      Those SMD capacitors have a tendency to internally short. You can see the circuit it was attached to had a via so it looks like that capacitor was only for filtering since it was going to ground. This means it would probably have worked without it.

    "probably untested" on Ebay usually means the previous owner used a can opener to dissect the device, "cleaned" the PCB with steel wool on a belt-sander, spit their chewing gum inside, put it back together with one Ikea screw thats too big, plugged it into a car jumpstarter for 36 hours, used it for an ashtray, then put it up for sale.
    I'm surprised there was no hamster poop inside, along with saltwater snail eggs.

    I've been given a caravan tv/dvd that was new, worked for a few hours, then died completely. I'd normally open it up for a 'look' anyway but watching your videos has given me the confidence that I might actually be able to find out what's wrong with it!
    It could still end up a 'stupid telly' but we shall see.
    EDIT: I actually found a faulty component!! It took a while, and my USB microscope, but I found a blown-up 8-pin voltage regulator! It's about 3mm long so there's no way I could replace it even if I could find one to buy, but I found the bugger.

    My guess is that those caps are responsible for decoupling the supply to the battery charge circuit. So, 100nF is a fair value. I don't know whether it would've helped during this repair, but some datasheets have 'typical' component configurations included to give the designers an idea on what components to place to use their parts. I'm guessing this datasheet was one of those that didn't. Regardless, an excellent repair! :D

    Late to the party I know, and I'm sure you've since figured out why you need that capacitor. Even though the circuit will work without a capacitor, the cap is there to stabilise the voltage out of the regulator. The circuit will work fine but you risk spiking other components with higher voltage. Great video as always Steve!

  • @guldkrans
    @guldkrans ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Smaller value caps like 1uF or 0,1uF is usually fitted besides other chips/components to smoothen out the ripple on VCC rails across the board. Further away from the chip = greater values are needed. But they should be fitted as close as possible to the VCC pin of a component. More then often it probably works without it. The schematics in the datasheet for LTH7 doesn't show that a cap is needed on pin 3 for the battery. So again, it will probably work without it as well as any random ceramic cap.

    You really need to get a nice set of tweezer soldering tips for your soldering station. I have a Metcal station and use a MX-PTZ tweezers and its amazing. You just grab the part like with a pair of tweezers and the part is removed or installed. Its much faster than hot air gun and less likely to damage parts around it.

    Nice fix! Do you happen to know a good resource for hard to find data sheets for Chinese chips that don’t come up with a Google search? I have a digital microscope (KKMOON G1200) that has no backlight for the lcd. It had died while powering it from a USB battery bank, I found a SOT-23-5 chip that was getting hot and shorting to ground, could find nothing about it but traced it to the lcd and discovered it was likely a boost converter since the surrounding components matched the example circuit for a boost converter so replaced it with a same pinout different chip (TPS61040DBVR) and have a display now but no backlight, assuming the backlight circuit died when the boost ic shorted but can’t find a data sheet for a 6 pin chip labeled KDCAR that is likely a white led driver.

    my money is on the broken capacitor you lose is hiding inside the solder that was on the tip of that soldering iron
    anyway another amazing fix and minor spoiler its yet another case of... stop throwing away stuff that may just be a simple fix
