The intro to raiden is badass as hell! Christopher Lambert really captured raiden perfectly, and Robin is still Liu Kang to this day!!
The thunder was so loud in theaters back in 1995 (when I was 9 years old). To this day, I crank up the volume on my headset during the thunder sound effect in order to relive that memory.
Lol, I literally just got back from Ayutthaya just now. I was thinking the same thing as I was climbing up the middle of the three temples thinking, "man, that looks like the same place shang tsung took that dude's soul!"
I was there last summer. Its quite amazing to see the real thing. The scene at 2:08 is actually filmed at a different temple nearby (I forgot which one but it had a lot of chicken statues for sale). When I walked through into where the scene was made I knew I had seen it before. Just fyi, the place where it was filmed actually had a roof over it centuries ago.

The Raiden in this movie did a damn good job! If only they could capture this same vibe and make a Mk movie today. Nothin has come close to this one since. One of the best scenes being “REPTILE”!!

I love this movie. Aside from Bruce Lee's masterpieces, this is the most sound and accurate representation of martial arts I have seen. I studied Taekwondo for two years (first degree black belt was as far as I went) but, I can tell there are many superior fighting styles from this film. Namely, Muay Thai, judo, and whatever the Shaolin monks do-I don't know what it's called. Fans of martial arts should check this out.
Funny enough even with the limited Graphics of the Arcade, they tried to make the moves accurate in the game as well. Each move you see even something as simple as a punch and a kick was filmed live.

This movie was my childhood watching Mortal Kombat, when movies back then were awesome in those days. Robin Shou is the best Liu Kang character ever, and I loved the song to this movie.
I love the fact that this film takes it self very serious. Even being a film based in a game, still the creators deals with the story and the characters with all the heavy tension and drama that a thriller requires. And it kind works! Hollywood films now a days have jokes, gags, quotes alluding established elements of pop culture, proving that the film don't trust it self; or that the producers are so despereted to rip us off off every single penny we have, so they use the film as advertisement to sell us all kinds of crap that somehow manege to became famous and eternalized in the imagination of they sons of the babyboomers. This 1995 film don't. They just tell there story and that's pretty much it. That is the stuff that I miss so much, a unpretentious film, that don't want to change the industry, the culture, or even the entire fucking world.
In the beginning when Liu Kang goes upstairs and all these monks meet him in front of beatiful temple and this music plays is just brilliant scene. Thomas Anderson is a genius!

I remember seeing this is the cinema when I was a kid (I was already a fan before watching it), when I saw Raiden I fucking freaked, because I was going to see my favorite Mortal Kombat character played by a live actor!
I think Robin Shou's Liu Kang is awesome because he just seems more like an average guy who happens to have a background in shaolin-like discipline rather than the whole "I was born to protect earth realm and serve Raiden act".

This movie still holds up, The characters are really well done (even inspirational when considering Kano.) They even captured how Raiden can be kind of a dick.

But it's all funny, saying to Raiden that he has been watching too much television, as the lord or god of lightning that would be something under his control (electricity/technology) especially if you open it up to a White guy and how it parallels with their gods of fire, knowledge or thunder.

The games can't get him to look halfway as good as Robin till this day.
