      @@drarov91 He has all the other shots. I saw him block a few backhand returns and hit some decent topspin drives. So there's your answer.
      The fact that he doesn't hit enough topspin backhands for YOUR taste - and let me guess, you either don't play tennis or pretty poor at it and so aren't a connoisseur of the game - doesn't make the total anything less than 'variety'. If anything, the one shot that seemed to be missing in this match was the forehand slice. Ruud does that one very nicely....
      [Btw: I am a very experienced tennis player and have played lots of tennis at county standard. My game is very similar to Dan's - without the intelligence sadly - but I hit way more topspin backhands than he does. I'm not sure why he doesn't do it - he has the shot......]

      @garrusv ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danguee1 agreed. Dan likely avoids the top spinner to preserve consistency. I noticed when he did go for it a lot more a few years ago, he lost a lot more of those critical points. Also, today's game of defensive two handers just isn't friendly for the one hander. Anyways, I also think Dan's slice bh sets up the rest of his general game plan, which seems to set traps for weak returns. Dan is a patient player who clearly understands he doesn't have the power to blow opponents over, so he has to depend on his guile.

    Evans has been playing lights out this entire tournament. Krajinovic, Rublev, Fritz, and now Paul. Despite his lack of power and height, he makes up for it with his smart tactics. Neutralizing opponents with the slice, patient groundstrokes and sharp angles, and the well-timed net game. Evans finally showing everyone what he’s made of.

      - He's been to the 4th round of the US Open and the Aussie Open
      - He's beaten numerous top 20 players

    It’s not that the tour isn’t top heavy anymore, or that it’s a “weak next gen” it’s that the tour is disgustingly stacked with deep talent from top to bottom. No wonder it’s hard to stay consistent when everybody above the top 100 has the raw talent to beat anybody any given night

    • @pureffm
      @pureffm ปีที่แล้ว +37

      This is why the GOATs are the GOAT's, the great players like Roddick who could beat everyone else could not beat Federer for their entire career. Now in the weak era, with the GOAT's slowly fading, there is a group of 10 players that can win tournments, and it switches. Their lack of experience means they don't yet have a strategic game plan to win against every other player. Zverev, Sinner, Alcaraz are on their way, but they are stil vulnerable!

      That's what I always say about sport - anyone can beat anyone else on any given day. That's why they have to play the game. Just because we've gone through a period where 3 players dominated the tour doesn't mean we don't have very talented players now. Maybe we won't have 3 who dominate (personally, I thought that was boring and had given up on watching tennis), but we'll have a variety of players with their strengths and weaknesses. As a Medvedev fan, I want him to win every match and tournament he plays, but realistically it's just not going to happen because there are too many other players who are just as talented and can win too. (I think a lot of this talk comes from the fans of the big 3 who keep wanting to prove that their favorite player was the best ever and no one will ever come close. Which they probably won't, but that's ok because I don't think any of the "next gen" players think they can either.)

      @smurfette1509 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@mrsjake1828 I think we share a lot of views here. I recently started following tennis again and I'm amazed at what I think are the number of players, both men and women, that are talented overall (not everyone) and fun to watch. I don't believe in this concept of weak era just because there aren't a few players that dominate year after year, which can get boring.

    Both players applauding each other, great to see such respect. On another note, everyone but Careno Busta now seem knackered

    Unbelievable match! This shows how good literally everybody on the tour is these days. No one would have expected an Evans vs Paul match to be of this caliber

    this was an incredible match for both players!!! Evans really had to keep his UEs in check to beat Paul. Paul has been playing some really good tennis lately.

    Tommy Paul was playing lights-out tennis, particularly in the first set. Dan Evans did well to absorb everything Paul threw him and neutralise his opponent's game.

    An even match by the stats. Paul was 2/8 on break points and Evans was 2/4. Not much separating them in serve and return. Paul had more success winning 2nd serve returns and more total points. Dan toughed out an even match with one break in set 2 and one in 3, to go up 2:0 over Paul. Next time, Tommy!

    Great match, these type of engagements are more rare these days because most players hit w so much depth and power it is hard to woven in the touch shots like lob Alice or drop shots consistently over a match, these two speeders hit just at the fast but too fast pace to give us great diversified entertainment

    Evans gets a lot of surprising wins because his game is different. He slices his backhand and gets to the net, and it really disrupts a lot of players' rhythms because they're just not used to that kind of play.

    To be 175cm and competing with guys who are usually 185cm + means you have to be incredibly gifted. It doesn't get said often enough because of what he did but Evans is still a remarkably good player.

    Wah Wah Wah! What an amazing competition! Paul just won hot Alcaraz, but was quickly defeated by Evans. Evans is a player that sometimes can give the world a surprise, but he needs consistency.
