  • The dust has settle from the massive 1934 Ford buyout and its finally time to take a look at Matt's keeper. This 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe was originally purchased in Southern California and Matt is now the 3rd owner. The gentleman Matt purchased the car from parked the car in the mid 60s and it sat basically untouched. Today Matt and Mike are going to clean out the interior and take a closer look at the overall condition of the car. Mike also gives "Beautiful" its first bath since the 60's and we get a better look at the condition of the paint. We are going to let the car sit for a few days and let it tell us what we should do.

    My grandfather bought my father a brand new 34 five-window coup for graduation from high school. My father kept that car running until 1977 and sold it when he became ill. My father taught me to drive in that ford, my sister and brother as well. He called her the crescent lady because the first time he dated my mom there was a crescent moon in the sky. I so miss that car.

    Matt, Your "rose" is likely a Veterans Day Poppy distributed on Veterans Day since 1921. It symbolizes the color of blood lost by American Veterans in battle around the world. It is a nice find and save for you.

      They still sell the poppies in Canada leading up to “Remembrance Day”. All the money goes to the Canadian Legions across Canada. It includes the Veterans from all conflicts where soldiers were lost. It is an honour to lead the procession to the local Legion Hall. 🇨🇦

    I wouldn't use the stripper. Maybe thinners would be better, but I think gentle wet sanding. It may take longer but will be safer. You cannot be too aggressive.

    • @87mini
      @87mini 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking a gentle wet sand with 600, until the grey is just barely hinting, then use some thinner - the sanded paint has more surface area and should come off quick. I'd also spend a little time on a hidden area experimenting with thinners to find some that dont affect the factory paint, and see if those are effective on the brush job.

    I don't know if this could help with the paint removal.
    I had success removing enamel paint using the product Purple power. I believe it has a trace on lye in it.
    You can try dollar store oven cleaner also.
    Just my 2 cents.

    My cousin Rocky restored a '34 Ford back to original in the late 60's. He said he was going to give it to his 5 year old son when he turned 16. I'll never forget what the boy said to his dad on his 16th birthday. "Are you kidding? I don't want to be seen driving THAT!" He wanted a Mustang. It was still in Rocky's garage when he died in 2010. Now the son has it and drives it.

    Oven cleaner works well to strip household paint off car bodywork. We used to use it to take signwriting off.

  • @rdecoster1
    @rdecoster1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a well preserved old car!! I never seen citra strip work before. Looks like a neat product. Working with old paint like this is tricky. I have used cheap lacquer thinner (as it is not as HOT) before and had good luck. The trick is the timing. How long do you leave it on is the key. A small jar or rattle can cap filled with thinner and a tooth brush is what I used. As soon as the top paint is off QUICK RINSE with water or some other mild??? to get the lacquer thinner to stop eating. Experiment in spots down below that you can't see well. A tooth brush works good as it removes the paint as you go. Normally factory paint is baked making it stronger. What I stripped was an old Honda CR125 tank someone had brushed with rustolium. It turned out really nice. Good Luck and do not be in a hurry!! This is a COOL car!!!

Personally the only visual changes I'd make would be to go back to the original headlight lenses and straighten out the front fender. When I was a teen car nut in the '60's these old heaps were still around, and often could be picked up for cheap. Also, lots of them were just rotting away, but could not be bought as the owners "had promised them to some spoiled grand kid" that didn't really want it anyway. One that comes to mind for me is a '34 Plymouth 5 window that sat a few blocks over from my house for years. The old guy lived in a ratty old trailer, and finally he said he'd take $75 bucks for it. My buddy and I tugged it out to the street, pulled for a block or two til fired up, then test drove for a ways. It smoked like chimney and ran badly, and had no brakes. We offered $35 in view of all the work it needed, he turned it down. It sat in that yard many more years then finally disappeared.
