    He hasn't lost edge, he understands performance. Gaga is not exactly my cup of tea but she does what she does in her own way, she's original and knows how to entertain.

    Lydon is naturally intelligent. He's very dry humoured. He's a national treasure now. He was lead singer a lyricist in 1 of the greatest band's ever, The Sex Pistols. They only made 1 album, but it's a genuine classic. Never Mind The Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols is in the all time top 20 albums ever. That's in company with the likes of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Simon and Garfunkel, Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. I've read Lydon's book, No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs. It's so honest and hilarious in parts, but he had a really tough and poor upbringing. I thought we were poor, which we were, but Lydon's family were REALLY Poor. As someone once said He couldn't tell a lie to save his life. He's so honest. About himself. He tells you what he thinks if you ask him he answers truthfully, even if it's about himself and it's embarrassing. So intelligent, interesting and honest. He will be sorely missed when he does finally pass on. Thank You John, for changing England in the late '70s. A unique soul.

    The thing is, she never compromises, has cultivated her own look, is a formidable songwriter and can choose to use electronics or just sing along to a piano live. He also likes dance music. The Pistols made a big splash by being outspoken, over the top, but had the songs to back it up. Gaga's in control of her own image & songs, and he respects that.

    I always feel, if you could cut through all the obvious artifice, that John Lydon would be a really decent bloke. There are very few people that have had as such a polarising affect on my life as this man. Culturally and artistically between 1976 and 1982 there were few people, if any, as powerfull and vital. Something happened to him when he left for the USA in 1983: seemingly I imagine he became much happier in himself but the art dissapeared.

    • @Corsetdollx
      @Corsetdollx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is abit unfair as Lady Gaga wasn't even born when Madonnas first album came out. Lady Gaga's first 3 albums are only a 11-15 years old, Madonna's are 32 -37 years old. That's a big gap, which is why you can't say that it's just not fair as Lady Gagas albums are more fresh, they aren't even vintage yet.

    I don't get the acclaim for Lady Gaga. She's not proven herself as some kind of genius to me only as weird and pretentious. Her music is actually quite generic and all this artsy fartsy weird stuff she does has been done before and in much better ways. Forced weirdness does not equal talent or genius but it seems that it can fool a hell of a lot of people. The worst of all is that I think she really does think her music is something revolutionary and mindblowing when it's simply the most kooky out of the "current" generic pop music. I'll give it to her she can sing very well but there's nothing else special about her. I'm also not a fan of Madonna but at least she's pretentious in a less ridiculous way. Bjork does it better than both of them combined.

    • @cassiuschaerea8630
      @cassiuschaerea8630 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      ***** Lady Gaga is a narcissist willing to do and say anything that gets her noticed. She has contradicted herself numerous times, when every time she says the thing the people around her wants to hear. She has said "Now, I don’t know if you know this, but for those of you who don’t know, I write all my own music. Every single lyric, melody and note was created by me. I am not manufactured." ... I wonder what RedOne, Darkchild, Fernando Garibay, Rob Fusari, Akon, Martin Kierszenbaum, and about fifty other engineers, backing vocalists, producers, writers, musicians, marketing assistants and A&R reps would have to say about that? Not manufactured... haha.. sure.
      Yet she doesn't even want to recognize her birthname. She IS a product.. and she's the biggest fan of herself. Lady Gaga has cast herself as the champion of misfits, eccentrics, and weirdos, telling them to embrace their identity, no matter what the costs; no matter what others might say to them. But she is particularly ill-equipped for such a role, given that she herself compromised her identity to win stardom.. She changed the style of music she made, the style of person she was and even had plastic surgery.
      We already saw David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust in the 70's. At best she revived the glam rock personality for a generation that never knew about it.

      David Bowie wasn't _his_ birth name either. What's your point about that? BTW, hyperbole is a thing, you know. I don't know much about her as she's not my cup of tea, but I'd guess that she's referring to her own stuff, specifically. Those mostly sound like collabs to me.

      And Kate Bush does it better than all of them combined. Bjork is a Kate Bush worshiper and she probably has a shrine of Kate.

      That’s just my opinion !
      I hate when you don’t know if Rotten is being sarcastic or not.
      Seems like he hates everyone sometimes.
      Green Day has been very faithful to the Clash and to Stiff Little Fingers, I
      think.
      But Offspring has opened for Californian… shit. Sorry !
      I’m a bit angry at the moment and just think they should not call it
      Californian Punk, but Californian… anything ! Californian Surf, Californian
      music.
      Offspring maybe made an excellent first album. But then they went down and were followed by all those Blink 182 and Sum41. And that is something, but certainly not Punk !

    • @widM_
      @widM_ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Habibasse It all started way back with Billy Idol and slowly escalated to MTV punk. I think Green Day had much bigger impact on pop punk scene and on later shitty bands like Blink and Sum. They were more recognizable, successful and more melodic.
      What are you talking about Californian? Green Day are also Californian.

    • @Habibasse
      @Habibasse 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sure !
      But they don’t have a typical Californian sound.
      Billy Idol & Tony James were together in Generation X, one of the best punk bands ever.
      They had nothing to prove. Even if all they did afterwards was poppy !

    I'm one of the last people on earth who would ever listen to a pop song of my own accord, but from what i've heard of todays pop music, it seems to me that Lady Gaga has the most talent. I feel like she is different from the other pop stars because she actually cares about the quality of her music, instead of just money or the charts.

    It's good to see that Lydon can be complimentary about someone. Never would have imagined that it might be lady Gaga though. Not that I have anything against her as a person or a musician (ok, she can be a bit too pretentious but then a lot of celebrities are).
    Rather surreal was when he praised Cliff Richard he appeared in "The 100 greatest Brits of the 20th Century ( I think that's what it was titled). I never would have thought it possible that he would! Wonders will indeed never cease!

      Oh come on I used to listen to his first interviews and all that stuff when he hated everything including pop music of course. Now he turned be opinionated but he was not a consistent musician. I mean, he slagged off Madonna and at the end of the day she is even punkier than he is. She ends up "liking" lady gaga who is a real copy cat. So, years made him soft.

      Dan Maginnis " you can like lady gaga" yeah i definitely sounded like you lol. But to call her music around the time of this interview anything structurally advanced is no opinionated. Her albums had basic pop formula that could be easily broken down. I don't enjoy her new material, but i acknowledge it as a step into something structurally different. I was saying he only said he enjoyed lady as a gimmick to act like anything that is publicly edgy is somehow meaningful or artful.

    • @SynphamyMusic
      @SynphamyMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just think you're over analyzing his statement and giving it more meaning than he probably intended. I don't like Lady Gaga much at all but i'd rather listen to her than the majority of shite that comes on a workplace radio. Why? I dunno, maybe it's the appreciation of the fact that she can actually write her own songs, she can play instruments, she can sing really well, the lyrical content is more thoughtful than the typical "ooer ooer" noises and Rihanna's half drunk gibberish lyrics. Whether her song structures are as complicated as anything by Rush doesn't really matter does it? You don't listen to music thinking "ohhh yes i love that A B A C A B format, very well designed"... no

    Thanks,they have gone through hard time,Warning in 2000 was critically reviewed as a great album,but sold poorly their last two albums before that had always sold less than the last,they came back and did a album,they had recorded it,the few people who sore it said it was back to Punk rock feel,they came in to finish things off and found the master tapes had been stolen,most bands would have fallen apart at that point,they didn't they ended up becoming inspired to write American idiot. Thanks.
