I was a studio engineer in the mid eighties and that drummer(Scott Travis) booked a Friday night in my studio in Virginia Beach to record a demo to take Los Angeles to see if he could make it big. He actually told me he wanted to be the drummer for Judas Priest. Dreams really do come true. He’s been with them now for 33 years. He is one of the very best ever! He’s best known for the speed of his feet on those kick drums. He is also just shy of 7 feet tall, you can tell when he stands at the end of the song. Richie Faulkner the guitar player playing the Flying V was playing a lead ata concert a couple of years ago while he was having a heart attack. They said he survived because the ambulance was back stage and the hospital was only down the street from the venue \mXm/

Rob Halford is a mature vocalist. He may not be able to do the insanely acrobatic vocals of his youth, but he still has an awesome voice.

Judas Priest is another Pandora's box. Rob Halford is possibly my all time favourite vocalist.
Songs to check out (live versions):
    - Victim of Changes
    - The Sentinel
    - Dreamer/Dreamer Deceiver
    - Diamonds and Rust
    - Desert Plains
    - Starbreaker

Kick drums aka bass drums. 2 big circle drums at the bottom front. They are actually just big ass drums turned sideways. Foot peddles are used to hit the kick drums. Double bass drums is an acquired taste. Some metal heads like the double bass drum sound and some don't. Metal like any other music is subjective so some listen for lyrical content, some for vocal flare and some for killer music. For some of us it depends on the song. Some of Megadeth and Metallica's music has great lyrical content and some of it is just really great music. Loved the reaction. Love how you are branching out to other styles of music. Your girl Morrissette officially one me over today, that's another story, for DM's perhaps.

Do yourself a favour and listen to Judas Priest's live version of "Diamonds and Rust". It shows, that Halford not only can scream, but has tremendous range and control also for softer songs. It's an incredible cover version.

I have loved Judas Priest forever. They helped me survive high school. I was raised on old country music (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Red Sovine, Marty Robbins, etc) so I really like story songs. The best bands for that type of music are Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Both bands have quite a few songs that you can close your eyes and watch a movie in your head. For instance, listen to Lochness from Priest or Flight of Icarus by Maiden and see what I mean. I listed to both the music, beat and the lyrics. But when it comes to vocal, Rob Halford is the Metal God!

Thank you so much for doing Judas Priest, Rob Halford has a 4 octave range that will blow your mind and by the way he was 65 when he did this concert. I listen to metal for the lyrics, especially with Priest, they have such intricate lyrics and phrases, i also listen for the guitar solos and the overall sound. If you would like to see Judas doing a live version check out Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver live at the Ole grey Whistle it's from 75 or 76or check out Judas Live on the 83 concert doing any song

Back in the day when we would get vinyl record albums.( I still do, we have vinyl night once in a while) They would have the lyrics on the inner cover or sleeve somewhere and you would read them as you listened to the album play on the turntable. Not so much today. I still like to know the lyrics, but mostly listen to the music as a whole.

Yes, we listen to the lyrics. We had to figure them out on our own (or with friends partying) before the internet. There's a lot of good lyrics in metal along with some silly Dr. Suess stuff of course, but for the most part, plenty of really good stuff. I also think you can relate to them more knowing they wrote all their own lyrics.

He is still good in his age, but when he was younger, Rob Halford was truly asounding. His range was magnificent.
Listen to their live stuff from the 80's namely Victim of Changes, Dreamer Deciever, and Diamonds and Rust.
Green Manalishi is also pretty good.

His 80s range was astonishing. The guy could hit some really low notes too, just an astounding range. My fave metal singer is Bruce Dickenson, I think he's got a bit more stability, musicality and power, plus I think Maiden as a whole where a lot more consistent, Judas Priest tened to be hit and miss with song writing, but maiden had multiple albums without a single song that waasnt stellar. But holy shit is halford good at what he does and his range is unmatched, even by Dickenson, and when Priest did hit on a winner, by god it was magnificent to behold.

As far as lyrics, I feel that it's a hook, line, and sinker situation where everything else attracts you to the band first then the lyrics start to permeate - and you either GEEK out or become more a casual fan. Both are good.
I bought a book of Till Lindemann's poetry (Eng. Translation) after deep diving into his bands' lyrics, slightly obsessed now 🌟

Sometimes you listen for the lyrics sometimes you don’t. I think a lot of metal fans are used to the way things sound and they can understand the lyrics in spite of that, just like a lot of rap fans can understand the rap lyrics no matter how fast or high-pitched or out of breath the rapper ears, like sometimes I can’t understand Harry Mack when he’s really out of breath and wrapping it with very high and fast. But a lot of fans still can. It’s all about what you’re used to listening to I think.

Us metal fans do get into the lyrics... depending on the genre of metal. Judas Priest usually has lyrics about conquering, vengeance and retribution... Iron Maiden write about fantasy and some real life history... Metallica have very harsh lyrics about raw emotions and harsh reality... Megadeth writes about in depth issues as well as harsh realities... Anthrax's lyrics are dark and derived from fantasy and humor at times, which set them apart in heavy metal... Blind Guardian has these huge choruses that u can sing along to... 80's metal bands usually had these anthemic songs that u can sing along to.
There are genres of metal (black metal, death metal, grindcore) where the vocalist either delivers gutteral growls or screeches like a banshee... lyrics are not as vital in those cases. It's more of a feeling than knowing the words... albeit, the lyrics are about horror, death, satanism, gore, evil, etc... it's more of sounding harsh without having to comprehend the lyrics... bands like Cannibal Corpse, Despised Icon, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Morbid Angel, etc... Not many can get into those genres - they are more geared towards hardcore metalheads (like me 😁)

Also for metal, I'm mostly listening for the music, but the second wave of british metal was a high-point for metal vocals (Notably Judas Priest and Iron Maiden have fucken phenomenal vocalists), it was before all the lazy growling nonsense.

I’ve definitely seen better by them, where it’s a easier Melody to get into for the non-metal fans, and definitely he annunciates better cause he’s not singing so high and fast. But I’m happy it seems you still enjoyed it. I think that some of your fans need to be more careful what they choose for you to react to.

Listening to lyrics? It depends, "Painkiller" have really corny lyrics so better not. Metal is about power posing, to feel empowered by the music as long as it lasts, to get away from your weak and miserable self on a daily basis, to be a god or maybe a demon for three minutes at a time. A good refrain is enough at most times. There's no need for a story, it's about a feeling. But some bands like Iron Maiden excel at storytelling, it's different then, it's another league. "Painkiller is just about counting your balls. After listening to this, you should have at least three.
